Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: MudHen Brewing Co. on Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood. 

It’s Wildwood’s only brewery and from the same team behind 

Poppi’s and Dogtooth. 

The vibe: It was a busy night and we sat at a high-top table near the 

back bar. MudHen’s layout is great because there really isn’t a bad spot 

to sit. We enjoyed live music from Indelible Groove and were still in a 

great spot to people-watch — everyone’s favorite pastime whether you 

choose to admit it or not. More than anything, it’s so nice to see people 

out enjoying life after the past two years of uncertainty. We may not be 

entirely back to normal, but it seems we are getting closer. 

The server: Anastasiia was lovely and very knowledgeable of the 

menu. Not surprising for someone who loves where they work as much 

as she does. “I came here one night as a customer and just wanted to 

stay here all day,” she says. “I’ve worked here about six months and it’s 

the best job — the food is delicious.” Anastasiia named a few of her 

favorites, including the seafood curry, Hippie Chick salad and burrata 

beet salad. She could have probably gone on all night — she was a 

delight to chat with and nice to have a server that truly loves their job. 

The beers: We were in a beer-drinking mood, so Dan sipped a Captain 

Doug’s Porter while Nicole went for the Holly Beach Wheat. Turned 

out to be the only drinks we had because we ate so much food, we were 

full before we had the chance of ordering another round. 

The food: MudHen is Dan’s favorite restaurant and Nicole is there 

mainly for the pretzel sticks, but we went all out. We started with pretzels 

and Dan enjoyed the BBQ meat lover mac and cheese — which 

he finished by the way — and Nicole had a chicken Caesar salad. We 

decided to split a piece of cheesecake and it was worth every bite. 

The takeaway: MudHen is a great spot, year-round. They have outside 

seating and a great live music schedule on their website. Head over 

for lunch or dinner and grab dessert if you have room. Dan made it clear 

that even after an entire skillet of mac and cheese, it’s possible.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

pretty chill week here at Undertow 

Central in beautiful, downtown Erma, 

which is great for my mental and physical 

well-being, but terrible for writing 

columns about the crazy shenanigans 

and kooky goings-on you got involved in all 

week. To wit, here’s a list of all the good songs I 

heard on 101.5 WCFA while out on delivery this 

week (okay, not every song, but quite a few)... 

“No Guilt” by The Waitresses. This is the 

third Waitresses song I’ve ever heard after “I 

Know What Boys Like” and “Christmas 

Wrapping” and you’re a damn dirty liar if you say 

otherwise. “Wildwood Pier” by The Toms. It’s 

about Wildwood which we live real close to and 

it’s actually a pretty catchy song! “Road to Reno” 

by Thomas Dolby is so great I’m mad at the 52 

years I didn’t know it. “Heart” by Rockpile, one 

of those 70s English New Wave super-groups 

with Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. It’s a song 

you’ve probably never heard before but won’t 

believe you haven’t heard 1,000 times. You’ll 

know what I mean when you hear it. And, perhaps 

the best of the bunch, “Ca Plane Pour Moi” 

by Plastic Bertrand. No idea what it’s about 

because I don’t speak French, I just know it 

punches me in the face and I like it. 

WCFA Grand Poobah David Cassidy swears 

it’s just a complete coincidence that, ever since I 

started critiquing the station in these pages, they 

just mysteriously started playing more R.E.M. 

and Squeeze. Well, I’ll tell ya, if that’s so, it’s the 

most coincidence-y coincidence that ever coincidence-d. 

(Paid writer.) 

I promised myself (and, therefore, you) that I 

wouldn’t mention R.E.M. this week, but I started 

watching this funny show, Loudermilk (Amazon 

Prime). The lead character is an alcoholic, former 

music critic who called their album Monster 

an abomination then perfectly articulated why. 

I agree. Monster, especially after their masterpieces, 

Out of Time and Automatic for the People, 

was so bad I stopped buying R.E.M. albums for 

10 years, then bought one, Up, their other worst 

album, and stopped until after they disbanded. 

