Stage change for Rochdale

Feel Good Festival

Ongoing refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall and major improvement works

around the town hall square will mean a change for this summer’s Rochdale Feel

Good Festival. The main stage will move 400 metres, to Hopwood Hall College.

Indoor stages in town centre venues will remain the same, with only the main stage relocating

for 2022 while major work on The Esplanade and town hall square is completed.

Capacity for the main stage area will be reduced to around 5,000 at the St Mary’s Gate

site said councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at

Rochdale Borough Council: “After a forced two year break due to the pandemic we

wanted to make sure the festival returns this year but obviously with all the town hall

work underway we’ve had to find a new home for the main stage before it returns to

what will be a fabulous brand new events space. Hopwood Hall College have been

a supporter of this event for a number of years and I would like to thank them for

accommodating us and look forward to working with them. The site is very close to the

town centre and within a short walk of our other festival venues.”

While entry to indoor stages in venues will be free, entry to the main stage, headlined

by The Fratellis is ticketed, with £7 tickets on sale, so festival goers are being advised

to book early added Sue: “Rochdale Feel Good Festival attracts visitors from across

Greater Manchester, the north of England and beyond, so after a long wait its welcome

return is going to be popular, but with our reduced capacity we are urging fans not

to leave buying tickets until the last minute as the main stage area won’t be able to

welcome as many of you as usual.”

Julia Heap, the college’s principal and CEO said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this

summer’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival. Our Rochdale campus has extensive parking

facilities which will make a great events space for the festival that’s accessible for all.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming what looks to be a brilliant line-up of acts that

everyone can enjoy.”

On Saturday 13 August headliners The Fratellis will be joined by northern soul band

The Northern Soultrain, Manchester singer/songwriter Abbie Ozard, rock band HAiG,

multi-talented musician Aziz Ibrahim, alternative dance band ENTT, indie/folk duo

Firewoodisland, DJ Dave Sweetmore and a local battle of the bands winner, a full

programme of entertainment across indoor venues to be announced plus quality

food and drink.

Tickets (£7) for the main stage are available at

www.rochdalefeelgoodfestival.co.uk and you can book in person

at Touchstones Rochdale, Heywood Civic Centre and Middleton Arena.

The festival is funded by the council together with ticket sales and sponsorship from local

businesses. If you would like to get involved with the festival, email events@rochdale.gov.uk

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Andy P Collins Wealth Management Limited

March already!

Where did the time go?

Inflation – Rising energy bills –

Stock markets more volatile – US

Fed tightening the money supply

and raising interest rates – Bank

of England likewise – China still

easing the money supply – Potential conflict in Europe.

One thing is certain, there will always be change.

So how do you decide where to invest

for value, and how to time the market.

I’m a firm believer that it’s NOT – TIMING the market

– but time IN the market.

There’s little value in sitting in cash alone, interest

rates, provide little or no return and much less than

inflation, thereby guaranteeing a value loss. Fixed

interest stocks, well they correlate to interest rate

movements, so a rise in interest rates generally sees a

fall in capital values. A well-structured, geographically

diverse portfolio of quality stocks that can withstand

economic market movements and produce dividends,

generally sees us through difficult times. Of course,

funds should always be held on deposit too, a

minimum of two years income as a guide, this allows

access to funds without having to disturb a portfolio or

take funds when it might not be the best time.

The correct weighting is specific to each individual, or

couple, and when we discuss your attitude to risk, the

balance can be decided. We will meet regularly to rebalance

a portfolio because “Things change”, but the

overall concept will be clear with a strategy to achieve

an outcome.

I help clients understand how important the reason

their money is important to them personally, and

repeatedly come back to that purpose as a centre for

the advice. This transforms the relationship, as we

understand the central reason that provides the goal.

Planning is about Understanding and Trust. When we

have clarity, the products are merely vehicles to get to

the goal. That’s why my clients rarely have the same

solutions, as they are all different, at different life

stages and hold different views and comfort zones –

we work a bespoke plan out together – Just ASK!

I help individuals, business owners and

Directors make better financial decisions

I can’t change the events that shape your future,

however, I can ensure that you’re prepared with a

bespoke plan, and your resources are employed

focused on desired Goals.

As part of my understanding you as an individual or a

business, I review existing plans to check if they are

fit for purpose, and your current wealth is protected,

should any changes not be one you had planned.

