Web-Based Computer-Conferencing<br />

Courses<br />

In an Web-based computer-conferencing course, students interact<br />

asynchronously with a cohort group of classmates and the course<br />

instructor. Using an Internet browser, students access a secure<br />

classroom site where they can discuss issues, work together in<br />

study groups, and collaborate on writing assignments. Students are<br />

expected to participate frequently and to read and respond three<br />

or more times per week to topics posted in the class conferences.<br />

These courses are not independent study.<br />

To participate in one of <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong>’s computer-conferencing<br />

courses, students must have their own computer hardware and<br />

communication software, a graphical browser, and access to the<br />

Internet. Computer-conferencing courses from a variety of<br />

academic disciplines begin five times a year, coinciding with the<br />

regular term schedules and extending over two terms<br />

(approximately 15 weeks).<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> General Course Information<br />

Individualized Learning Courses<br />

Individualized Learning (IL) courses meet the needs of students<br />

whose circumstances prevent them from enrolling in classroom<br />

or web-based courses. Examples of such circumstances include<br />

living in a location that has few classroom courses and unreliable<br />

Internet connectivity as well as extremely difficult duty schedules.<br />

IL courses are rigorous and require students to work with<br />

considerable independence. Students are cautioned to enroll in<br />

IL courses only when other formats are not available to them.<br />

Students seeking to apply more than 3 s.h. of IL course credits<br />

towards a <strong>UMUC</strong> certificate, more than 6 s.h. towards a <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

AA degree, or more than 12 s.h. towards a <strong>UMUC</strong> bachelor’s<br />

degree must have permission from a <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> Academic<br />

Advisor.<br />

A student may begin an IL course at any time and will have 15<br />

weeks to complete the course at his or her own pace. Lessons,<br />

course materials, and supplemental readings are stored on a CD-<br />

ROM to enable the student to take the course wherever he or she<br />

goes. A comprehensive syllabus, also on the CD-ROM, guides<br />

the student through the course requirements. Access to the<br />

Internet is not necessary. For each IL course, a faculty member,<br />

who serves as the course manager, is responsible for all grading.<br />

The faculty member is available to the student via telephone,<br />

postal mail, fax, and/or e-mail for assistance with the course.<br />
