Welcome to our

February issue

THIS YEAR VOTING HAS

NEVER MATTERED MORE!

On pages 44-45, Councillor Andy Kelly

explains the importance of voting in the

forthcoming local elections which will be the

biggest in Rochdale for almost 20 years with

all the local seats up for re-election.

A new year brings new challenges to our

community and on page 47, local resident

Nigel Morell focuses on the particularly

important issue of speeding and improving

road safety throughout our Ward.

The active Milnrow WI are once again able to

meet face to face and have some interesting

meetings lined up for this year so take a

look on page 46 where you will also find yet

another delicious and healthy recipe to keep

you warm during this chilly weather.

There’s the ideal ‘Park and Walk’ route on

pages 52 and 53 for any of you who fancy

taking up walking as regular exercise but

just need that extra encouragement. This has

been provided by Geoff Ogden, Walk Leader

of the Milnrow Library Walking Group, who

meet every Monday at Milnrow Library.

Until next month…

Slimming World Dirty Fries Recipe

SERVES 4

1 SYN PER SERVING

READY IN 1 HOUR

What you need:

1kg floury potatoes, such as

Maris Piper or King Edward,

cut into wedges

Low-calorie cooking spray

1 onion, finely chopped

400g can chopped tomatoes

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

3 garlic cloves, crushed

2 cooked skinless and boneless

chicken breasts, shredded

170g fat-free natural Greek yogurt

Small pack fresh parsley, roughly

chopped, reserving some to serve

1 tbsp Parmesan, coarsely grated

Mixed salad leaves, to serve

What you do:

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan

180°C/gas 6.

2. Put the wedges in a pan of boiling

water and cook for

4 minutes. Drain, then spread

the wedges out on a non-stick

baking tray. Spray with low-calorie

cooking spray and season lightly. Cook for 45 minutes or until

cooked through and golden, turning halfway.

3. While the wedges are cooking, put the onion, tomatoes,

Worcestershire sauce and 2 crushed garlic cloves in a medium-size

non-stick saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for

20 minutes, stirring often. Stir the chicken into the sauce, season

lightly, then simmer until the chicken is piping hot.

4. To make the garlic dip, mix together the yogurt, parsley and

remaining garlic, then put to one side. Spoon the chicken mixture

over the wedges, then evenly sprinkle over the reserved parsley and

Parmesan. Divide between 4 plates

and serve with a quarter of the garlic dip

per person and some mixed salad leaves.

All the staff are amazing and look after every dog as if they were their

own. I love the personal touch with the bandanas and rucksack in

which to put your dog treats and lead. Our Sprocket can’t wait to go

in the morning and sits at the door waiting for me to take him. Well

done t to all the team at the Canine Country Club!

Emma Gadsby (Sprocket)

Elvis absolutely loves the Canine Country Club and since he started

there, I have noticed that his behaviour towards other dogs has

improved so much, and he comes home every night both calm and

tired. I cannot recommend this day care enough as the staff really

treat every dog as if they were their own showing them so much

love and care.

Lucy Fisher (Elvis)

Alfie loves playing with the other dogs and comes home exhausted

every evening. As soon as I drop him off, he can’t wait to go in. Alfie

is a chihuahua that usually never leaves my side so the fact that he

runs off so easily when I drop him off says it all. I find the rates very

reasonable too.

Emmy Schofield (Alfie)

A huge thank you to everyone at the Canine Country Club for

looking after Enzo so well. He is a bit unsure about new things,

but we have seen him grow massively in confidence and he loves

playing with his new friends.

Thank you so much.

Rebecca Howarth (Enzo)

Teddy has calmed down so much when playing with our 18-year-old

Pomeranian. Teddy is shattered when he comes home, and this has

really helped me get him out of his crate during the day when we

are not at home and during the night so he can sleep on my bed.

The day care has been an absolute blessing.

Nina Keane (Teddy)

The Canine Country Club is an absolute dream come true for any

devoted dog owner with a busy schedule. Django wags his tail in

delight when we mention puppy school and always greets the staff

with utter devotion when he arrives.

The staff are something else! So committed to providing the

best care and training, I cannot begin to tell you the difference

in Django’s behaviour since he’s been attending. I cannot

recommend this place enough. Absolutely amazing!

Voting has never

mattered more!

This May will see the biggest local election in our borough in almost

20 years. Local Councillor Andy Kelly writes about the importance of

taking part in democracy. (NB This is NOT a party-political message!)

