Recently, Pat Stocker and her husband Tom nominated

her brother and sister-in-law Frank and Peggy for Feed

Our Friends. “My brother Frank just came home from the

hospital,” she says. “He and his wife Peggy really deserve

a break after what they have been through.” EZ employee

Olivia Matthews delivered Thai lobster and coco salmon

curry and peanut butter pie for dessert.

Do you have a great friend who deserves a delicious meal,

or know of a community member who goes above and

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.

The place: George’s Place — a favorite of ours especially during the

off-season when ordering lunch in Cape May is a bit tricky. We stopped

at their original location on Beach Avenue.

The server: Dylan has been part of the Kara Restaurant Group for

five seasons. He sticks to Vintage — one of their restaurants on the

grounds of the Physick Estate — during the summertime, but in the

off-season, George’s Place is where he makes his money. “It’s such a

great company to work for — if you work for one, you have the possibilities

of working for them all,” he tells us. “Everyone in the Karapanagiotis

family and all management really cares for each employee and if

we’re putting in the effort, they’ll help us with whatever we need.” The

comfortable environment isn’t the only thing that keeps Dylan coming

back each season, it’s also the food. “My favorite thing on the menu is

the havarti panini, but I usually get it on a wrap and it’s delicious,” he

says. That’s Jack’s favorite lunch order and he can definitely attest to it.

The food: Kayla and Nicole went in for breakfast on Friday morning,

something they don’t often get to do. It was a pretty gloomy and

rainy morning, so Beach Avenue was the opposite of “jumpin.” Nice for

us because we were seated right away. First things first — we got our

coffee before we thought about anything else. Morning routines were

thrown a little off kilter and coffee went down later than usual so we had

to act fast to avoid crankiness. Kayla had her favorite, the Limoncello

French toast while Nicole went for the traditional benedict. We were

happy and full for hours to follow.

The takeaway: George’s Place not only has a great breakfast menu,

but lunch is always delicious. Check it out at one of their four locations

— the original on Beach Avenue, Cape May Court House, Wildwood

Crest and their most recent in the Washington Commons on Ocean

Street in Cape May. And don’t forget about all the other great spots that

will be opening for the season like Vintage, Younger Brother, Shamone

and SCOLA.

Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

People often ask me, “Terry? Why

do you hate this time of year so

much?” Well, I’ll tell you why. Last

Wednesday at 6pm it was 68 degrees

and last Thursday at 6pm it was 34

degrees with intermittent flurries. I mean…

Okay, WCFA-LP 101.5, I’m onto you. After

kicking off the 8am hour last Thursday with

back-to-back Squeeze and REM songs (my

two favorite bands and a feat perhaps never

accomplished before on radio on purpose),

this week it was “What’s With Terry.” Not only

is this 1980 song a hilarious banger, it’s performed

by The Undertones. The Undertones!

And I write The Undertow! It works on so

many levels.

About five songs later they played the sublime

“Some Fantastic Place,” which is not only

the best Squeeze song but is maybe just the

best song. From 8am to 10am was, once again,

a great mix of new wave hits and obscurities. I

can’t speak for the other 22 hours of the day, but

these two were very solid. Thanks.

The wife paid a surprise visit to my day job

at Cape Island Foods, where she got to witness

firsthand the thrilling task of me putting labels

on jars, putting those jars in boxes and stacking

those boxes on a shelf. I know, it’s like being

married to Evel Knievel. I believe I may have

also invented a medical condition — Peanut

Butter Elbow. Occurs after spending six-plus

consecutive hours screwing lids on jars of peanut

butter. True story.

My boss at CIF, Vince Shetzline, after

watching me build a bunch of shelves and racks

last week, suggested I write about shelves and

racks in this week’s column. Don’t tell me what

to write, Vince! I’ve been doing this a long time

and know how to put together a column! I don’t

need suggestions from normies like you! I am

my own man who speaks his own words and

I cannot be bought or persuaded! You can take

that to the bank! But it was about four racks

and six shelves.

I’ve given CIF Director of Peanut Butter,

Don Brag, a little grief the last couple

weeks. That was before I knew he drove a

silver-and-crimson Dodge Charger. I hereby

rescind all previous jokes and will not be making

any future jokes at his expense. Chargers

make you joke-proof.

Crazy Idiot of the Week: Tommy Caruso

went flying past the North Cape May Wawa

on his speed bike WITHOUT A HELMET! Tsk

tsk. It’s okay, though. Recent geological studies

have proven his skull to be the hardest substance

on Earth. (Tommy is going to punch me

in the face so hard one of these days…)

Angel of the Week: Sandy Mannik (and, by

extension, her husband Ralph) is, perhaps, my

#1 fan, and not in that creepy Kathy-Bates-in-

Misery way (okay, maybe a little in

that Kathy-Bates-in-Misery way).

