Stage change for Rochdale

Feel Good Festival

Ongoing refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall and major improvement works

around the town hall square will mean a change for this summer’s Rochdale Feel

Good Festival. The main stage will move 400 metres, to Hopwood Hall College.

Indoor stages in town centre venues will remain the same, with only the main stage relocating

for 2022 while major work on The Esplanade and town hall square is completed.

Capacity for the main stage area will be reduced to around 5,000 at the St Mary’s Gate

site said councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at

Rochdale Borough Council: “After a forced two year break due to the pandemic we

wanted to make sure the festival returns this year but obviously with all the town hall

work underway we’ve had to find a new home for the main stage before it returns to

what will be a fabulous brand new events space. Hopwood Hall College have been

a supporter of this event for a number of years and I would like to thank them for

accommodating us and look forward to working with them. The site is very close to the

town centre and within a short walk of our other festival venues.”

While entry to indoor stages in venues will be free, entry to the main stage, headlined

by The Fratellis is ticketed, with £7 tickets on sale, so festival goers are being advised

to book early added Sue: “Rochdale Feel Good Festival attracts visitors from across

Greater Manchester, the north of England and beyond, so after a long wait its welcome

return is going to be popular, but with our reduced capacity we are urging fans not

to leave buying tickets until the last minute as the main stage area won’t be able to

welcome as many of you as usual.”

Julia Heap, the college’s principal and CEO said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this

summer’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival. Our Rochdale campus has extensive parking

facilities which will make a great events space for the festival that’s accessible for all.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming what looks to be a brilliant line-up of acts that

everyone can enjoy.”

On Saturday 13 August headliners The Fratellis will be joined by northern soul band

The Northern Soultrain, Manchester singer/songwriter Abbie Ozard, rock band HAiG,

multi-talented musician Aziz Ibrahim, alternative dance band ENTT, indie/folk duo

Firewoodisland, DJ Dave Sweetmore and a local battle of the bands winner, a full

programme of entertainment across indoor venues to be announced plus quality

food and drink.

Tickets (£7) for the main stage are available at

at Touchstones Rochdale, Heywood Civic Centre and Middleton Arena.

The festival is funded by the council together with ticket sales and sponsorship from local

Friends of Syke

and Cronkeyshaw

Plenty of projects in the

pipeline for Friends Group

A new chair and vice chair have been elected to Friends of Syke

and Cronkeyshaw (FOSAC).

Richard Lord will take the role of chair and Pam Hogkinson is the new vice chair

following Tricia Ayrton and Councillor Sean O’Neill stepping down. Both will still be

involved in the Friends group.

Richard said: “I want to pay tribute to both Tricia and Sean for helping establish

the group and driving it forward in very difficult times.

“I am really looking to working with everyone in the group to deliver some brilliant

projects to improve our beautiful green spaces. The last two years have been

really tough for everyone so we hope we can bring a little joy. We are always

looking for new members and always open to new ideas for projects.”

Projects in the pipeline include:

• Establishing a herb garden in the spiral (formerly a sand pit) on Syke Common

• Plans have been created to address issues with the Historic Garden

at the south end of Syke Pond

• A number of whips have been obtained for planting around Syke

and Croneyshaw.

Ideas for projects are gathered from our participants and many more ideas

have already been captured. The full list of projects and ideas can be viewed on

the Facebook page.

All are welcome to attend FOSAC meetings and get involved. They usually take

place at Syke Community Base . Meeting times are posted on our Facebook

page (search for Friends of Syke and Cronkeyshaw) and on notices boards.

Rag ‘n’ Bone man

a recycled story

Rag ‘n’ Bone Man. The soulful baritone

singer, reputedly named after the characters

in the 70s sitcom ‘Steptoe and Son.’

“Rag Bone!” “Rag Bone!”

Was a familiar sound that echoed around the

streets of Rochdale in the 50s, 60s and early

70s, the scrap and rag man with the horse

and cart, trundling around our Town informing

residents of his presence.

A balloon or donkey stone, was given in return

for your discarded junk and scrap.

These days, of course, recycling is a more

sophisticated affair, carried out mainly by the

Council’s Environmental Management Teams.

Four different coloured bins are collected, in turn,

with glass/tins, paper, food waste and general

refuse are shifted and recycled every week.

A recent announcement has been made that,

from April, bulkier items will be removed free of

charge, with a maximum of two occasions per

household per year and as the latest figures

show, a marked increase in the collection of paper and cardboard,

it must be down to all those online purchases made during lockdown,

this service is working rather well.

And now with climate change being top of everyone’s agenda, this

additional recycling ensures that every household can help towards

mitigating the effects of change to our weather patterns by reducing

our personal carbon footprint.

However, with the numbers indicating just short of 60% of folk engaging

in recycling, we’ve a fair way to go but as the Rag ‘n’ Bone man sang

“We are only Human after all!”

the time for getting out into the fresh

air and having a good walk. The Syke

walking group starts from the Syke

Chapel on a Friday mornings.

This walk takes us to the picturesque Cowm

reservoir. It is about 6 miles and involves some

steep climbs.

Prior to the construction of the reservoir there

had been 26 houses and farms, a cotton mill

and stone polishing mill in the Cowm valley.

Not all of them were drowned when the valley

was flooded but those that remained were

gradually abandoned with the last residents

leaving in 1950. The ruins of Cowclough a

hamlet on the west side of the reservoir can

still be seen.

Construction of the reservoir started in 1868

and was completed in 1877. It was built to

supply drinking water to Rochdale but in 1975

became polluted and is now utilised by a water

ski centre. Pathways have been laid and it is

now possible to make a complete circuit of the

reservoir.

From Syke Chapel head northwards along

Dewhirst Road over the cattle grid and

continue on this road passing , Moorland

Home on your right and Lobden golf course

on your left. At the golf course take the left

turn and follow the road downhill passing Saint

Bartholomew’s church and Whitworth Square.

Bearing right follow Whitworth Rake onto

Taylor Street and then onto Church Street

to Market Street. Cross Market street to

Hall street. keep on Hall street passing St

Bartholomew’s primary school and bear right

at Hall Fold onto Cock Hall lane. After about

200 yards take a right turn on to Burnside and

the public footpath which runs by the side of

Whitworth Community High School.

Turn left and follow the path watching your

footing as you walk and eventually arriving in

Hall Fold. Continue downhill keeping to the

left onto Hall street and retrace your steps

to Market street, Church street, Taylor street,

Whitworth Rake, Whitworth Square, Dewhirst

Road and back to Syke Chapel.

Continue on this path crossing Tong End

Brook by the wooden bridge. Where the

footpath divides take the path to the left

and arrive on New Way. Follow the road until

you reach Tong End. Turn left along the road

which becomes Back Cowm Lane and leads

you to Cowm reservoir. Take a left turn at the

reservoir passing the water ski centre and

continue along the reservoir embankment to

its end. Bearing right follow the path alongside

the reservoir for about 200 yards and then go

through the gate on the left. The path climbs

very steeply and bears left up the hill side from

which you get good views of Cowm and Brown

Wardle. At the top you will emerge on to Cow

Clough Rake an old cart road which in the

19th century carried wagons laden with stone

from the quarries.
