Local heritage art collection on show<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Society of Arts (ASA)<br />
hasdelved intoits impressive<br />
art collection and over the next<br />
few weeks will be displayinga<br />
number of works that don’t<br />
usually seethe light of day.<br />
The society’s heritage<br />
collectionnumbersaround 60<br />
andmost were purchased over a<br />
40year periodfrom the late<br />
1960s.<br />
ASA patron BarbaraJaine<br />
saidsome 15 workshad been<br />
chosen andwere being<br />
displayed on the walls at Short<br />
Street studio.<br />
The works were in avariety of<br />
mediums and wereoflocal,<br />
regional andnationalinterest.<br />
Mrs Jaine saiddisplayingthe<br />
pieces wouldperhaps<br />
encourage people to think more<br />
about howthe ASA could<br />
display the collection.<br />
‘‘We have an amazing<br />
collection from awide varietyof<br />
NewZealandartists and it is so<br />
nicetobeable to display them.’’<br />
Art hadbeenpurchased by<br />
the ASAannually at the Annual<br />
Exhibition for manyyears and<br />
hadbeenchosenbecause of<br />
aestheticappeal,possible<br />
investment value and an<br />
education tool.<br />
The 15 worksondisplay<br />
include paintingsinoil,acrylic,<br />
pencil and mixed media,<br />
printmaking andsculptures.<br />
They includeworks by twoof<br />
NewZealand’sforemost<br />