She not only hits the ol’ tip jar

several times a night (seriously, I

have to cut her off sometimes), she

made me feel pretty okay about

that cupid costume on Valentine’s

Day.

After four years of dropping

off Exit Zero at Evolution Salon &

Spa in North Cape May it finally

occurred to me to ask hairstylist

Scott his last name. It’s Manns.

So now you know. Scott, buddy,

if by chance some miracle occurs

and I’m in need of a haircut I can’t

give myself in 30 seconds with a

beard trimmer, you’ll be the first

guy I call.

Marshall, the Nauti Spirits

guard dog, was on patrol last

Thursday morning, but without

his usual vim and vigor (i.e. he

wasn’t barking at me) which can

mean only one thing; the little guy

got snipped! Am I right? Those

poor, poor puppy balls…

After watching the first two

episodes of season four of The

Marvelous Mrs Maisel I am now 3%

Jewish.

Exit Zero Filling Station manager

Katie Dowe made the fatal

mistake of bringing me fresh and

plentiful drinks while I powered

through what we’ll just call “The

Cupid Episode.” This means she

has now become my personal

drink freshener. Here’s the thing

I like about the drinks she pours

me: they’re strong. Here’s the

thing I don’t like about the drinks

she pours me: nothing.

One of the things I love about

my wife is that, no matter how

many times she’s sung a song, she

still looks at me with wide-eyed

bewilderment and asks, “How

does this go?” Except “Happy

Birthday”. She’s got that one fairly

locked in.

Jerry Kolber has, without

complaint, learned every song I’ve

asked of him, and always plays

them with a smile no matter

how dastardly some of the chord

changes are. Thank you, Jerry!

New Reader of the Week:

Gary Daniels from Phoenixville,

PA. We had a nice chat at Cafe

64 in the ferry terminal last week

where he had no idea just how

famous I was until I told him. He

told me Hall of Fame catcher Mike

Piazza had a brother who was a

better baseball player than he was.

I did not know that. Now I do.

Gary was also one of two people

within 15 minutes who told

me how much they like my glass

frames, which I’ve been wearing

for going on two years and upon

which nobody had ever commented

before. Weird.

I’m not accepting anymore

Facebook friend requests unless

they come with a message saying

“Hello, I’m a human.” And maybe

a credit card number.

Sex is great and all but did

you ever clear a really hard level of

Candy Crush in one move?

Marry Me, starring J-Lo and

Owen Wilson, streaming on

Peacock, is exactly what you think

it is — a throwback to the 90s heyday

of the RomCom/Chick Flick.

And that’s okay.

Bud Next is the beer I’ve been

dreaming of for nearly 52 years.

Zero carbs and is beer.

Now is the best time to drive

through Harbor View parking lot.

It’s flat and smooth and you better

enjoy it now because in a few

months it’s going to look like a

bombed-out runway at a Beirut

airport.

Peacemaker was… fine, though

I’m a little over the it’s-funny-because-the-superhero-said-the-fword

style of humor wrought by

Deadpool. And if you know anything

about the state of modern

comic books, then you had no

doubt from the moment she was

introduced in episode one that the

non-super powered out-of-shape

Black lesbian was going to save

the day. Nothing against out-ofshape

Black lesbians. I am also out

of shape. And a lesbian (trapped in

a man’s body). Never been Black,

though. Still, two outta three…

’Til next week, don’t get

caught in The Undertow.

Funny thing about spoiler alerts... after

a film’s been out for a few months, can

the plot really be spoiled? I still can’t

tell people what happens in The Sixth

Sense, a masterpiece in suspense from

20+ years ago. In the case of Spider-Man: No

Way Home, I guess I’m spoiling some — but

nothing more than you’d catch on a trailer.

The idea of parallel realities is nothing

new. The concept goes back to “evil twin”

plots of ancient mythology. To say the Marvel

Universe takes the concept to new levels is

a multidimensional understatement. Spider-

Man: No Way Home rips holes in the fabric of

all we know.

This was the first film that brought me

back to theaters post pandemic. What choice

did I have? It would seem that “no way home“

had no way to be viewed at home. It’s still in

theaters and not online. You could say this film

single handedly brought audiences back to the

theater (well, at least it led the way).

Humor is the “universal” theme of this

flick. In this installment, Tom Holland plays

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

Spider-Man. But he’s not the only one. Andrew

Garfield and Tobey Maguire also reprise their

role as the webslinger. How? Dr. Strange

(Benedict Cumberbatch) allows for a spell

that brings anyone who knew Peter Parker was

Spider-Man from not just our world but other

realities as well. Yes, it is about as comic as it

all sounds. That’s why this film spends a lot of

the time delivering its twists and turns with

tongue firmly planted in cheek.