Across the 20 wards in Rochdale,

Heywood, Middleton and the

Pennines - all 60 council seats will

be up for grabs on the 5th May.

This means that everyone eligible will be

able to cast three votes to decide which

three councillors they want to represent

their area. Each vote is equal so the three

candidates on each ballot with the most

votes will be elected. There are 60 seats

on Rochdale Council so the first party to

gain 31 seats will run it.

It’s come about because we have been

building more houses in the borough

and some wards have more houses than

others (and therefore people/ voters in

each ward). The Boundary Commission

are responsible for making sure that

all wards are of a similar size (+ -10%).

When they looked at Rochdale in 2020,

Kingsway and West Middleton were

substantially bigger that other areas

which triggered a need to change the

ward boundaries. Change even one ward,

and you legally have to have an “all out”

election.

In each of the 20 wards, parties can field

a maximum of three candidates each to

try and win the three seats up for grabs -

so we might be seeing some pretty long

ballot papers! Big change is possible

too as in the past all out elections have

created big swings and changes of

power.

They can of course strengthen the vote of

councillors who are seen to be doing well.

Every year I hear similar phrases about

people’s voting habits too…

“I’m not registered to vote.”

It is pretty easy to register to vote.

All you need is your National Insurance

number, and you visit:

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

44

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

“I actually don’t know what to do.

I’ve never voted.”

This is not as unusual as you think. Many

adults are embarrassed to ask too but

it’s fairly straightforward. When you’ve

registered, go to your local polling station

(or via postal vote) and you’ll get a ballot

paper with the different candidates on it.

Simply write an “X” in the box next to the

name you want to vote for. This year you

will get THREE votes- so THREE X’s.

“I forget to vote - I’m often busy

and work long hours.”

In a local election (particularly in a nongeneral

election year) it’s not unusual to

have a turn out of between 25-35%. This

means only 3 in 10 voters actually bother

to take part. However, if you have a postal

vote, the likelihood of voting is doubled- it

is around 70% voter turnout. There’s lots of

reasons for this but the main one I would

argue is you have a fortnight to do it,

instead of the 15 hrs on polling day! You

will need to fill in a physical form for this

which you can get here: www.rochdale.

gov.uk/council-and-democracy/

elections/Pages/postal-voting.aspx

“My vote won’t make any

difference”

“I’m fed up with politicians and

politics in general”

I can’t disagree with this one mainly but

if you’re not happy with your current

council, you can change it. But you have

to vote, and in order to vote you need

to register. There is always the option to

stand for election yourself!

Voting and the democratic process is

vital for a thriving society in my opinion

and the more people who take part, the

more engaged communities are in the

decision making around them. It breeds

better decision making and makes

politicians more accountable- and that

can’t be a bad thing, can it?

TAKE PART ON MAY 5TH 2022!

Councillor

Andy Kelly

Yes, it will. Remember there are around

9000 voters in each ward with about 1/3

vote. This means you need about 1250

votes to win your seat and it’s not many

at all really. In the past few years, some

local elections in Rochdale have been

decided by less than 20 votes…

Lentil Stew

SERVES 4

We’ve gone for a lentil stew this

month using store cupboard

ingredients, healthy after all the

Christmas indulgence, super easy

and warming in this chilly weather.

It’s really tasty. This recipe can be

frozen. Leave to thaw and reheat

gently before serving.

INGREDIENTS

1 carrot, diced

2 lees, finely sliced

2 celery stals, finely sliced

onion, finely chopped

1 x 400g tin tomatoes

150ml vegetable stock

225g lentils (dried puy lentils or green

lentils work best)

A little parsley to serve

METHOD

1. Gently fry the carrot, leeks, celery and

onion in a little butter or oil until soft

2. Add the remaining ingredients,

cover and simmer until the lentils

are tender and the vegetables are

cooked (aprox 45 mins)

3. Season and serve with a sprinkle of

parsley and some crusty bread

A New Year Brings Challenges

to Our Community

A major challenge to our Councillors

and local and regional government

officers is to explore all options

in the search for measures to

improve road safety and speeding

throughout our Ward.

Discussions have already started with a

number of agencies including GMP, with

a view to financing and implementing

such measures as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, there are no instant

solutions to the unacceptable behaviour

of a minority, but rest assured that

Councillors and Council Officers will be

exerting every effort in the coming weeks

to find answers.