I’ve since repented, but Monster still sucks. 

Good Neighbor of the Week: We were 

recently invited to join the NextDoor app (it’s 

like Facebook, but specific to your neighborhood 

and nobody cares how you vote) so I posted that 

we’re holding out hope of finding our lost little 

kitten, Levi (I know, it’s too sad…), and Maria 

Kaplan gave me an animal trap then regaled 

me with tales of how her and her father spending 

years capturing and spaying strays and just 

seemed like a seriously nice person that now 

I want to find my cat just for her, like how you 

want to run through a brick wall for the coach 

that gives you that great halftime speech.

school (always a bummer, though there’s now

Honey, I’m Homeless are a local 

band fronted by singer-songwriter 

Brandon Smith and employ my 

favorite drummer, Al Olivero. Their 

new album, Remission: Impossible, 

is now available for purchase. 

Brandon’s songwriting is heavily 

influenced by 90s 3-chord power-pop 

outfits like Blink 182, and 

elder statesman like Elvis Costello, 

and, shockingly, I don’t hate most 

of them, which is the highest honor 

I can give. (I kid.) The album features 

a few local guest artists, none 

of whom are me, which is fine. I 

guess. But does feature two of my 

favorites, Jon Katity and Nancy 

Malcun. So there’s that. You can 

actually, tangibly support local 

music by buying and downloading 

Remission: Impossible. Like, right 

now. 

Only my sons and I could 

spend $20 at Rita’s on free water 

ice day. 

I was pretty nervous entering 

2022, but as the first quarter 

recedes, I’m able to breathe a little 

easier. Oh, I still think it’s entirely 

possible that gas and food shortages 

and nuclear holocaust thrust 

into a Road Warrior scenario, I just 

mean I feel pretty good about my 

gigs. Pairing with four new musical 

partners was daunting, to say the 

least, but now that we’ve all played 

together, I can exhale. Each show 

has its own little personality. Jerry 

Kolber and I are your classic acoustic 

duo, many standards peppered 

with a heavy dose of modern alternative. 

Dave Hughes brings the 

vibes with his electric guitar and 

assortment of 70s classics, though 

he is by far the youngest of this new 

group. Charlie Wigo is your fun 

uncle who went to Woodstock and 

never returned. Michael Stevens 

is the smooth ivory-tickler who 

unleashes my inner Billy Joel. I 

couldn’t be happier. And yes, I’ve 

made all of them learn at least one 

Dawes song. 

A company for whom I recently 

made a few commercials will soon 

be paying me a not-inconsequential-yet-not 

life-altering amount of 

money to keep me from making 

commercials for similar companies 

in the tri-state area. You see? I’m 

such a good actor people are paying 

me to NOT act. It’s flattering. Or 

insulting. Either way, cha-CHING! 

Amirite? 

I sat my kids down to have the 

sex talk. They really taught me a lot. 

If you love a good, unleashed 

Jason Bateman curse-a-thon like 

I do, I give you the unheralded 

Bad Words. Bateman plays, well, 

Bateman, as he competes against 

middle school kids in a spelling 

bee and you can probably guess 

the rest. Bateman is Oscar-worthy. 

Seriously. No one says “pal” with 

such dripping, acidic condescension. 

Deep Water, starring then-couple 

Ben Affleck and Ana DeArmas, 

is exactly what you’d expect from 

80’s stylish-sleaze auteur Adrian 

Lyne. Equal parts 9 ½ Weeks, Fatal 

Attraction and Unfaithful. That’s not 

to say it’s bad. In fact, it’s quite 

good. Just try not to sprain your 

eyeballs as you occasionally roll 

them. Bonus points for casting the 

great Tracey Letts. 

Drive My Car is more an investment 

than a movie, but if you can 

commit three hours to this lovely 

little Japanese film I think you’ll 

find the payoff worth it. Nothing 

Earth-shattering happens here, 

just people being people sorting 

out their stuff. 

