A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
For a short month that is hard to pronounce, this one sure has a
lot going on! The Roman month Februarius was named after the
Latin term februum, which means “purification”. That sounds
appropriate for this year. February 1 celebrates Chinese New
Year. February 2 is the midpoint of our winter, but celebrated by
many as Groundhog Day, so we can learn whether winter will
last six more weeks or call it quits early. February 14 is always
Valentine’s Day, and the 21 st is Family Day. We could add
others.
After our recent ‘pause’, we look forward to GWSA activities
resuming on February 1. For now, room capacity is limited to
50%, until the next phase. Proof of vaccination using a QR Code
is required. By public health order, the wearing of masks is
required at all times except during eating or drinking or while
engaged in physically demanding activities. Full details and
updates are provided on our website.
Members will be pleased to see that the Program Committee’s
new online Activity Calendar has launched. Many activities are
happening, several have wait lists, and a few just need leaders to
get them going. The Travel Committee is planning more trips,
including Cirque du Soleil on April 24 and another mystery trip
for April.
You might want to mark your calendar for an upcoming
Seniors Showtime fundraiser at the Evergreen on June 10. While
home, you could check out some online Activities for Mind and
Body through our website - you can even go on livestreamed
tours. If you wish a menu change, our amazing chef has Bistro
683 offering frozen meals, along with the hot options available at
the Evergreen during normal times.
Our new Executive Director, Linda Jeffrey, enjoyed one day at
the Evergreen before we shut down, and is learning about what
we do, and is working towards a plethora of grant deadlines.
While member fees support most activities, the GWSA relies
heavily each year on grants received from the United Way and
other agencies, including city, provincial and federal sources,
and donors. For those, we are greatly appreciative.
The GWSA Community Support Services relies almost
exclusively on grants. We need to sing the praises of CSS widely
as the staff and volunteers have faithfully been meeting the needs
of our community’s most vulnerable seniors, even during a
pandemic. Whether through the community markets across
Guelph, or delivering meals, the Eat Well Program addresses
food insecurity. The Move Well Program promotes physical
activity through gentle exercise. The Outreach Program invites
isolated seniors to the Evergreen to become involved through social prescribing. And, our Seniors
Offering Support (SOS) Program volunteers make phone calls to those in need. CSS is very special
and surprisingly unique to the GWSA. When anyone or their family members need to find support,
the CSS is one great place to start. Details about the services and how to access them are provided
on our website.
Welcome back, again! Bring a friend by to visit, have lunch, and share everything the GWSA has
to offer. We are always looking for new members, new activity groups, and there are many
volunteer opportunities available for those looking to become involved.
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association
Seeks Board Members
The GWSA is looking for passionate older adults who are interested in working on a dynamic
team with the Board of Directors.
Be Active…Get Involved…Make Friends
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association is one of the largest seniors’ organizations of its
kind in Canada, providing diverse programs, activities, and services to Guelph and Wellington
County.
We are a not-for-profit corporation and a registered charity, managed by a volunteer Board of
Directors, with support from GWSA staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
The GWSA partners with the City of Guelph in the operation of the Evergreen Seniors
Community Centre, a state-of-the-art recreation facility. We also operate in other locations,
including the West End Community Centre and elsewhere, depending on interest and resources.
GWSA’s Community Support Services (CSS) provide additional specialized services for many
vulnerable seniors in the community.
We are committed to a future that is progressive, accountable, and innovative in providing
services to the older adult community.
The GWSA is looking for volunteers with broad based life or work experience that will
contribute to the operation of a large seniors’ organization. The organization is committed to
providing a diverse and inclusive environment that is reflective of our community. The
Evergreen Seniors Community Centre is fully accessible and easily reached by public transit.
Board duties include: Supporting programs and services for seniors, acting in the best interests of
the organization and its members, familiarity with the organization’s bylaws, procedures, and
strategic plan.
For more information, check out the GWSA website at: gwsa-guelph.ca. Interested candidates
can contact the volunteer co-ordinator, Becky MacDonald, by email at
becky.macdonald@guelph.ca or by phone: 519-822-1260 ext. 2096.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE
by Linda Green
February is Heart Month.
This month it’s time to focus on heart
health, both physically and
emotionally. As we get older, one of
the major health problems is heart
disease for both men and women.
Here are a few things you can do to
keep your heart healthy:
Exercise. During the colder months,
it’s harder to get outdoors. However,
you can go to one of the City pools
for gentle aerobics, take a variety of
exercise classes at the Evergreen
Centre, or take a walk around one of
the malls. You can even do stretches
when you’re sitting in a chair.
Diet. The key to a good diet is not to
be rigid, but rather, to make most of
your meals healthy and just
occasionally indulge. Have plenty of
fruits and vegetables each day. Eat
foods containing omega-3 like fish
and walnuts. Select whole grains and
cut back on fat and sodium. Eat
smaller portions if you aren’t doing a
lot of activities to burn off calories.
Dark chocolate (in moderation), green
or black tea & red wine (1 glass a day)
are all heart healthy. If you’re visiting
the Evergreen Centre, try some of the
delicious and nutritious lunch
specials.
Sleep. Research shows an increased
risk of coronary heart disease when
people are getting less than 5 hours of
sleep per night. Ideally, most people
should have between 7-8 hours of
sleep per night. If you have trouble
sleeping: cut back on caffeine and
don’t have any after 2 pm; nap if you
feel tired, but limit it to 20 minutes;
exercise early or mid-day: doing it
later in the day can energize you too
much; try to keep to a regular
schedule of bedtime and waking the
same time each day.
