Hollin & Hopwood Woods Walk, Middleton

HOPWOOD HALL WALK

An easy walk of about two and a half

miles. It is mostly level with some

gentle inclines. Some parts of the route

are often wet or muddy. Boots and

appropriate clothing should be worn.

From the starting point turn right onto Waverley

Road and continue until just past the Primary

School. Take the footpath on the left which

descends to a bridge across a brook. Follow the

footpath up the hill for a few yards. Where the

path forks take the left-hand path follow the

path which runs through the edge of the wood

with a valley on your left. Continue along the

path which eventually bends sharply right. On

your left you will see another path and steps

and take this path. Take care along this part

of the route there are some steep slopes into

Hopwood Clough on your right. Eventually the

path descends into Hopwood Clough bringing

you down to the Trub Brook where it is crossed

by a footbridge. Note the cylindrical concrete

objects reinforcing the bank of the brook.

Original manufactured as tank traps during the

Second World War and put to a new use.

Do not cross the bridge. Keep to the left

following the path and through a gate into a

small car park on the old road to Hopwood

Hall. Turn left and then almost immediately right

on to the College driveway. Continue down to

a bridge which crosses Trub Brook and then

left onto a trackway which runs in front of the

sports pavilion.

After a short distance the trackway bends left,

continue to follow the trackway which becomes

Oaken Bank Road. After about 400 yards you

will be able to see Hopwood Hall on your left.
