Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: The warm and cozy dining room at the Blue Pig Tavern 

inside Congress Hall. We haven’t eaten out in a while and Jack wanted 

to treat Kayla and Nicole to a Christmas lunch before we were off for 

the holiday weekend. 

The surprise: Despite the hustle and bustle of town, we were able 

to grab a parking spot and table with ease on this Thursday afternoon. 

It was VERY cold out — probably the lowest temp we’ve seen thus far 

— so it was nice to have a seat near the roaring fireplace to keep us 

warm. 

The conversation: With so much going on between the ferry terminal, 

Exit Zero Filling Station and the whole new baby thing in the 

Wright household, this was one of the few days we saw Jack for more 

than 20 minutes here and there through the day. It was nice to chat 

about the work being done at our other location and hear about some 

exciting updates. We also chatted about our holiday plans and how 

crazy they can be when you have multiple families to visit, whether or 

not they are our own. Laughs were shared at the expense of each other 

— details cannot be published, but would we expect anything less? 

The drinks: Since it was a holiday, Jack said he was going to enjoy 

a glass of merlot and encouraged Kayla and Nicole to do the same. 

After a little arm twisting, they decided to enjoy a couple of bloody 

marys. It was just what we all needed after a hectic couple of days. 

The food: We all decided what we wanted to eat pretty quickly. 

Jack went for the steak frite with a side salad, Kayla enjoyed the 

chicken BLT with a side salad and Nicole the turkey avocado and 

bacon sandwich, BUT she went with French fries. Jack at least waited 

until she was boxing up her leftovers to begin picking at her fries. 

The takeaway: The Blue Pig never disappoints. With the restaurant 

being open year-round, it’s convenient and delicious.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

In the immortal words of Barry Manilow, 

looks like we made it. It’s my last one of 

these for the year and I’ve got 10 months 

worth of leftover notes, so you can 

expect a really low-effort offering this 

week. (I know, I know, they all seem really 

low-effort but you ain’t seen nothin’ yet…) 

I would do a whole Year In Review thing 

but, really, who wants to linger on 2021 one 

second longer than they have to? Let’s just 

start with a clean slate in 2022, when things 

are bound to get better, right? (He says as 

2020 laughs maniacally in the distance…) 

We managed to have a serviceable 

Christmas this year despite half the O’Brien 

adults not working much in the last quarter. 

I’m usually your average, depressed, Irish, 

tamp-your-feelings-way-down-deep-inside-then-drown-them-in-alcohol 

type, but 

took a mental health break in October that 

laundered my karma (good), while eviscerating 

my bank account (bad). Thankfully, 

our sons are grown enough to want mostly 

clothes and gift cards because PS5s and 

iPhones weren’t happening. We also enjoyed 

a wonderful breakfast (cooked by me) and 

a wonderful dinner (cooked by me) while 

watching the sneakily excellent Enctanto 

on Disney+ as Owen and Jackson argued, 

Henry played on his phone and Cathrine 

kept asking me “what just happened?” In 

other words, an awesome day. 

Speaking of breakfast, I’m sure there’s 

some deep-seated psychological reason why 

I make my (delicious) breakfast potatoes by 

cooking big potatoes, then chopping those 

big potatoes into small potatoes, a task that 

takes the better part of an hour, when there 

are literally dozens of pre-seasoned breakfast 

potatoes hanging in Acme that you just 

brown and serve. Probably something to do 

with my Catholic upbringing, but as a good 

Irish boy, I’d rather tamp those feelings down 

until I die than talk about them. 

I spent my Christmas week reading Jack 

Reacher novels. Three of them. All great. 

Couldn’t tell you what one of them was 

about. 

Speaking of books I love but can’t 

remember, the Station Eleven adaptation on 

HBO is stunning (for five episodes, anyway). 

Turns out I completely memory-dumped the 

book, though, because every moment has 

been a wonderful surprise. (Warning: It’s 

bleak. New moms should NOT watch it. Jack 

Wright, this is me telling you to keep Diane 

Stopyra away from it in case you’re too thick 

to break my code.) 

It’s always jarring when Larry Crinkle 

pops up on my TV (which is, somehow, 

mysteriously, always tuned to Fox 29 every

as I stretched out on our new 

sectional, she says, “You don’t 

have to sleep out here tonight. 

Come to the bedroom with me if 

you want. I can’t promise it’ll be 

very pleasant, but…” 

And they say that romance 

is dead. 

I recently suffered a catastrophic 

eye injury while playing 

peekaboo. They put me in the 

ICU. 

Good News/Bad News of the

Spice Cellar of Cape May and 

the Weed Dispensary Co. of 

Cape May (okay, not yet). I’m 

not exactly sure what it is I’ll be 

doing, but whatever it is they’ll 

be paying me, so I’ll try to do it 

pretty well. Unfortunately, Tim 

Shriver works there, as well, 

meaning every day will start 

with a 15-minute ball-breaking 

session over coffee before any 

actual work gets done. 

