CMST 100E through CMST 100P — <strong>UMUC</strong> Course Descriptions<br />

CMST 100E Introduction to Microcomputers: Networks and<br />

Communication (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100E. This course is graded on a satisfactory/<br />

D/fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to the use of computer networks to interconnect<br />

microcomputers and to the current hardware, software, and<br />

communication standards and protocols that make networking<br />

possible. Hands-on practice with typical communications software<br />

and network configuration is provided. Students may receive<br />

credit for only one of the following courses: CAPP 100E or CMST<br />

100E.<br />

CMST 100F Introduction to Microcomputers: Databases (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100F. This course is graded on a satisfactory/D/<br />

fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to database systems, including terminology and<br />

principles of database management systems. Focus is on how best<br />

to organize, manage, and access stored data, how to protect<br />

databases, and how to extract useful information. Hands-on<br />

practice with typical database software is provided. Students may<br />

receive credit for only one of the following courses: CAPP 100F,<br />

CAPP 103, CMST 103, or CMST 100F.<br />

CMST 100G Introduction to Microcomputers: Spreadsheets (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100G. This course is graded on a satisfactory/<br />

D/fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to the use of electronic worksheets to analyze forecasts<br />

and sales data, including basic terminology, formats, and other<br />

applications. Hands-on practice with typical spreadsheet software<br />

is provided. Students may receive credit for only one of the<br />

following courses: CAPP 100G, CAPP 103, CMST 103, or<br />

CMST 100G.<br />

CMST 100J Introduction to Microcomputers: Security (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100J. This course is graded on a satisfactory/D/<br />

fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to computer security. Both physical and software<br />

security and the types of computer viruses that afflict modern<br />

information systems are examined. Discussion covers the use of<br />

the operating system and antiviral software tools to protect, detect,<br />

and recover from viral attacks. Hands-on practice in applying<br />

these principles is provided. Students may receive credit for only<br />

one of the following courses: CAPP 100J or CMST 100J.<br />

CMST 100K Introduction to Microcomputers: Accessing<br />

Information via the Internet (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100K. This course is graded on a satisfactory/<br />

D/fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to the Internet and the wealth of information it<br />

contains. The focus is on practical and efficient means for gaining<br />

access to information through the use of browsers on a home<br />

computer system and search engines on the Internet. Mechanisms<br />

by which the Internet operates, security issues on the Internet,<br />

intellectual property right issues, and the ethics of the Internet<br />

are also discussed, along with other current topics involving the<br />

interface between the Internet and the citizen. Students who<br />

have already earned credit for CAPP 385, CAPP 386, CMST<br />

385, or CMST 386 cannot earn credit for CMST 100K. Students<br />

may receive credit for only one of the following courses: CAPP<br />

100K, CAPP 101C, or CMST 100K.<br />

CMST 100L Introduction to Microcomputers: Web Page<br />

Design (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100L. This course is graded on a satisfactory/D/<br />

fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to Web page design and site management. The<br />

characteristics of Web page design and navigation structures are<br />

analyzed, and typical features of current commercial software are<br />

presented. Hands-on practice with typical Web page design and<br />

site management software is provided. Students may receive credit<br />

for only one of the following courses: CAPP 100L or CMST<br />

100L.<br />

CMST 100M Introduction to Microcomputers: HTML (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100M. This course is graded on a satisfactory/<br />

D/fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to the use of HTML to create basic and advanced<br />

Web-enabled documents. Topics include creating and editing<br />

Web pages, placing HTML documents on the Web, designing<br />

Web pages with tables, and using frames in Web pages.<br />

Assignments include designing and implementing Web pages<br />

using HTML. Students may receive credit for only one of the<br />

following courses: CAPP 100M, CAPP 101H, or CMST 100M.<br />

CMST 100N Introduction to Microcomputers: Desktop<br />

Operating Systems (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100N. This course is graded on a satisfactory/<br />

D/fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to the use and configuration of graphical user<br />

interfaces, focusing on Microsoft Windows operating systems.<br />

Topics include working with Windows programs, managing files<br />

and folders using Windows Explorer, customizing Windows using<br />

the Control Panel, using Internet services in Windows, and<br />

managing shared files and resources. Students may receive credit<br />

for only one of the following courses: CAPP 100N, CAPP 101M,<br />

CAPP 101T, or CMST 100N.<br />

CMST 100P Introduction to Microcomputers: Using UNIX/<br />

Linux (1)<br />

(Formerly CAPP 100P. This course is graded on a satisfactory/D/<br />

fail basis only.) Prerequisite: CMST 100A or equivalent. An<br />

introduction to configuring and using UNIX and Linux on<br />

microcomputers and workstations. Hands-on exercises in<br />

configuring the desktop environment of a Linux operating system<br />

are included. UNIX commands, file management, the X-Window<br />

graphical user interface, and window managers such as Gnome<br />

and KDE are covered. Students may receive credit for only one of<br />

the following courses: CAPP 100P or CMST 100P.<br />