So, if you don’t have a plan or just wish to check that

what you have in place is working with you towards

your Goal, then – Just ASK!

Andy is widely regarded as a Financial Services

business leader with a demonstrated history of

success at board level. His thirty plus years of

Financial services experience has enabled him to

draw on a wealth of knowledge and skills.

During that time, he has held Head of sales, Director

and Senior management roles with some of the

UK’s leading institutions.

I am locally based and offer planning in

the following areas:

• Preparing for retirement and in-retirement advice

• Investment planning

• Pension planning

• Protection for you and your family

• Inheritance tax and Inter-generational planning

• Investment planning for children/grandchildren

• Protection for self-employed, company directors

and key people

• Aspects of tax efficient business exit strategies.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place

will be directly linked to the performance of the funds

you select and the value can therefore go down as

well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Equities do not provide the security of capital which

is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building

society.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from

taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax

relief is dependent on individual circumstances.

Hollin & Hopwood Woods Walk, Middleton

HOPWOOD HALL WALK

An easy walk of about two and a half

miles. It is mostly level with some

gentle inclines. Some parts of the route

are often wet or muddy. Boots and

appropriate clothing should be worn.

From the starting point turn right onto Waverley

Road and continue until just past the Primary

School. Take the footpath on the left which

descends to a bridge across a brook. Follow the

footpath up the hill for a few yards. Where the

path forks take the left-hand path follow the

path which runs through the edge of the wood

with a valley on your left. Continue along the

path which eventually bends sharply right. On

your left you will see another path and steps

and take this path. Take care along this part

of the route there are some steep slopes into

Hopwood Clough on your right. Eventually the

path descends into Hopwood Clough bringing

you down to the Trub Brook where it is crossed

by a footbridge. Note the cylindrical concrete

objects reinforcing the bank of the brook.

Original manufactured as tank traps during the

Second World War and put to a new use.

Do not cross the bridge. Keep to the left

following the path and through a gate into a

small car park on the old road to Hopwood

Hall. Turn left and then almost immediately right

on to the College driveway. Continue down to

a bridge which crosses Trub Brook and then

left onto a trackway which runs in front of the

sports pavilion.

After a short distance the trackway bends left,

continue to follow the trackway which becomes

Oaken Bank Road. After about 400 yards you

will be able to see Hopwood Hall on your left.

The earliest references to the Hopwood Family

date to the 13th Century. The hall, originally

a timber building, was built around this time

and was fortified by a moat. The building has

undergone many alterations since then. After 30

years of neglect, a descendant of the Hopwood

family is now spearheading the project to rescue

the Hall with the intention of restoring it and

opening it up as an arts and cultural venue for

the community of Middleton to enjoy.

Unfortunately, at present, this is the closest view

you can get of the Hall. The Hall is encircled

by the College grounds and despite a promise

of a separate access route the College has

exhibited reluctance to resolve this. A petition

on Change.org hopes to bring pressure for

a timely resolution (Google: “Change.org

Hopwood Hall”). Without access the project

is in jeopardy. It would be a tragedy if this

wonderful building was needlessly lost. It is

one of only a very few buildings of medieval

origin still standing in the area.

From here continue along Oaken Bank Road for

about 100 yards to where a path leads off to the

left marked by white posts on either side of the

path. Take this path which rises to the highest

point on the route at about 480 feet. The path

then descends to a trackway where you turn left.

Continue following the track downhill until you

reach a surfaced cycle track. Turn left following

the cycle track for about 380 yards where a path

leads off to the right. Turn right and follow the

path downhill until it ends at a T-junction. This is

the path that you followed on the outward part of

the walk. Turn right and retrace the route back to

the start point of the walk.

Our Group

This walking group meet at 10.25am

on Mondays outside the Hollin Estate

Management Board Office, Nowell Road,

Middleton. New walkers are always

welcome. They are friendly walks, free to

attend and lead by trained walk leaders

with a good knowledge of Hopwood and

the surrounding area. The walks last

about 1 hour.

For further information on this and other

walking groups please contact Danny

Smith our walk co-ordinator at Living Well

From The Archives

THE DEARNLEY OR BIRCH HILL WORKHOUSE

As early as 1598 the government

decreed that parishes throughout

England had to oversee their own

poor and provide parish houses

for those who could not support

themselves and their families

through work.