Covid has provided opportunities for

all of us to take more time to enjoy our

rural surroundings, but this enjoyment is

blighted by fly-tipping and indiscriminate

littering which diminishes the amenity

of numerous locations. How difficult is it

for visitors to bag up their food wrappers

and coffee cups and deposit them in the

numerous bins which we have striven to

provide over the last decade?

Inconsiderate and dangerous driving

should be a menace at the forefront

of everyone`s mind all the time. Narrow

streets and lanes are a feature of many

Wards in our Borough. Motorists need to

adjust their mindset when navigating

these routes as these routes are

often used by the younger and more

vulnerable members of our community

and the utmost care is needed to keep

them safe.

Young walkers and runners as well as

cyclists and horse riders often use our

secluded lanes to hone their skill, you can

help keep them safe by adjusting speed

and observation appropriately. The local

horse-riding community has done it`s

best to highlight danger, by holding a

Pass Wide and Slow event in the Autumn

and their efforts should not be forgotten

in the New Year.

Off-road motorcyclists are still a threat

to our natural environment and other

legitimate road users. There have been

many encounters between local drivers

and these machines which are often

untaxed, uninsured and unroadworthy

as well as being ridden by under aged

riders. The riders of these machines

use Rights of Way which, by law, they

are prohibited from using. A number

of them use local moorland for their

activities and this is not only degrading

an important asset in the fight against

Climate Change but is also having a

detrimental impact on the livelihoods of

local farmers who are the custodians of

our moorland.

Should you encounter such antisocial

behaviour, you can do your bit to assist

by reporting matters on the GMP Live

chat facility on their website. This is a

quick and easy means of reporting

which will bring these issues to the

attention of the authorities.

Please Stay Safe and have a

Successful and Prosperous 2022.

From The Archives

Almost every boundary set around a

part of England may be identified as

a parish and most parishes have their

own consecrated parish church open for

Christian worship and the pastoral care

of the people within that boundary.

The parish church in Rochdale is

administered as the Church of St Chad,

Chad being a 7th century churchman

possibly coming from a family of

Northumbrian nobility who had been a

student at Lindisfarne and became Abbot

of Lastingham and for a period, Bishop of

York. Chad died in the year 672 and the

town of Chadderton is most likely named

after him.

As mother church in the parish of Rochdale,

the earliest building of St Chad’s is a matter

of debate. Certainly there was a church on

the site overlooking the town of Recedham

or Rachedale in either the late Saxon period

or just after the Norman conquest, the mid

11th to early 12th centuries, although the

date is open to question. What is recorded

however is that in 1194 land was given by

Adam de Spotland for religious purposes

in order (as Wild in the 1970’s suggests) ‘to

save his soul and that of his family.’ The

current handsome gothic structure standing

up on its lofty ridge is not exactly the one

from the middle ages although the tower is

reputedly the oldest part of the building.

The siting of the church has been the

subject of the ‘fairy builders’ myth whereby

on a number of occasions the stones and

materials that had been assembled by

the River Roch near Newgate where the

church was supposed to be built, were

ROCHDALE PARISH CHURCH

mysteriously and at night re-gathered at the

top of the hill where the church now stands.

Eventually accepting this supernatural

indication of its proper site required 124

church steps to be laid leading to the

religious place. Less romantically, the real

reason for the site would have been its

prominent place near a raised earthwork

which formed a nearby hill sometimes

called a ‘castle’ which overlooked the

valley and the Roch. Notwithstanding any

supernatural beginnings which would have

almost certainly have been discredited by

him, the first vicar of the church of St Chad

was Geoffrey de Lacey, Dean of Whalley in

1194. On Geoffrey’s death Roger de Lacey

gave the church to the Cistercian brothers

of Stanlow who later moved to Whalley

Abbey. Thereafter the vicars were Sir

William de Dumplinton in 1238, John de

Blackburne in 1250 and Roger de Marland

in 1277.

Structurally the building has been changed

over the centuries although Wild in his

short book on the subject suggests that

the remains of a Saxon wall were found

in the north west corner of the churchyard

as evidence of an early church. However,

re-building was carried out between 1470

and 1480 and, as a gift from Robert Belfield,

extensions added around 1530. It would

seem that the building became dilapidated

in the 18th century to such an extent that

Lord Byron paid for general renovation of

its walls and the roof. In the 19th century

a clock set in the tower was removed and

more recently Canon Nightingale ordered

work costing £40,000 carried out in 1952.

