OPEN 7 DAYS - FREE PARKING - 100M FROM ASDA ROCHDALE
Welcome to our
March issue
Spring has nearly sprung and as we hope
for warmer weather to enable us to spend
more time in the great outdoors, there
is an exciting new project planned for
Stanney Park, full details on pages 44 and
45. Councillors Andy Kelly, Irene Davidson
and local resident Ben Johnson recently
met up to discuss possible new projects
in the park. Ben is appealing for local
people to come together and volunteer
some of their time to make this open
space more attractive and appealing.
Reverend Janet Pitman has written
another interesting article focusing on
how Lent has evolved over the years.
Whether you decide to give something
up or not, it’s an opportunity to look at the
importance and value of prayer.
Milrow Library Walking Group are
celebrating their sixth anniversary and
this month reflect on the challenges they
faced during Covid as well as the many
miles they have covered over the years.
We wish them all the very best for the

Stage change for Rochdale
Feel Good Festival
Ongoing refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall and major improvement works
around the town hall square will mean a change for this summer’s Rochdale Feel
Good Festival. The main stage will move 400 metres, to Hopwood Hall College.
Indoor stages in town centre venues will remain the same, with only the main stage relocating
for 2022 while major work on The Esplanade and town hall square is completed.
Capacity for the main stage area will be reduced to around 5,000 at the St Mary’s Gate
site said councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at
Rochdale Borough Council: “After a forced two year break due to the pandemic we
wanted to make sure the festival returns this year but obviously with all the town hall
work underway we’ve had to find a new home for the main stage before it returns to
what will be a fabulous brand new events space. Hopwood Hall College have been
a supporter of this event for a number of years and I would like to thank them for
accommodating us and look forward to working with them. The site is very close to the
town centre and within a short walk of our other festival venues.”
While entry to indoor stages in venues will be free, entry to the main stage, headlined
by The Fratellis is ticketed, with £7 tickets on sale, so festival goers are being advised
to book early added Sue: “Rochdale Feel Good Festival attracts visitors from across
Greater Manchester, the north of England and beyond, so after a long wait its welcome
return is going to be popular, but with our reduced capacity we are urging fans not
to leave buying tickets until the last minute as the main stage area won’t be able to
welcome as many of you as usual.”
Julia Heap, the college’s principal and CEO said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this
summer’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival. Our Rochdale campus has extensive parking
facilities which will make a great events space for the festival that’s accessible for all.
We’re really looking forward to welcoming what looks to be a brilliant line-up of acts that
everyone can enjoy.”
On Saturday 13 August headliners The Fratellis will be joined by northern soul band
The Northern Soultrain, Manchester singer/songwriter Abbie Ozard, rock band HAiG,
multi-talented musician Aziz Ibrahim, alternative dance band ENTT, indie/folk duo
Firewoodisland, DJ Dave Sweetmore and a local battle of the bands winner, a full
programme of entertainment across indoor venues to be announced plus quality
food and drink.
Tickets (£7) for the main stage are available at
www.rochdalefeelgoodfestival.co.uk and you can book in person
at Touchstones Rochdale, Heywood Civic Centre and Middleton Arena.
The festival is funded by the council together with ticket sales and sponsorship from local
businesses. If you would like to get involved with the festival, email events@rochdale.gov.uk
For festival updates on Facebook, go to www.facebook.com/feelgoodfestival

Playdough
FUN!
Play dough is a versatile fun resource that can promote
children’s development in all areas of learning. Children of all
ages can benefit from playing with play dough – even babies
although adult supervision is essential. By manipulating the
dough with their fingers children are developing physically by
building up the muscles in their shoulders, arms, hands, and
fingers in preparation for pencil and scissor control when they
are ready. Mathematical language is naturally used whilst
children roll balls of dough.
By adding scents such as real slices of zesty lemon or cocoa
powder to playdough children are not only stimulating more
parts of their brain but having an opportunity to add to the
bank of their ever-growing vocabulary. Vocabulary lemon
could add rind, peel, zest, juicy, segments, citrus, squashy,
fresh, slice, cut, chop, and squeeze. These words are more
likely to be remembered as the experience is using more than
one sense, therefore creating a more robust memory.
Candles, cake tins and cupcake cases allow children to play
with what they know as they will inevitably make birthday
cakes and sing Happy Birthday to you or even bring the
creation to you holding it with outstretched arms eagerly
awaiting you blowing out the candles.
Providing open ended resources encourages creativity! Gone
are the indistinguishable playdough cutter shapes replaced
with regular shapes (square, circle, oblong, triangle) so
children can use these to create anything they want to. Real
photographs can be used to prompt discussion and provide
ideas for patterns and noticing details. This can also be linked
to upcoming events – photos or illustrations become activity
prompts, e.g., a photo of a tiger for the Chinese New Year
or a rabbit for Easter encourages children to make their own
animal from play dough. Children can be creative whilst
developing key artistic skills and learning to follow instructions.
Using natural resources promotes science experiments at the
playdough table as the texture can be altered by for example
rolling with a pinecone, the colour changed by adding bright
yellow dandelion heads.
The effects of squeezing and rolling playdough are very
therapeutic. It’s a fabulous activity to promote children’s
overall well-being by stimulating the touch and smell senses
to relax children as they talk, sing and play.

