The <strong>Ashburton</strong> Toastmasters<br />
Club will celebrate its50th<br />
anniversaryinDecember.<br />
Overthe years the club has<br />
helped develop members<br />
speaking skills and helppeople<br />
get over the fearofpublic<br />
speaking.<br />
ClubpresidentAdi Avnit who<br />
immigrated to New Zealand five<br />
years ago fromIsrael, joined<br />
Toastmasters soonafter<br />
arriving in the country to help<br />
with hisEnglish.<br />
‘‘Iwas looking forways to<br />
practicemyenglish andjoined<br />
the cluband stayed because of<br />
the great people.’’<br />
The clubcurrently has <strong>18</strong><br />
membersfromall ages and<br />
backgrounds.<br />
‘‘We have peopleintheir20’s<br />
andpeople who areretired,<br />
lawyers to farmers all sortsof<br />
people,’’ Mr Avnit said.<br />
Some people join for<br />
professional reasons,somefor<br />
socialand otherstohelp combat<br />
their fear of public speaking.<br />
‘‘Fearofpublicspeaking is<br />
very common,alot of people<br />
struggle with that.<br />
‘‘Theidea of theToastmaster<br />
programme, that hasexistedfor<br />
around100 years, is it allows<br />
you to practice your public<br />
speakingskills, the idea is to<br />
give peoplefeedbackinavery<br />
positive way.’’<br />
Visitors are welcometocome<br />
along to meetings,iftheydecide<br />
to start the Toastmasters<br />
programme, the costis$100for<br />
six months.<br />
‘‘We welcomevisitors and<br />
encourage them to participate<br />
as well,weare always looking<br />
for newmembers.’’<br />
The subject of speeches can<br />
vary according to the<br />
programme butspeaking about<br />
yourself andyourown<br />
experiencesisagood placeto<br />
start.<br />
‘‘It’susuallyeasiest to speak<br />
about what youknowthe best,<br />
and what you know the best is<br />
yourself, so we learnalotof<br />
things about peopleand become<br />
friends,’’ Mr Avnit said.<br />
The club is lookingfor past<br />
memberstohelp celebrate the<br />
anniversaryonDecember1,<br />

demand for Covid19 testing<br />
overthe past few weeks.<br />

Health Board (CDHB) is urging<br />
peoplewith covidsymptomsto<br />
remain vigilant andget tested,<br />
no matter how mildthe<br />
symptoms.<br />

Dr HelenSkinner said withthe<br />
ongoing riskCovid19 presented<br />
to theregion, it was important<br />
Cantabrians whohad any Covid<br />
19 symptoms,nomatter how<br />
mild, continuetoseek atest.<br />
‘‘Wehave goodcapacityatour<br />
testing centres and testing is<br />
also available acrossgeneral<br />
practiceteams,’’ she said.<br />
Covid symptoms, similar to<br />
cold or influenza, can include<br />
new or worseningcough,<br />
sneezing and runny nose, fever,<br />
temporary loss of smell or<br />
altered sense of taste or sore<br />
throat andshortnessofbreath.<br />
Lesscommon symptomsof<br />
covid may include diarrhoea,<br />
headache, muscle aches,<br />
nausea, vomiting, malaise,chest<br />
pain, abdominalpain, joint pain<br />
or confusion/irritability.<br />
These mostly occurredwith<br />
oneormore of the common<br />
symptoms.<br />
Dr Skinner said more than<br />
25,200swabs hadbeentakenat<br />
testing sitesorgeneral practice<br />
teams Canterburywide overthe<br />
past month.<br />
The numberstested, steady at<br />
around3000 earlyinOctober,<br />
increased by more than double<br />
at the announcement of covid in<br />
Christchurch.<br />
During the weekofOctober 11,<br />
2845covid tests taken, and the<br />
following week3022.<br />
In the week from October25<br />
testing increasedto10,290 tests<br />
taken, with 9102atthe beginning<br />
of <strong>November</strong>.<br />