Emotions. Stress, fear, frustration and
even depression can be bad for the
heart and blood pressure and lead to
an increase in heart disease. Here are
a couple of things that are healthy for
our hearts:
Laughter. There’s a good reason
why it’s called the best medicine!
Watch comedies, read a funny book,
and hang out with people who have a
good sense of humor.
Connection. Not having much social
interaction is shown to have a
relationship to higher rates of heart
disease. Get out, find a group, take a
class, call a friend – your heart will be
lighter. With Valentine’s Day and
Family Day this month, spend time
with the ones you love and be good to
your heart!
Activities for Mind and Body
If you are finding time long on your
hands, you might want to try some links
from our “Activities for Mind and Body”
collection. We have been building this
series of web links over the past couple
of years, and some incredible content is
available.
You can take a relaxing walk through the
rainforest, go canoeing in 360 degrees,
tour a city or museum, play online
games, or learn more about the kinds of
activities you can get involved with at
the GWSA! Watch live webcams from zoos and aquariums around the world. Ride a roller coaster.
There is something for everyone!
One of the latest and amazing additions is Heygo, in the Travel section, where you actually
participate in livestreamed tours as they happen and interact with the guides. It’s free to sign up and
participate, but you may find some prompts for tips at your discretion.
You can check out the latest information here: https://gwsa-guelph.ca/activities/2044-2/
The Program Committee has launched the
GWSA Activity Calendar, so members can
now see when and where the groups are
meeting. When you view the calendar, you
can select from monthly, weekly, or agenda
(list) views as you prefer.
If you need more detail, just click on the
name of the Activity Group in the calendar,
and more information about the activity will
While we strive to keep information as
current as possible, please note that the GWSA Activity Calendar is intended as a
convenience, but it is maintained by third parties. For the most current information, please
check directly with the Activity Group Leaders.
You can access the GWSA Activity Calendar from a button on our home page. You can also
players are required to wear indoor
court shoes.
Your membership fee covers
you are a member of the GWSA,
we allow 3 free visits to give you a
chance to discover if you are able
and will enjoy this very active
sport. The yearly fee is $60.00 and
you must have an up-to-date membership
with GWSA to be a member
of our club.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. The Bunka artist
uses many different stitch techniques
in order to achieve the desired
effect of depth and interest,
but unlike other forms of needle
art, there are no knots to tie and
mistakes are easily corrected. This
group is for all skill levels and
meets every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon in Room 3.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some
fun, laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise,
friendship and fun. Membership is
available to all paid-up GWSA
members for a $10 fee every six
months. Register the first time you
play. Beginners are welcome and
instruction is available. The group
plays Tuesdays and Wednesdays
from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 30 individuals who have
joined The Silver Strummers. We
welcome ALL skill levels, beginner
through advanced! We will
provide you with all the information
you will need to get started.
If you would like to try the universally
accessible and friendly
instrument of the ukulele, please
contact Ann Sneyd at 519-830-
Silvertones
The Choir was formed in 1980 and
now boasts almost 60 members.
Our mixed group of seniors, aged
anywhere from 55 to 100, share
the love of singing - songs old and
new. We also love to entertain
with singing to spread good cheer.
For more information about joining
the choir, please call Doreen
Muir at 519-831-8323.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open
weekdays between 9:00 am and
4:00 pm and any other time the
Evergreen Centre may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $70 (plus tax) buys you access
to the Snooker Room any
time it is open and to all the snooker
you care to play.
13
Texas Hold ’Em
(The Three Amigos)
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about
16 players a week. We are situated
in the Dining Room. We charge $2
per week and pretty well all of that
goes back to the GWSA. We play
Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500
in real casino chips, and, as we do
not play for money, we work on a
point system. The one with the
most points each week is the winner.
We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm comes,
whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone
who is interested in playing. Just
follow the laughter to find us. We
welcome everyone who wants to
play and enjoys company.
We have quite a few ladies playing
at present and would always
welcome more; we do not want to
become a men’s club! Remember,
you have to be a member of the
GWSA to play.
Thank you to Mike Rooke for
his excellent leadership for many
years!
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provide an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing
the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes or
lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the
GWSA is required. We meet in
Room 2 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on
the 1st and 5th Wednesday of the
month, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
on the third Wednesday.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook — “A Lending Library”
We are now re-opened
Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
****
I am pleased to let you all know that the Book
Nook Library is now open until 4:00 p.m. If there is
not a volunteer working in the library, members may
sign out books in the binder, otherwise a volunteer
will be happy to help you.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines, we are still not
allowing puzzles to be done in the library, but hope
some time in the future, this will be available once
again.
I have a great book to tell you all about, “Enemy At
The Gates” by Kyle Mills. CIA Director Irene
Kennedy discovers a mole searching the Agency’s
database for information on Nicolas Ward, a
trillionaire who is trying to make the world a better
place to live in.
Kennedy assigns Mitch Rapp to take the job of
protecting him. In doing so, Rapp has to use Ward as
bait in an attempt to discover the traitor who has
seemingly unlimited access to government secrets.
Ward has built a compound in Southwestern
Uganda and Rapp and his team do whatever it takes
to make this place secure against any attack from
Gideon Auma and his rebels. Rapp not only has to
protect Ward, but also try to uncover the mole.
This book is full of action and suspense and I hope
you will enjoy reading it as much as I did.
We look forward to seeing you all back in the
library with lots of great books to choose from to
read.
Happy Reading,
Your bookworm and Librarian,
