Our New Service in Milnrow, Rochdale, is currently home to one gentleman

at present. We are looking to support by providing assistance with a complex

health condition, mental health needs and behavioural support. Albeit a small

service at Milnrow, we always have the same goal, which is to provide

the best person centred care possible, to make all of the people we

support feel safe, supported and happy.

The person we support in Milnrow loves nothing more than sport,

leisure activities, cooking his own meals, computer games and

visiting his family each week. We want our successful Personal

Assistant’/Support Worker’s to continue supporting and encouraging

our person we support, to build relationships, try new things, learn,

and get involved in as much as possible in new activities.

This active role will also require successful candidates to help and support

with household chores and oversee meal preparation. A good sense of humour

is essential for this role as the people we support will keep you on your toes

and always try to amuse you. The ideal candidate will be calm, organised,

resilient and positive.

Shifts will include; Early Mornings, Late Evenings, Sleep in Shifts and Waking Nights

shifts (Sleep in and Waking Night Enhancements). Please note – All successful

applicants must be fully flexible to do all required shifts on a rota system.

Currently with this service you will be required to temporarily work in Oldham

until the new service is fully functioning in the new year.

GINGERBREAD BISCUITS

The dough makes up to 60 small

biscuits at 1 syn each. If you make

them larger adjust the syns and

possibly the cooking time.

These biscuits also make excellent

edible tree decorations. Cut a tiny

hole towards one edge of each

biscuit before baking, then pass a

ribbon through and tie to the tree.

Ingredients

50g unsalted butter

2 level tbsp golden syrup

2 level tbsp light soft brown sugar

225g self-raising flour

1 tbsp ground ginger

1 tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground cloves

2 level tsp sweetener granules

3 level tbsp skimmed milk

1 level tsp icing sugar, for dusting

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan170°C/gas 5 and line 2 large

baking trays with non-stick baking paper.

2. Melt the butter and golden syrup in a small pan over a low

heat. Remove from the heat, stir in the sugar and set aside.

3. Sift the flour, spices and ¼ tsp salt into a bowl and stir in the

sweetener. Stir the melted butter into the flour along with the

milk and mix into a dough. Knead briefly until smooth then cut

the dough in half.

4. Roll out 1 piece of dough between 2 large sheets of cling film

to a thickness of about 3-4mm. Cut out as many small biscuits

as you can using a cutter that’s about 5cm x 5cm or 6cm x

4cm (go for any shapes you like, such as stars, Christmas trees,

gingerbread men or women). Lightly re-knead and roll out

the trimmings again and again until all the dough is used up.

Repeat with the second piece of dough. You should end up

with about 60 small biscuits.

5. Lay the biscuits side-by-side on the baking trays and bake

each tray on the middle shelf of the oven for about 7½ minutes

or until they’re starting to brown but still slightly soft to the

touch (for a darker biscuit with more snap, cook

for 8-8½ minutes).

6. Leave to go cold, dust evenly with

icing sugar and store in an airtight tin.

Much to the relief of our four-legged

friends, the bonfire and fireworks

period has now fizzled out and with

the Halloween celebrations well and

truly spooked, we are all looking

forward to a wonderful Christmas

and New Year.

The light show and decorations in the

new Riverside shopping plaza will all be

up and running by the time you read

this and of course, the new Christmas

lights in Shawclough Village will be, as

promised, enhancing the Christmas

holiday mood.

Just moving further up the road to the Healey Triangle residents can

enjoy the new Christmas tree and with the pub opened this year,

everyone can get in and enjoy the Christmas spirit that was so sadly

lacking last year.

Moving over to the Syke Chapel and Community Base, the big switch

on by the Mayor will have taken place but if you missed it, the popular

Carols and nativity event is back this year, check out our community

notice boards for further details.

More action about the safety camera next time, so if we don’t see you

before, have a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year from all your

local Councillors.

Syke Walk & Talk Group

SYKE CHAPEL TO BIRCH HILL

An easy walk of about 4 miles. Mainly

level walking but with a short but

steep climb up Birch Hill.

Setting off from Syke Chapel head north along

Dewhirst road. After a short distance there

is a metal gate on your right. Go through the

gate and follow this path through a copse and

another metal gate until you come to a style

and a stream which you cross by the stepping

stones or a narrow plank.