This movie has several compelling elements,

but none more important than its

uncanny ability to not take itself so seriously.

The banter between Dr. Strange and Spider-

Man is priceless. He can barely tolerate the

adolescent hero and spends much of the movie

undoing damage Parker does.

This is not to say the movie doesn’t have

profound moments. Those scenes play out

beautifully. In fact, if they hadn’t, I’m not sure

how I’d feel about the film overall. Although

I’m not a big fan of having too many characters,

the pace and energy of this film goes a

long way to simply allowing us to have fun.

My favorite villain in the Spider-Man series has

always been Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina).

To see the kids of this Spidey universe giggling

at his name is worth the price of admission.

Despite the deliberate silliness, the visuals

and action in this film set themselves worlds

apart from anything before. Pun intended. If

you want to understand the universe Marvel

is unfolding, No Way Home is your passport to

explore.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

Do you hear a raven? Maybe. Once

extirpated as a breeder in New

Jersey, this iconic bird of wilderness

regions has returned and is nesting

in portions of northern Cape

May and Cumberland Counties. Larger than

American and Fish Crow, our most common

corvids, the birds are distinguished by their

vocal array that includes growls, chortles and

“caw” notes. At close range and from below,

the raven’s wedge-shaped tail is distinctive.

The return of the raven can be attributed

to the reforestation of New Jersey and proliferation

of road-killed deer. Unlike Peregrine

Falcons, ravens enjoyed no artificial reintroduction

effort. The birds just naturally

expanded as New Jersey’s logged over environs

restored themselves. First discovered nesting

on the Kittatinny Ridge in Northwestern NJ

in the 1970s, by 2000 the birds were established

near the Tuckahoe River and a pair

has famously bred on the Hoboken bluffs

since the 1990s which should surprise no-one.

Breeding from the Arctic to the Sahara Desert,

these hardy corvids are year-round residents

in Arctic-native villages and are quick to

build their bulky stick nests on any elevated

structures, including the radars of abandoned

DEW-line sites. In the lower48, telecommunication

towers seem to be prized nesting

locations. In Cumberland County the birds

seem drawn to abandoned or lightly used

sand processing towers. It is only a matter of

time before the old submarine watch tower

astride Sunset Blvd catches a raven’s eye.

My current interest in ravens stems from

the abundance of ravens where I am currently

vacationing. Drawn to the pistachio

trees budding here on the Central Coast of

California, I’ve seen 150 birds in a soaring

kettle (or flock). My friend Ted Swem of

Fairbanks, AK advises that birds use the heat

cast off by the power plant in Anchorage to

gain altitude before setting their wings and

gliding to roost. In our many cross-country

drives, I’ve discovered that ravens are the

most abundant bird in the west. At desert rest

areas along Interstate 40 you can count on just

two species, the hardy raven and ubiquitous

House Sparrow, an introduced desert finch

that has taken North America by storm.

So, what’s my point? Nature’s capacity

to adapt. From ravens to House Sparrows

if there is a niche to be filled, there is a bird

species poised to exploit it. House Sparrows

today, ravens tomorrow. Get ready the natural

world is changing and we in Cape May have a

ring-side seat.

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, relax with a massage!

One of the great hardships of this

pandemic was the absence of platonic

touch. Without human contact,

like office handshakes, “skin

hunger” made isolation harder,

especially for people who live alone. Humans

have long understood the power of touch —

healers in Asia recommended massage as

early as 3000 BCE. Hippocrates agreed 2000

years later, recommending a daily massage

for optimum health. Touch is crucial throughout

the human life span — premature babies

are more likely to thrive with skin-to-skin

contact. People with chronic illnesses may get

pain relief through massage, and a hand or

foot massage, as with a manicure or pedicure,

can reduce fear in people with dementia.

For most of history, massage was a luxury

reserved to people of great wealth. Since

the late 20th century, however, massage has

become more affordable, and many people

now treat themselves to a massage on a regular

basis. A gift certificate for a massage is a

common birthday or Valentine’s Day gift, and

doctors frequently recommend massage as

part of a treatment plan. Women often choose

a spa day as a way to reconnect, so you’ll find

groups like bridesmaids gathered around the

cucumber water, but men also make up 30

percent of customers.