Spider-Man: No Way Home 

isn’t the most fun I’ve had at 

a Marvel movie (that honor is 

shared by Guardians of the Galaxy 

and Avengers: Infinity Way) but it’s 

awful damn close. A nerdgasm 

of the highest order. It was a 

travesty that Spider-Man 2 was 

not nominated for Best Picture 

in 2004 (which The Incredibles 

should have won) and it will be 

a travesty now, especially with 

the expanded format, which 

was implemented precisely for 

movies like this. You know, ones 

that people have actually seen, 

as opposed to whatever gay 

fish-screwing Korean teacher 

drama is currently knocking 

them dead in Manhattan. 

Lastly this year, along with 

my new job for the Peanut Butter 

Mafia (which makes sense, 

because I’m chunky, yet smooth), 

I’ll be returning to the mic at 

Exit Zero this Saturday (with a 

bonus gig on Sunday) before settling 

into Fridays and Saturdays 

for the long haul. We’re calling 

these gigs Terry O’Brien & Co. 

as I’ll be playing with an array of 

wingmen this year. I’m excited to 

work with these guys and I think 

you’ll enjoy them, too. 

Additionally, and as I’ve 

been teasing for the last, oh, 18 

months, I’m pleased to announce 

that my tribute bands, Love Me 

Dudes (Beatles) and The Terry 

O’Brien Band (Beatles/Billy/ 

Bruce), will be playing every 

third Sunday at Exit Zero Ferry 

Station (EZ’s new Cape May- 

Lewes Ferry venture) starting…

A 

picture may be worth a thousand 

words, but when it comes to good 

filmmaking the words still count! 

One Oscar category I’ve been 

drawn to recently is Outstanding 

Achievement in Visual Effects. This used to 

be called special effects. Either way, it seems 

to be reserved for blockbuster films — despite 

the fact that many smaller films take the time 

to artfully consider the visually pleasing. 

This year, Variety magazine has five predictions 

for its top visual arts movies. Three 

of them are superhero movies, not surprisingly, 

with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Eternals, 

and Shang-Chi. A reimagining of Dune and 

continuing saga of The Matrix round out the 

category predictions. 

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is 

visually stunning! This martial arts superhero 

movie also gets credit for being well-written 

— although sometimes formulaic storytelling 

needs to be overwhelmed by the aesthetic.

you barely have time to catch your breath to

see the subtle overuse of some story elements. 

What’s becoming clear is that Marvel has 

mastered the art of keeping the plot simple. 

It adds a great deal of humor, especially with 

comedic favorite Awkwafina as the would-be 

leading lady. In years past, some superhero 

movies featured too many characters and subplots 

that made me feel less entertained and 

more like I needed a scorecard in the theater. 

Not the case with Shang-Chi. 

Simu Liu plays the lead character, a son 

who is uncertain about the powers his father 

wants to bestow. The father is played by Xu 

Wenwu. Ben Kingsley’s character also brings 

a lot of comic relief. Even though this could be 

a complicated story, Marvel keeps the mood 

light and the action lively. As I think about it, 

“lively” is a huge understatement. 

Some debate that visual effects are just 

another way of saying cinematography. Not 

sure I disagree with this. But you are not going 

to get a listing of superhero movies under 

cinematography — just not going to happen. 

What you get there is a list of the nominees 

for best picture. That’s just the way it works. 

And it’s unlikely that superhero movies will be 

nominated for screenplay adaptation. Variety 

gives Shang-Chi a nod all the way down on its 

list of movies for this nomination. 

So get in front of a big screen and see 

some of these cool flix over the holidays.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Every season has its special charms, 

winter notwithstanding. When wife 

Linda and I first became involved, 

we asked each other the important 

questions that couples ask. “Favorite 

book?” “Favorite movie?” 

And while I no longer know the answers 

to those questions, I do recall Linda’s surprise 

to my response to her question, “What is your 

favorite season?” 

“Winter,” I replied. 

“Not summer?” she probed. 

“No...” I replied, simply but sincerely, “...I 

hate summer.” 

Summer means sweating under the sheets 

at night and breathing the same air they were 

breathing in Birmingham, yesterday. Give me 

the clean, crisp ice-tinged air seeping out of 

Canada, anytime. It makes every breath intoxicating 

and the low-lying winter light gilds the 

landscape. Summer air blurs the edges and 

coats the world in bland uniformity. 

I guess winter light helps explain why I 

find winter waterfowl so appealing. That and 

their abundance. In summer, ducks and geese 

are paired and spread out across the Prairies 

and the Arctic. Only in winter do the birds 

coalesce into flocks where their cavorting and 

gabble is a seasonal delight. 

In February, if you head for coastal inlets 

that are stirred by the tide, you can hear the 

courtship calls of male Long-taileds. It sounds 

like the birds are saying South Southerly... 