Turn left and cross the road and after a short

distance take the footpath on your right which

leads onto Elm Grove. Continue along Elm

Grove until you reach number 13. A footpath

takes you between the houses onto Birch

Road. Turn right and after a short distance left

into Westmorland Drive. Take the right fork

onto Birch Hill Lane and continue along the

lane until you see a footpath sign on your right.

Cross the stile and take the path immediately

to your left. The path rises steeply to the crest

of Birch Hill. The climb is worth the effort. On

a clear day there are excellent views in every

direction. To the west is Wardle and beyond

that Brown Wardle and Middle Hill. To the

north is Crook Moor and the wind farm.

Continue on this path which passes through

the fields and over several styles finally taking

you up a steep bank, over another style and on

to Rydings Road. Cross the road bearing left

and descend the steps to Rydings Dam. Take

the path to the right which takes you across

the dam embankment Follow the steps up the

side of the valley. The path can be difficult to

see but head towards Wardle.

As you approach the houses on Wardle road

look out for a turn in the path to the right

which leads you between the houses and onto

Wardle road.

Looking east is Shore, Littleborough and

Hollingworth Lake with the Pennines beyond.

The Rakewood viaduct, Blackstone Edge and

the White House can be seen in clear weather.

By contrast the view to the South is a largely

urban landscape taking in Rochdale and

Manchester.

From the crest of the hill continue to follow the

path south and then bear right across the field.

From here retrace the route of the outward

walk. There is about ¾ of a mile level walking

but with several stiles and the stream to cross

to reach the starting point at Syke Chapel.

This stretch of the route can be difficult to

follow but continue until you reach a path and

trackway which takes you north and back to

the stile which you crossed when ascending

the hill. Turn left along Birch Hill lane retracing

the walk as far as Wardle road. Cross the road

and proceed down Lawflat which is in front

of you. At the bottom of the lane cross the

footbridge and follow the footpath to the left.

This path can be very muddy in places but

takes you along the north side of Rydings Dam

and up the flight of steps onto Rydings Road.

Turn left and walk downhill for a few yards until

you see a stile on your right. Cross the stile

and descend the steep bank.

Syke Walk and Talk Group was

formed almost 15 years ago.

We offer at least 2 walks each Friday all

year round and attempt to provide suitable

walks for all abilities. The walks are entirely

free. Toilet facilities are normally available at

Syke Chapel who are also able to offer tea/

coffee and biscuits at modest prices after

the walk.

The walks are are free to attend and lead by

trained walk leaders with a good knowledge

of the Syke area.

Walks leave on Friday’s at 10am. Please

arrive around 9.45 for registration. The

meeting point is outside Syke Chapel, Syke

Road OL12 9TF

Our walks utilise public footpaths and roads

around Syke and we walk in all weathers.

It is important to come properly equipped

with boots and suitable clothing.

Covid-19

Whilst restrictions have now been relaxed the

virus still represents a risk. It is advisable to

maintain a safe distance from other walkers.

FESTIVE RECIPES

Spiced Party Nuts

Cheese Nibbles

INGREDIENTS

40g butter

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Sprinkle garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp cayenne pepper

350g mixed nuts

1 tsp coarse salt

METHOD

1. Heat oil and butter in a frying pan over a

medium heat.

2. Add all spices and mixed nuts.

3. Continue to cook stirring occasionally until

golden brown or transfer to a baking tray

and roast at 190C/ 170 fan or gas 5 for 15

to 20 minutes.

4. Cool and store for up to 1 month in an

airtight container.

INGREDIENTS

150g plain flour + pinch salt

100g butter

50g mature cheddar cheese grated

15g finely grated parmesan

1 egg yolk

1 tbsp water

Milk to glaze and 50g chopped walnuts

METHOD

1. Rub fat into flour to resemble breadcrumbs,

mix in cheeses and stir in egg yolk

and water to bind together.

2. Shape into a roll 2.5cm in diameter and

wrap in foil. Chill until firm.

3. Cut into 6mm slices and place on a baking

sheet. Brush with milk and sprinkle with

walnuts.

4. Bake at 200C/180 fan / Gas 6 for 15-20

minutes until pale golden in colour.

5. Cool and freeze or store in an airtight tin

for 2-3 days.
