Ashburton Lions
Club President Roger Patersonwelcomed
everyone and opened this month’s meeting
with a happy event; the induction of new
member David Ward, sponsored by Mark
Holmes and sworn in by Garth Bateup.
Stuart Dunlop spoke about his recent visit
to the new Ashburton disc golf course, which
is located on the Smallbone Drive Reserve
near EA Networks Centre. Stuart reported that
the game is easy to pick up using discs hired
for a nominal course from the Networks
Centre. The course was constructed with
funds from a variety of sponsors including
Ashburton Lions Club.
PresidentRoger reminds everyonethat he
has no intention of carrying on as President
next year and invites members who are
interested in takingonmore senior roles within
the Club to come along with him to the 202J
District Training Forum on Saturday 27th
November in Oamaru.
Rod Green provided an update on Grace
Leahy, the young woman that the Club
(funded) to attend this year’s Outward Bound
course. Grace was unable to attend this
evening but sent her gratitude and a short
message saying how much she had got out of
the course, which included sailing around the
Marlborough sounds, climbing and marathon
running. She spokeofhow the course boosted
her confidence and self-esteem, and how she
is now planning to train as asocial worker in
order to help foster children like herself.
The District Governor’s representative
Jules Ellis gave the club an update of what our
District Governor hopes to achieve, and also
information about our new International President
Douglas Alexander. He also gave abrief
talk about how the Club might direct its
development over the coming year, and of the
need to spread the workload out beyond
Board members. He spoke passionately about
how aLion joins the organisation twice; once
at their induction, and again when they find
their own ‘tug of the heart’ moment in giving
service that really means something tothem.
Balance sheets were accepted for Admin
and the Charitable Trust, and board decisions
for put forward the names of Garth Bateup for
1st Vice District Governor and Graham Edge
as returning Trustee for 202J for the Lloyd
Morgan Charitable Trust were endorsed.
Ray Swan spoke about his chequered
time in teaching inSingapore, the Philippines
and in particular Dubai with Jenny. From
stories of green slime running out of the air
conditioning to Ray being the proud owner of
an Alcoholic’s License, Ray and Jenny clearly
never had adull moment and came back to
see New Zealand with fresh eyes.
In announcements, we learned that the
Government is granting Ashburton Lions
$5,500 towards marketing of the South Island
Motorhome Show. Tail Twisters duties were
Lions District Governor
representative Jules Ellis
performed byChristine Milne and Lois Sparrow,
who showed their displeasure with
memberswho didn’twear ties to club or watch
enough sport on TV.
Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club
recent meeting ofthe Friendship Club. Birthdays
and anniversaries were celebrated after
the singing of the National Anthem. The
almoner, Therese, gave an update on the
health of members. There were many donations
of cleaning products to be taken up to
Ronald McDonald House.
Members were reminded of the coffee
morning, and the trip to Orari for the Christmas
meal after our December meeting. There will
also be atrip to Peel Forest to view the lilies
and the church.
The raffle was drawn and the mini
speakers were Betty and Gwen, orperhaps I
should call them Daisy and Daphne. They
entertained us with ahumorous sketch called
‘Everything in the Garden is Lovely’. With a
few minutes to spare before morning tea
Marion showed usatin of reduced cream and
asked us to guess where it came from. When
we heard the answer we wonderedwhy cream
would come from Mexico.
Our main speaker was Judy from Anglican
Advocacy who told us all about her role.
Anglican Advocacy is aunit of Anglican Care,
one of the largest faith-based and nongovernment
providers of social services in
Canterbury. The advocacy has been in
Ashburton since 2019. Their purpose is to
navigate and services are free. To empower a
person and give them the tools. They help
people to do it for themselves, itmay involve
budgeting, or appointments at Housing NZ
and Ministry of Social Development and other
places. Julie thanked Judy for her presentation
and gave her afruit and vegetable tray.
The thought for the month was ‘‘The kiss
of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for
mirth, One is nearer God’s heart in agarden
than anywhere else on earth.’’