LOCAL NEWS
Stanney Brook Park gets new friends
It is not often you get to see projects
like this take their first steps, but on
Saturday last week, Cllr Irene Davidson
and I met with local resident Ben
Johnson. He came with a simple
question: How can we make Stanney
Brook park great? After a decent
bacon butty, a coffee and two hours of
ideas, a plan has been hatched to try
and answer that question.
A ‘Friends of’ group
The park belongs to (and is the
responsibility) of the Council, or to put it
another way, we all own it. This is the case
of most public parks across the country.
ocal people can form a notforprofit
group, usually called “Friends of Stanney
Brook Park” for example as a support
mechanism to raise funds, take action and
look after the park in conjunction with the
Council. And that’s what Ben intends to do.
“I walk through Stanney Brook park with
my young family almost every day. It
has so much potential, and I know many
other people think the same. Parks and
open spaces are the green lungs of our
community, and we need to take care of
them like they are a vital organ!” said Ben.
He is appealing for volunteers to come
forward and to give their time in the first
instance. “Most groups like this usually
have about 6-10 people steering the work,
and a broader membership for anyone
who wants to show their support. The
first steps are to write a constitution and
open a bank account, so we are a legal,
protected and official group
And from there the sky seems to be the
limit. A quick list of ideas has thrown up
a wide range of possible projects to get
stuck into.
Cllr Irene Davidson added: “There is
usually a shopping list of uick fies that
a park needs: a safe modern play area,
benches, bins and be litter free. Working
with the council on these things will be the
first to happen But then come the ideas
So far, Ben has identified the following:
1. Develop the shelter - could this be
a replaced with something more
functional that discourages anti-social
behaviour. Maybe even a bandstand?
2. Open spaces - keeping the green
sections maintained will be vital, we
can do a “deep clean” and get all the
rubbish off the grass and even re-seed
some areas if it’s required.
44
To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk
3. Wildlife - it would be excellent if
we could encourage the growth of
nature in the park and encourage an
ecosystem to develop plants so that
insects and animals could all thrive.
We would need some expert input,
but I love the idea of bat boxes, tree
planting, wildflowers, bee boes and
pond dipping
4. Water - on that note, we will need
to work with United Utilities and the
Environment Agency too, as we have
a brook running through the park (The
clue is in the title!)
5. Victorian Garden Feature - We would
love to restore the Victorian garden - It
could be part of Pennines in Bloom,
but I’d really love to get hold of some
original picture of the site?
There are endless possibilities with a
project like this, brass bands, dog shows,
kid’s days, cycle stands etc. but there are
also challenges.
“We need to work with local neighbours
too. We don’t want to demonise
teenagers here either, we’re going to
approach the youth service and some
uniform groups about structured staffing
and activities for young people.
There is a parking issue that we need
to address, but maybe we should be
encouraging a health and wellbeing and
getting more people to walk and cycle?
These are the things we need to tackle,
but we need your help.”
If you would like to get involved, please
email benjohnson08@hotmail.co.uk
Oh, you don’t know where it is?
Maybe you can email Ben then…

Update from St Thomas’, Newhey
and St James’, Milnrow
What are you giving up
for Lent then?
Every year somebody asks me this question
but often they are surprised by the answer.
In the early days of Christianity Easter was the day
when new Christians were baptized and Lent was the
period of preparation for baptism. It was forty days long
because that was the length of time Jesus spent fasting
and resisting temptation in the wilderness and it involved
teaching, prayer and fasting. Gradually it became the
custom for all Christians to eat less and pray more for the
forty days before Easter and so the season of Lent began.
By the Middle Ages Lent was an important time in the
church, special prayers had been written and the fasting
had lots of rules – did you know that rabbits qualified
as fish for the purpose of fasting? (People were allowed
to eat fish on fast days but no meat so some clever clogs
reclassified rabbit as a fish so that those who lived inland
could get some protein in their diet!). The problem with
all the rules was that it made it difficult for hardworking
people to stick to and that is something that I suspect
would have irritated Jesus who had some hard words for
the Pharisees who followed the rules to the letter while
ignoring the point of them.
In recent times Christians have become much less
organized in their Lenten discipline, some do not change
their diet at all, while others cut out the chocolate or red
wine. I have heard calls to return to the giving up of meat
for environmental reasons as well as eating more simply
and cheaply and giving the money saved to the poor.
I do not think it really matters to God what you give up for
Lent. We are blessed with such a variety of good food that
I do not believe God intended for us to starve ourselves.
The important bit, that has often got lost over time,
is the prayer.