Poor relief in the years following, further

reinforced the responsibility of the parish

through its townships for the poor by

providing shelter and employment.

However, this national arrangement

became too expensive, costing £2 million

pounds to the Exchequer in 1784 but

£7 million pounds by 1832. Something

had to change and the New Poor Law

of 1834 shifted onus and responsibility

by recommending that those unable to

survive through employment should go to

the workhouse and do menial work there,

the place being administered by local

workhouse unions. Although shelter, basic

food and employment would be found in

the workhouse, they became unpopular as

conditions in them was far from pleasant.

However, by 1850 most towns in Britain

had workhouses.

Rochdale was no exception, its Poor Law

Union forming in 1837 in the face of much

delaying opposition from local ratepayers

led by Alderman Thomas Livsey who called

for a boycott of the election of workhouse

Guardians on the grounds that workhouses

were becoming ‘prisons for the poor’

and where inmates were divided by age

Delaying tactics worked only temporarily

however, so the protesters decided to put

up their own candidates for Guardians who,

once elected would refuse to attend crucial

Board meetings. The fight continued as

people in the town were fiercely opposed to

the Poor Law Amendment Act, Rochdale’s

first MP, John Fenton, losing his seat after

he voted in favour of the law. However,

after many legal threats and further delays

the Poor Law Union Act was implemented

in the town and workhouses for some

time afterwards catered (through periods

of boom and bust in the textile industries)

for many hundreds of people so that by

the mid-19th century under the Poor Law,

Rochdale had workhouses in Spotland

on Primrose Street (100 places), Marland

off Marland Old Road (50, later 300)

Hollingworth on Syke Lane (58),

Calf Hey near Wardle Fold (30) and at

Wardleworth (24).

Over the years and due to gradual

overcrowding and very poor conditions

in the workhouses, the local Poor Law

Guardians looked to find an alternative

to the Spotland, Hollingworth and

Wardleworth workhouses. The one at

Spotland in particular was in such a parlous

state structurally that part of it collapsed

possibly due to coal mine subsidence under

its foundations. Even though it was patched

up temporarily it stayed open for a number

of years during the late 1860’s, ‘lunatics

and imbeciles’ according to Spotland

Township minutes, ‘being kept in that

part of the building which had given way.’

and gender.

34

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Furthermore, the Spotland workhouse had

been recently inspected and found wanting

in a number of other ways, being primarily

criticised for :

• Two men sharing a bed at the workhouse

(a common criticism)

• The lack of proper workhouse dress

being provided, inmates wearing their

own clothes, allowing smoking in both

the men’s and the women’s sections

(another common complaint)

• Inadequate judgement as to the

prevalence of infectious disease

• The use of the cellar as a mortuary

• The administering of medicines by

illiterate pauper inmates.

So, in 1871, in the face of overcrowding in

the workhouses of the town, the Rochdale

Poor Law Union proposed the building of

a giant workhouse and to that end bought

24 acres of land on the slopes of Birch Hill

and Starring Hill for £2500. The Dearnley

or Birch Hill workhouse at the end of

Union Road, complete with tower and clock

face that can be seen from miles around

was designed by George Woodhouse and

Edward Potts to accommodate 632 of the

poor although, at its capacity, it held 847

alongside 29 ‘officers’.

Following its use as a workhouse, the

Birch Hill buildings were used as a military

hospital in the Great War with tents erected

in the grounds and from 1930 the site

was passed to Rochdale County Borough

with the Poor Law Institution being run

by the Public Assistance Committee and

the Hospital being run by the Health

Committee. In 1948 Birch Hill became

an important part of the National Health

Service’s provision for the town until its

closure in 2013. Whilst most recently

buildings on the site form part of Birch

Hill Clock Tower apartments, one wonders

whether those living there are aware of the

suffering and succour that has taken place

on that hill.

Served by a tramway on Halifax Road

it eventually opened its doors to the

poor in December of 1877, the full cost

of the building being £85,000. The

opening ceremony was led by the Mayor

of Rochdale, Alderman T Schofield,

preceded by a tour of the workhouse for

the seventy guests, speeches by dignitaries

and a performance by the Orpheus Glee

Club. By the turn of the 20th century the

building was extended to incorporate a

172-bed infirmary and a central healthcare

administration block.