48

Architecturally there are interesting external

features to the church such as the West

door which has twin angels (one holding a

harp the other a timpani), the carvings of

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on the

tower as well as three fish representing the

roaches in the River Roch. Erected in 1873

the current porch replaced an older one

ordered by Henry Pigot the vicar in 1700

over which stands a fine carving of St Chad

holding up a church with angels to either

side of him.

There are different entrances to the

churchyard leading to the Parish Church,

one is by climbing the 127 steps, another

by the Lychgate and stocks and a third

by the western wall (a private entrance).

Interestingly, this high western wall was

erected by Dr Tunstall vicar between

1757-62 allegedly to prevent his daughters

playing with the local children for fear that

‘they might acquire a northern accent.’

In its interior in 1845 the church was known

to be heated by steam pipes. In the 19th

century Dr Molesworth told Dr Dearden,

both important townsmen, that people

were feeling the cold in church to which

Dearden replied ‘Tell them to drink a quart

of ale before they come to church and they

will noan be starved.’ Looking up from

their pews the cold congregation would

have seen a memorial window in the West

of the church designed by Burne-Jones

and dedicated to the parents of Clement

Royd with glass by William Morris. One

amusing aside concerning the church is an

entry in the churchwarden’s records of 1643

identifying expenses for ‘three hedgehogs,’

these being bought to keep the church free

of insects in the rushes which in those days

were laid to carpet and warm the interior of

the building.

If you have any comments about Rochdale Parish Church I’d be delighted to hear

from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact

Gary Heywood-Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave your comments

by text or by recorded message at 07562 752774.

Rochdale Philatelic Society

Meeting - 14th December 2021

Aptly, a display of Victorian Christmas Cards began our seasonal

meeting of members philatelic items. It was noted that 1960 was the

last time Post Office Staff worked on Christmas day and from 1963 to

1970 the Post Office replied to all letters addressed to Father Christmas.

The next presentation covered the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth

Games and included stamp memorabilia, advertisements, and tickets.

Items from a specialist Malta collection followed and included WW1

Prisoner of War (pow) held on the island. We also looked at a display of

New Zealand Christmas Stamps starting with single stamp issues from

1960 to 1970 after which Christmas Stamp Sets were then issued each

year after 1970. This was followed by Italian

postcards mailed from tourist hot spots and

finished off with a colorful display of UK

Christmas stamp booklets.

NEXT MONTH’S MEETING WILL BE

A PRESENTATION ON GB POST

MARKS AND AUSTRALIAN STAMPS.

Meetings are held at the Rochdale

Unitarian Church on the second

Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm.

Man of Rochdale raises over

£17,000 for Springhill Hospice

The annual Springhill Hospice Man of Rochdale

Luncheon returned last November at Rochdale Golf

Club after a two-year absence and raised a staggering

£17,070 for the Hospice.

The event saw the most dedicated and inspiring men from Rochdale

celebrated for their hard work.

This year’s deserving winner was Lieutenant Commander Lawrence Scholes

Smith. Lawrence is known for his involvement with the sea cadets and has

helped raised in excess of £300,000 to help fund them.

This year’s event was held in a new location, Rochdale Golf Club. The

luncheon saw 200 guests enjoy a delicious four course meal and were entertained by guest speaker,

footballing legend, Jan Molby kindly sponsored by Performance Doorset Solutions Ltd.

This year’s award saw over 30 local men nominated for the award.

Vicki Murray, Corporate and Partnerships Fundraiser from Springhill Hospice said;

‘This year’s event was incredibly successful even in still quite difficult times. Rochdale Golf Club was a

fantastic venue, it was full to capacity and the money raised will make a massive difference to Springhill

Hospice. Many thanks to our sponsors, Jackson Jackson & Sons, Performance Doorset Solutions and

Carlsberg Marston brewery and many congratulations to this year’s winner.’

Update from St Thomas’, Newhey

and St James’, Milnrow

Ah February!

The month when St Valentine is on everyone’s mind.

Actually, Valentine’s Day as we know it has little

to do with the saint himself. In fact, we know very

little about St Valentine apart from the story that he

was beheaded in the 3rd century on the orders of the

Roman emperor. He apparently fell foul of Emperor

Gothicus by refusing to stop trying to persuade people

to become Christian. There are two stories that are

very similar, so it is possible that there were two St

Valentines – one in Rome and the other in Terni which

is in Umbria, Italy.

