New grammatical elements, sentence structures, and vocabulary<br />

are introduced. Active language practice on common<br />

conversational topics is combined with a systematic study of<br />

grammar. The goal is to achieve fluency in spoken idiomatic Italian.<br />

Cultural topics related to customs are read and discussed. Students<br />

may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ITAL<br />

114 or ITAL 211.<br />

ITAL 212 Intermediate Italian II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 211. Further development of language skills in Italian.<br />

New grammatical elements and sentence structures are introduced,<br />

with emphasis on idiomatic expressions. Practice in oral<br />

communication using culturally accurate expressions in Italian is<br />

emphasized. Students may receive credit for only one of the<br />

following courses: ITAL 115 or ITAL 212.<br />

ITAL 250 Intermediate Conversation (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 212. Further development of conversational skills in Italian.<br />

Focus is on comprehending and responding to questions seeking<br />

concrete information (such as personal background, interests,<br />

needs, family, and work), comprehending media announcements<br />

and reports, and describing visual situations. Emphasis is on<br />

vocabulary building and idiomatic expression. Short readings<br />

from a variety of increasingly sophisticated formal and informal<br />

sources are used. Students who have already successfully<br />

completed ITAL 201 may not earn credit for this course.<br />

ITAL 301 Review Grammar and Composition I (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 212 or equivalent. A systematic and thorough review of<br />

grammar with emphasis on the more idiomatic and difficult points<br />

of syntax.<br />

ITAL 302 Review Grammar and Composition II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 301 or equivalent. Further review of grammar with<br />

emphasis on the more idiomatic and difficult points of syntax.<br />

ITAL 311 Advanced Conversation I (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 212 or consent of the faculty member. Training in<br />

understanding Italian without being confused by syntactical<br />

structures. Emphasis is on conversing in a spontaneous and<br />

idiomatic manner.<br />

ITAL 312 Advanced Conversation II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

ITAL 212 or consent of the faculty member. Further training in<br />

ITAL 333 Italian Life and Culture I (3)<br />

Conducted in English. A study of Italian life and culture from<br />

Roman times to the Renaissance.<br />

ITAL 334 Italian Life and Culture II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)<br />

Conducted in English. A study of Italian life and culture from<br />

the Renaissance to the present.<br />

Library Skills<br />

Courses in library skills (designated LIBS) may be applied towards:<br />

the general education requirement in information literacy;<br />

and<br />

electives.<br />

LIBS 150 Information Literacy and Research Methods (1)<br />

An introduction to the research process and methods for retrieving<br />

information in a library or through online sources. Experience in<br />

approaching research, selecting a topic, and retrieving information<br />

on topics of professional or personal interest is provided. Focus is<br />

on developing the following information literacy skills:<br />

understanding the research process; selecting relevant print and<br />

electronic sources to answer research questions; effectively using<br />

Web search engines and <strong>UMUC</strong> Information and Library Service’s<br />

electronic resources to find information; and evaluating,<br />

organizing, and correctly citing the information found. Students<br />

may receive credit for only one of the following courses: COMP<br />

111, LIBS 100, or LIBS 150.<br />

Macedonian<br />

Courses in Macedonian (designated MACE) may be applied as<br />

appropriate (according to individual program requirements)<br />

toward:<br />

the general education requirements for arts and humanities<br />

and international perspective coursework;<br />

a major or minor in humanities (when appropriate); and<br />

electives.<br />

MACE 111 Elementary Macedonian I (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) An<br />

introduction to basic vocabulary, simple sentence structures, and<br />

tenses of idiomatic Macedonian. No prior exposure to<br />

Macedonian is assumed. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing<br />

skills are developed. Focus is on oral communication. Practice in<br />

using common speech patterns is provided. Cultural topics are<br />

also read and discussed.<br />

MACE 112 Elementary Macedonian II (3)<br />

(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) Prerequisite:<br />

MACE 111. Continued development of basic vocabulary, simple<br />

sentence structures, and tenses of idiomatic Macedonian.<br />

Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are developed.<br />

Focus is on oral communication. Practice in using common speech<br />

patterns is provided. Cultural topics are also read and discussed.<br />