Mothering Sunday
27th March:
Holy Communion will

I do believe God intended us to be intentional about Lent, if you give something up, do it for
a reason. It may be that the feeling of wanting something you cannot have makes you think a
little more about how fortunate you are and makes you wonder if you can help someone less
fortunate.
In the past I have challenged myself and my congregations to give up grumbling for Lent (that
was interesting) or take up an attitude of gratitude. This year I hope to give up the ‘snooze’
button on my alarm clock and make good use of the extra ten minutes!
One thing I always do in Lent is pray (you may not be surprised to hear that I do that all the
year round!). Prayer is often easier if you do it with others - our curate, Sydwell, and I pray
together in person or via Zoom if needed. It is a good time to take a look at your prayer life and
make sure it is still sustaining your faith. You could find a special Lent book or simply read your
Bible more (try reading the whole of Mark’s gospel, it’s the shortest but you get a good feel for
the story that way). The Church of England has produced an app called Live Lent which you
can pop on your phone and it gives you a short reading, a reflection and a prayer every day.
Whether you give something up or take something up or not, I hope you have
a blessed Lent.
Revd Janet Pitman
Support local police officers to help our community
Our new Greater Manchester Police
{GMP} Neighbourhood Policing Team
is in post and ready to renew their
efforts to keep our towns and villages
peaceful and safe.
They cannot, however, solve the crime and
anti-social behaviour issues which affect our
Ward without some assistance and support
from the residents they serve.
The best way in which we can assist and
support our GMP Officers is to report crimes
or suspected crimes promptly. In the era
of “intelligence led“ policing, police forces
use the number of reports coming into their
organisations to target perpetrators and
allocate resources - many residents will be
familiar with this concept from their own
work experience.
GMP have made significant efforts to make
reporting of suspicious activity and crime
easier. Gone are the days of dialling 101 and
spending 45 minutes waiting for an operator
to answer. GMP have introduced a Live Chat
facility to their website and all you need to
do is open up the GMP home page
www.gmp.police.uk. Click on the blue
circular Live Chat icon in the bottom righthand
corner of the page and start typing.
Reporting an incident can take as little as
five minutes and it will generate a response
which may include the allocation of an
Incident Number or a call from a local
Officer. Several numbers of residents have
used the facility recently and the feedback
has been very positive.

Milnrow Library Walking Group
This month the Walking Group celebrates its 6th Anniversary
and during this time we have certainly seen many changes.
We started our first walk in March 2016
with 6 walkers increasing very quickly
to a regular group of 10 - 15 walkers.
Gradually over the years we have
increased in numbers and now regularly
have between 40 and 50 walkers signing
in weekly to take part in the walks.
Initially we had one walk leader, now we have
up to 5 leaders taking out 3 walking groups.
The walks vary with each group covering a
different route each time and these walks
also vary in distance (usually between 4 and 6
miles) and degrees of difficulty and speed.
Over the 6 years, we have covered many miles
and footpaths in the Milnrow and Newhey
areas and have even ventured into Shaw, High
Crompton, Smithybridge and Hollingworth
Lake areas.
The group was initially set up to help
improve physical and mental wellbeing in
the participants and we feel that this mission
has been achieved, as well as many new
friendships formed. We are also delighted
that Cupid’s involvement has resulted in two
couples forming relationships due to meeting
up within the group.
Due to the Covid restrictions we were unable
to meet up during lockdown, but group
members kept in touch with one another via
telephone and social media or walking in pairs
in a bubble as well as occasionally meeting
other walkers during their own walks.
As the restrictions eased, the Group started to
meet in Milnrow Park keeping their distance
from one another and walking in small groups
of up to 6 people. These groups gradually
increased as the restrictions further relaxed.
I’m delighted to say that we are now back
to meeting in Milnrow Library every Monday
morning and returning there after the walks for
a well-earned cup of tea or coffee. Many thanks
go to the library staff for their help with this.
As a group we also participate in some social
activities including the annual Christmas Meal
and aim to do at least one coach trip a year to
visit another area with a walk included. Some
trips we have been on include Bolton Abbey,
Bakewell, Silverdale and Arnside, the Fylde
Coast and Garstang.
Several of the Milnrow walkers have also
joined other walking groups around the
Rochdale area and so go walking several
times a week.
New walkers are always welcome to join
us every Monday morning, meeting upstairs
in Milnrow Library ready to start walking at
10am. If you wish to join us, you will need
to register as a new walker therefore it is
advisable to arrive early in order to complete
the registration form.

IN THE GARDEN
GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE
FOR MARCH
1. Sow hardy annuals such as Cornflowers, Sweet Peas, Nigella,
Poppies and Sunflowers directly outside where you’d like them to flower this Summer.
2. Buy hardy Primroses and Primulas to add colour to patio containers. Although often sold in
mixes, pots of colours can make more impressive displays.
3. Cut Buddleia back hard to keep it at a manageable size in small gardens. This will also promote
new shoots that carry flowers at their tips.
4. Prune Hydrangeas by cutting back old flower heads to the first pair of strong buds. Cut to a third
of the oldest stems, pruning back to their bases.
5. In mild areas early potatoes can be planted later in the month,
but protect emerging growth from frost.
6. Even without a greenhouse, you can sow and grow plants on a well-lit
windowsill. Especially useful for half-hardy bedding that takes time to
reach flowering size such as Pelagonium and Morning Glory.
7. Run a hoe over the soil’s surface each week when it’s dry to cut through
any emerging weeds and prevent them from getting established.