Valentine is the patron saint of beekeepers and

epileptics so how did he come to be associated with

romance? Some think it’s because of a story that he

helped men get married to avoid being forced to join

the army, others because, just before he was executed,

he apparently sent a note to a child whose blindness he

had healed and signed it because if we get these two

right everything else flows naturally. The point of the

laws Christians follow (and the laws of the land) are to

make living together as a community work. If we care

about each other, we will not do those greedy, hurtful,

dangerous things that make us mistrust our neighbours

and make others unhappy.

So, here’s to love, the romantic kind and the practical

kind! Let’s take a minute on St Valentine’s Day to

celebrate all the people who take care of us, help

provide for our needs and consider our feelings because

love truly does make the world a better place.

Revd Janet Pitman

PARK & WALK NO. 1 - KINGSWAY

This is a very easy, leisurely, walk suitable for people

who have never got into the habit of taking outdoor

walks, but who want a healthier lifestyle and need

encouragement to take the first steps. If you are

not a regular walker, but travel about by car, try this

‘Park and Walk’ route around the Kingsway Business

Park. It is a circular walk, less than 1 1/2 miles, ( 2.4

km ) on good, surfaced paths and bridleways, within

a pleasant green and natural environment. Good

walking shoes or trainers are recommended.

The Route

Drive along the A640 Elizabethan Way, turn into

Harbour Lane then left and up Ashfield Lane to its

end where there are parking bays.

Over to the right there is a small nature reserve, a

lake surrounded by reedbeds, bullrush and wetland

grasses and the Stanney Brook.

Continue up the footpath where the landscape

widens revealing another lake, the tree lined Stanney

Brook Park and panoramic views of the hills in the

distance.

Start the walk following the direction sign Stanney

Brook Cycleway.

At the end of the footpath turn left along the old

original Lower Lane, past the now derelict Grade II

listed Dixon Green Farmhouse (circa 1685).

Go up the stone sett bridleway (originally an

extension of .Ashfield Lane). At the top cross over

John Milne Avenue and continue up the stone

sett bridleway emerging alongside the Stanney

Brook again.

Continue following the sign Kingsway Business Park

Broad Lane.

Follow the Brook down under the road tunnel then

right to our original starting point..

Cross over Sir Isaac Newton Way and continue along

the Lower Lane bridleway past the Electrical Sub

Station on the right to the signposted bridleway left.

LATEST PROPERTY UPDATE

PROPERTY UPDATE

The buoyancy in the property market looks set to continue in

2022 as the ‘race for space’ continues, in turn this continues

to fuel the rise in house prices in Rochdale, which came out

third in terms of highest areas for growth in a recent report

from the Nationwide; Rental properties also continue to be

in very high demand.

As Revilo Homes start our sixth year in Rochdale, 2021 has been another busy

year for us, with over £30million of property sales; all whilst maintaining our

impeccable record for Client Feedback across Feefo, Google and Facebook

reviews. We are also delighted to have created a number of new jobs as we

increased our staffing levels to match demand and we continue to recruit and

train staff into 2022.

DEMAND FOR RURAL LIVING

The housing market is typically busiest in the first couple of months of the year,

with a spike in new listings as well as a surge in buyer interest.

There are bound to be more economic headwinds this year, the Bank of

England signalled their view with a recent small increase in interest rates but

the ‘pandemic-led’ search for space has further to run. Office-based workers

are still recalibrating their working practices and their home life, and some may

choose to make a permanent move, because they no longer have to live so

close to their place of work.

This is likely to maintain the demand and prices for homes in Rochdale, but if

you are thinking of selling, now is the time. Prices are expected to soften as the

year progresses. There is more room for prices to grow in the more affordable

areas, and Zoopla forecast average price rises of 4% next year, and 1.2 million

transactions, roughly the same level as between 2014 and 2018.

RENTAL CHANGES

The rental property market is seeing very high levels of demand but it will be

affected by the challenges surrounding current and pending legislation. All

private rented homes must meet energy rating of Band C by 2025 (2028 if the

tenant in occupation does not change) this will be costly for many private and

portfolio landlords, particularly in older homes or period properties.

Other legal requirements for new builds, such as electric vehicle (EV) chargers,

may also apply to rented properties too, as the UK Climate Change Committee

(CCC) looks to achieve its goal of electric vehicles only by 2032. It’s likely there

will continue to be a shortage of rental properties that will impact rental values,

and rents will most likely carry on rising.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the team here, we would like to offer our

very best wishes for the year ahead. We look forward to being of service to you.

Kind Regards

Jemma Holden, Managing Director
