GVPT 240 Political Ideologies (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) A survey and<br />

an analysis of the leading ideologies of the modern world. Topics<br />

include anarchism, communism, socialism, fascism, nationalism,<br />

and democracy.<br />

GVPT 401 Problems of World Politics (3)<br />

(Fulfills the civic or international perspective requirement.) A<br />

study of governmental problems of international scope. Topics<br />

include causes of war, problems of neutrality, and propaganda.<br />

Assignments include reports on readings from current literature.<br />

GVPT 403 Law, Morality, and War (3)<br />

(Fulfills the civic responsibility requirement.) An exploration of<br />

fundamental moral and legal issues concerning war.<br />

GVPT 405 Defense Policy and Arms Control (3)<br />

A survey of contemporary issues of military strategy and<br />

international security. The processes of formulating defense-related<br />

political and economic policy are examined. Topics include nuclear<br />

war and conventional (limited) warfare, insurgency by guerrillas,<br />

arms control and disarmament, and the possibilities for moderation<br />

of war.<br />

GVPT 443 Contemporary Political Theory (3)<br />

Prerequisite: GVPT 100. A survey of the principal political<br />

theories and ideologies from Karl Marx to the present.<br />

GVPT 444 American Political Theory (3)<br />

(Fulfills the historical perspective requirement.) A study of the<br />

development and growth of American political concepts from<br />

the colonial period to the present.<br />

GVPT 451 Foreign Policy of Russia and the States of the<br />

Former Soviet Union (3)<br />

(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)<br />

A study of the development of the foreign policy of Russia and<br />

the other states of the former Soviet Union. The processes of<br />

policy formation and the forces and conditions that make for<br />

continuities and changes are examined. Students may receive<br />

credit only once under this course number.<br />

GVPT 455 Contemporary Middle Eastern Politics (3)<br />

(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)<br />

A survey of contemporary developments in the international<br />

politics of the Middle East. Emphasis is on the role emerging<br />

Middle Eastern nations have been taking in world affairs.<br />

GVPT 457 American Foreign Relations (3)<br />

(Fulfills the historical perspective requirement.) A study of the<br />

principles and machinery of American foreign relations. Emphasis<br />

is on the conduct of the U.S. Department of State and the Foreign<br />

Service. Analysis of the major foreign policies of the United States<br />

is provided.<br />

GVPT 475 The Presidency and the Executive Branch (3)<br />

An examination of the various roles of the president in the political<br />

process of the United States. The president’s involvement in<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> Course Descriptions — GVPT 240 through HIST 255<br />

legislative matters, the president’s function in the executive branch,<br />

and the president’s role in his or her political party are assessed.<br />

GVPT 488 Comparative Studies in <strong>Europe</strong>an Politics (3)<br />

(Formerly GVPT 486. Fulfills the international perspective<br />

requirement.) Prerequisite: GVPT 280 or GVPT 282. A<br />

comparative study of political processes and governmental forms<br />

in selected <strong>Europe</strong>an countries. Students may receive credit for<br />

only one of the following courses: GVPT 486 or GVPT 488.<br />

History<br />

Courses in history (designated HIST) may be applied as<br />

appropriate (according to individual program requirements)<br />

toward:<br />

the general education requirements in the arts and humanities<br />

and historical perspective coursework;<br />

a major or minor in history;<br />

a major or minor in Asian Studies;<br />

a minor in African American studies, or women’s studies; and<br />

electives.<br />

HIST 108 Biography in History (3)<br />

An introduction to the study of history through a detailed<br />

investigation of the life, times, and works of an important historical<br />

figures. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 semester hours<br />

when the historical figures differ.<br />

HIST 141 Western Civilization I (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) A survey of<br />

the history of Western civilization from antiquity through the<br />

Reformation. The political, social, and intellectual developments<br />

that formed the values and institutions of the Western world are<br />

examined.<br />

HIST 142 Western Civilization II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) A survey of<br />

the history of Western civilization from the Reformation to modern<br />

times.<br />

HIST 156 History of the United States to 1865 (3)<br />

A survey of the United States from colonial times to the end of<br />

the Civil War. The establishment and development of national<br />

institutions are traced. Students may receive credit for only one of<br />

the following courses: HIST 156 or HUMN 119.<br />

HIST 157 History of the United States Since 1865 (3)<br />

A survey of economic, intellectual, political, and social<br />

developments since the Civil War. The rise of industry and the<br />

emergence of the United States as a world power are emphasized.<br />

Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses:<br />

HIST 157 or HUMN 120.<br />

HIST 255 African American History (3)<br />

A survey of the African American in American history. Topics<br />

include the African background, slavery, and the role of blacks in<br />

the social, political, economic, cultural and artistic life of the United<br />