You should be comfortable before and

during your massage. When you make your

appointment, ask what to expect. Tips of

about 20 percent are customary. Ask about

Covid-19 protocols. You may have to fill out

a form alerting the masseuse to any medical

issues and explaining what you want from

the massage. You will be asked to disrobe,

but only as far as you are comfortable. Nude

is easier because you can avoid getting oil

on your clothing, and you will be covered by

a sheet on the table. Avoid big meals beforehand

and don’t go if you are ill. Alcohol and

massage don’t mix, and you shouldn’t go hungover.

Don’t be embarrassed if your body

makes strange noises, or if you fall asleep.

Cape May has many options for massage.

Cape May Day Spa, 607 Jefferson Street, 609-

898-1003, offers a range of experiences, from

all-day indulgence to a simple manicure. Sea

Spa, inside Congress Hall, has a special treat

for weary legs and feet, special prenatal massages,

and a stretch-oriented massage. Call

698-884-6543. The Well offers services like

the Gua Sha massage which uses a special

roller, made of jade or quartz, to increase circulation

for your face and neck. Book online at

wellmassagecenter.com.

The Answer Lady invites inquiries from

gentle readers on all manner of relationship

quandaries, matters of the

heart and ethics. If you’d like to send

a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,

simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate

the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

I am engaged to a bank executive who

is making his way up the corporate ladder.

I imagine by the time we get married in

December, he will be transferred up north. He

also has political ambitions. I love that and

I think I’d make a perfect partner. However,

before I moved here, I was an exotic dancer and

part-time escort in Florida. He knows none of

this because I also had a job as a pet groomer

and opened my own business. I am not

ashamed, but it may not sit right with others,

especially his family who has strong religious

convictions. How can I be honest and keep our

relationship intact? — Hidden Truth

Dear Hidden

You should have signed your letter Hidden

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Lies. Sins of omission are still lies because

your relationship is built on a perception of not

who you are but who you purport to be. You are

still the person he fell in love with, but you have

an unknown past. You admit he has ambitions

— you don’t want it to come out in social media

during a campaign or key job promotion.

Before the invitations go out, be honest with

him. Meanwhile, reserve a Tension Tamer

Massage at Cape May Day Spa to help fortify

you. Have courage.

Dear Answer Lady

My roommate and I have been close

friends since high school. He recently started

dating a woman I do not like. Last week, she

popped in to pick up something she “left

behind” while my friend was still at work. She

wasted no time coming on to me. Touching

my arm. Suggesting we should go out to lunch

sometime. Asking me if I had any wine in

the house. What should I do? My roommate

already knows I don’t like her. I do not intend to

lose a friend because of her. And who knows?

Maybe she’s just setting me up to get me out of

the picture so she can move in. — Suspicious

Dear Suspicious

Play it cool. The Answer Lady suggests

casually telling your roommate that she

came over. In fact, tell him anytime there is

a pop in or worse a text or other social media

contact. Let him figure out the rest. Focus on

strengthening your friendship. Make sure you

have guys night out once a week. Mud Hen

Brewing is just the ticket.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

ZEUS is a handsome year-and-a-half-old

boy who came to the shelter when his owners

could no longer care for him. He has a lot of

energy and needs gentle training and handling.

His leash skills are improving and at this

point in his training, should be the only pet in

the home. Zeus will be a wonderful companion

for an active family with breed experience.

STORM is a sweet and gentle big girl who

came to the shelter when her family moved

and couldn't take her along. She is 95 pounds

of happiness. Storm gets a lot of exercise in the

yard, and she has excellent leash skills. She is

friendly to any human that comes near her,

and does well with other dogs, cats and children.

She will make a wonderful family pet.

NOAH is a friendly, nine-year-old boy who

came to the shelter when his family lost their

home. He lived with children, and he is comfortable

with other dogs and cats. Noah loves

walks and his leash skills are improving. He

is also crate trained and loves to go for rides

in the car. Noah loves human interaction and

would make a wonderful companion.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Four beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

SASHA is a friendly, four-year-old kitty with

a bent ear — one of the many things that make

her special. She came to the shelter when her

owner could no longer care for her. She has

lived in a quiet, indoor home and would be

best if adopted into the same. She is housetrained,

spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.

MISS PIGGY AND FOZZIE are a matched

pair of captivating kittens. These two inseparable

friends are affectionate, playful and love

a good, long nap. It would be best if they were

adopted together into a loving family. Miss

Piggy and Fozzie would be good in a home

with other cats, dogs and children. If interested

in this duo, contact the shelter.

COMMODORE is a gorgeous cat that came

to the shelter as a stray. He is a three-yearold

sweetheart who was shot with bbs and

has FIV. FIV does not affect his quality of life.

Commodore is neutered and up to date on all

vaccinations. He would be good in a home

with other cats and children. If interested in

adopting Commodore, contact the shelter.