South Southerly....” In fact, “South Southerly,” 

was the name market gunners ascribed to 

the flagellum-tailed birds. In the Arctic the 

Inuit know the bird as the “Ah-guy-achook,” 

Another phonetic rendering of the duck’s call. 

One vocalizing bird will set off a chain reaction 

of calls followed by a spirited tail chase 

in which females invite suitors to show their 

best stuff. 

One Spring, Linda and I were camped 

at the edge of the seasonal ice sheet near 

Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Spring was running late, 

and thousands of Long-tailed Ducks were 

jammed up against the ice, waiting for tundra 

ponds to thaw. Sleep was about impossible 

given the din of yodeling Long-taileds and the 

near 24-hour sunlight. The threat of prowling 

Polar Bears only added to our inability to 

sleep. 

But Cape May residents can avoid bears 

and save the expense of a flight to Pond Inlet 

and still be treated to the sight and sound 

of Long-taileds in love. Just head over to 

Townsend, Cape May or Hereford Inlet and 

get an ear full.

A 

clean house is a great way to start 

the new year, so it’s no wonder so 

many cultures incorporate cleaning 

into their New Year’s celebrations. 

In Portugal, it’s considered good luck 

to start the new year with an empty clothes 

hamper, which means New Year’s Eve is laundry 

day. In China, sweeping on the first day of 

the new year is bad luck, so the house must be 

clean before the calendar turns. After you rest 

in a clean house for a few hours, you can think 

about your resolutions for 2022. 

You may resolve to help clean up your 

town. Maybe you’re ready to “trashercise.” 

Trashercise, or “plogging” is a combination 

of exercising while picking up trash. Though 

we all know kind souls who have been doing 

this for years, it became trendy in Sweden in 

2016, when concern about plastic pollution 

encouraged Swedes to take action. “Plogging” 

combines the Swedish words “plocka upp,” 

for “picking up” with “jogga” for “jogging.” 

Generally, you turn one of your regular outdoor 

exercise sessions into a cleanup. One

plogger advises a light jogging warm up to 

scout for garbage, followed by a walk with 

frequent squats to pick up the litter. She wears 

gloves and carries a couple of trash bags, 

which she deposits into municipal trash cans. 

Though it may feel like you’re trying to 

empty the ocean with a teaspoon, experts say 

these clean ups can make a difference. Picking 

up trash encourages you and others to be more 

aware of what we create. And people who 

participate in a group effort become ambassadors, 

encouraging others to reduce single-use 

plastics and be careful of where to dispose of 

things like cigarette butts which may take a 

decade to degrade. This chain reaction may 

keep streets and beaches cleaner — healthier 

for wildlife.

Wear closed shoes and 

dress for the weather, including sunscreen. 

If you’re going to do your own beach cleanup, 

wear sturdy gloves and use a grabber to pick 

up sharp objects like broken glass. Use your 

kitchen tongs as a grabber and sterilize them 

in your dishwasher later. If you plan to make 

plogging a habit, consider making or buying a 

special tool, like a long stick with a sharp pin 

on the end. Don’t touch your face with your 

gloves on. Wash your hands thoroughly when 

done and pat yourself on the back.

COVID scare I don’t know what would be open 

after New Year’s because that’s when I told him

I started dating a man two years ago. 

He soon started talking about marriage but 

said we had to wait until he finished law 

school, which he finished earlier this month. 

Christmas has passed with no engagement 

ring. I’m 33 and want to have children. I trusted 

him and now feel I was lied to. I saw a letter on 

his desk for a job offer in Chicago. He knows I 

can’t relocate because of my job, my parents 

and my love of Cape May. I am so hurt. I’m 

waiting for him to bring this all up but so far — 

crickets. What should I do? — Devastated

He may be weighing his decision and is 

having a hard time himself. Your silence is fearbased. 

Fear that it might be over or that your 

chance has passed. He might have changed his 

mind but isn’t it time you brought all this out 

into the open? Whatever his personal goals 

are, you clearly have some of your own and 

this needs to be openly discussed. Don’t allow 

yourself to put your fate in someone else’s

STORM is a sweet and gentle big girl who 

came to the shelter when her family moved 

and couldn't take her along. She is 95 pounds 

of happiness. Storm gets a lot of exercise in 

the yard, and she has excellent leash skills. She 

is friendly to any human that comes near her, 

and does well with other dogs, cats and children. 

She will make a wonderful family pet. 

SNOWBALL is a seven-year-old girl who 

loves attention. So much so that she needs a 

home where she will be the only pet. Snowball 

loves running around the yard and playing 

fetch, but her favorite thing to do is go on 

a brisk walk. She has excellent leash skills and 

will stay close to her human. Snowball would 

do best in a quiet, adult home. 

ROCKY is a mature boy who came to the 

shelter when his family could no longer care 

for him. He is a sweet and mellow dog who is 

easy to harness and loves long walks. Rocky's 

leash skills are excellent, and he mostly enjoys 

attention from his humans. According to his 

last owner, he gets along with children, cats 

and love frequent trips to the dog park.
