Academic Advisement<br />

Official Evaluation<br />

The purpose of the Official Evaluation is to show students their<br />

certificate or degree standing and to allow them to select<br />

appropriate courses for their specific programs. An Official<br />

Evaluation should be requested only if the student intends to<br />

complete a University of Maryland University College certificate<br />

or degree.<br />

An Official Evaluation is based on the curriculum in effect when<br />

the student first registered with <strong>UMUC</strong> or a Maryland public<br />

two- or four-year school provided there has been no break in<br />

enrollment exceeding two years. Students are eligible for an Official<br />

Evaluation if they have taken 6 semester hours of course work<br />

with Maryland, have a grade point average of 2.0 (C) or higher,<br />

have paid the application fee, and have no financial obligation to<br />

the University.<br />

A student can obtain an Official Evaluation as soon as <strong>UMUC</strong>-<br />

<strong>Europe</strong>’s Heidelberg headquarters has received all records of<br />

previous educational experiences. These must be sent directly from<br />

each issuing institution (or other source, in the case of military<br />

documents). Thus, students should arrange to have their previous<br />

educational organizations submit these documents to University<br />

of Maryland University College, Office of Evaluations, Unit<br />

29216, APO AE 09102 as soon as possible. The Official<br />

Evaluation is provided on a Curriculum Planning Sheet. Please<br />

see the next section for additional information.<br />

Documents required for the Official Evaluation include as<br />

applicable: Request for an Official Evaluation (UMAA-026);<br />

CLEP, USAFI/DANTES, Excelsior College Exams (ECEP —<br />

formerly RCEP, ACT/PEP), etc., test results; transcripts from all<br />

colleges or universities attended; and appropriate military<br />

documents. An Official Evaluation cannot be started until an<br />

official transcript has been received from each institution attended,<br />

even when credit from one institution is posted on the transcript<br />

of another institution. All documents must be official. Form<br />

UMAA-002 for requesting transcripts from colleges or universities<br />

is available at education centers. All transcripts and military<br />

documents become the property of <strong>UMUC</strong>-<strong>Europe</strong> and can neither be<br />

returned to nor copied for the student. It is the responsibility of the<br />

student to ensure that all appropriate documents have been<br />

received by the Office of Evaluations.<br />

Students who attend a non-U.S. institution (e.g., German<br />

Gymnasium) or university for which transfer credit may be<br />

awarded should submit official documents, including secondary<br />

school documents, to the Office of Evaluations in Heidelberg.<br />

Word-for-word translations of all non-English documents must<br />

be provided. These will be forwarded to an evaluation agency for<br />

review.<br />

Updated evaluations will be provided upon request for students<br />

who have completed at least 12 semester hours of <strong>UMUC</strong> course<br />

work, maintained a grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better, and<br />

have no financial obligation to the University.<br />

Academic Advisement<br />

Curriculum Planning Sheets<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> degree-seeking students receive their official evaluation<br />

in the form of the Curriculum Planning Sheet, which serves two<br />

purposes:<br />

1. To indicate to the student the requirements which have been<br />

completed both through <strong>UMUC</strong> courses and through<br />

transfer of other credit, if applicable; and<br />

2. To show remaining requirements in each part of the certificate/<br />

degree curriculum.<br />

The Curriculum Planning Sheet should be kept up-to-date by<br />

the student and used to select suitable courses toward a <strong>UMUC</strong><br />

certificate or degree. When registering for classes, students should<br />

also refer to this Catalog to assure their selections fulfill the<br />

appropriate certificate and degree requirements. Students receiving<br />

VA educational benefits or federal financial aid are cautioned to<br />

follow the Curriculum Planning Sheet closely. No award can be<br />

made for any course that does not fit into the student’s degree<br />

program. Course selection advice is also available upon request<br />

from Maryland academic advisors.<br />

Contract for Degree<br />

The purpose of the Contract for Degree (CFD) is to assist students<br />

who plan to earn a degree with <strong>UMUC</strong>. To be eligible to request<br />

a CFD, a student must receive an Official Evaluation from<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> and complete the minimum <strong>UMUC</strong> coursework<br />

requirements specified for the degree. The CFD is valid up to the<br />

conferral of the first associate or baccalaureate degree by any<br />

school. For more information, see the <strong>UMUC</strong> degree section of<br />

this Catalog.<br />

The student requests a CFD through the Office of Evaluations<br />

in Heidelberg. Upon receipt of the request and verification of<br />

eligibility, <strong>UMUC</strong> will complete the CFD and mail it directly to<br />

the student. A copy is also sent to the education center.<br />

Servicemembers Opportunity<br />

Colleges<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> participates in the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges’<br />

Degree Programs for Military Personnel as follows:<br />

SOCAD-2 for Army personnel, SOCNAV-2 for Navy<br />

personnel, SOCCOAST-2 for Coast Guard personnel, and<br />

SOCMAR-2 for Marine personnel at the certificate and<br />

associate-degree levels.<br />

SOCAD-4 for Army personnel, SOCNAV-4 for Navy<br />

personnel, SOCCOAST-4 for Coast Guard personnel, and<br />

SOCMAR-4 for Marine personnel at the baccalaureate level.<br />