Lastly this week, a clarification: 

Most weekends, on either 

Friday or Saturday night, you’ll 

find me singing at Exit Zero in a 

black T-shirt with a red star emblazoned 

on the chest. It’s probably my 

favorite T-shirt. It fits me well and I 

don’t feel fat in it. We all have one of 

those, right? Anyway, this T-shirt 

is meant to convey my affection 

for the Marvel Comics character 

Winter Soldier, not for Russia. I 

am anti-Russia. Check that: I am 

pro-Russian, I am anti-Putin.

The Theater Column

One step forward, two steps back. 

That’s the plight of those living 

under hatred and oppression. In 

Spring 1919, at a family cabin in 

South Carolina, this drama plays out 

as it had for centuries before. John comes 

home from World War I as a decorated war 

hero. What he doesn’t know is that six months 

prior, his father was lynched by a white mob. 

Millie, John’s sister, hadn’t the heart to tell 

him and he’s surprising them by coming home 

early. What will happen when he finds out? 

East Lynne Theater Company is presenting 

an online reading of the one-act play 

Aftermath by Mary P. Burrill for free, thanks 

to The New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s “Stages 

Festival.” Aftermath was published in April 1919 

and produced by the Krigwa Players in The 

Little Theater Competition alongside plays by 

Eugene O’Neill and Susan Glaspell in 1928. It’s 

amazing to think that over 100 years after the 

play was written, lynching became a federal 

hate crime only two weeks ago. 

The story is simple and courageous — 

and is brilliantly performed. ELTC’s artistic 

director Gayle Stahlhuth says, “I’m searching 

for another production for this ensemble. 

They are that good.” The cast is all new to 

ELTC. Marie Louise Guinier, Emerald Rose 

Sullivan, and Anthony Goss have performed 

at Metropolitan Playhouse in NYC, among 

others. Guinier was in the film Strive with 

Danny Glover, and Sullivan appeared in FBI: 

Most Wanted and Gotham. Goss is currently per- 

forming Off-Broadway in Gong Lum’s Legacy. 

Brandon Dion Gregory’s credits include 

Homeland and Resurrection. Alexa Kent was in 

RWS Entertainment’s I Love Christmas Movies. 

Leo Ebanks performed in the musicals Spring 

Awakening and Shakespeare’s As You Like It. 

The premiere on April 6 is timely, according 

to Stahlhuth, who says, “It’s the anniversary 

of the U.S. entry into World War l. When 

performances end on April 9, that’s the day 

Lee surrendered to Grant in 1865.” Mary P. 

Burrill was not only a playwright, educator, 

and activist, but the first Black graduate of 

Emerson College. Her partner of 25 years, 

Lucy Diggs Slowe, was appointed the first 

Dean of Women at Howard University. The 

Slowe-Burrill house in Washington D.C. was 

listed on the National Register of Historic 

Places in 2020 for “its significance to African 

American and LGBT history.” 

The reading premieres on April 6 at 8pm 

and runs through April 9 on ELTC’s YouTube

America, these sturdy brick-breasted birds 

are likely known to every resident, even those 

living in the Arctic where not a sizable willow 

thicket supports a pair. 

Take a minute to appreciate the miracle 

that is a robin. With so many North American 

bird species dwindling in number, this handsome 

and vocal neighbor is thriving in this 

world and has since European colonists felled 

the forests and began landscaping with wellspaced 

shrubs, trees and lots of lawn. Before 

Europeans, robins lived in forest clearings, 

burned forest, tundra and treeline. We opened 

the door to robin expansion. 

The birds’ adobe nests are snuggled in the 

lower half of a tree on some horizontal branch. 

But drainpipes, outdoor porch counters and 

unoccupied buildings are readily adopted by 

prospecting parents who both engage in nest 

construction. The grass foundation is welded 

together with worm castings and the softball-sized 

nests are roomy enough to accommodate 

growing chicks until they can fly. 

And what child has not been brought to 

stir a robin’s eggs with an exploring finger, 

marveling at their color and savoring their 

life-encasing warmth. 

Robins also rank among the most vocal 

of birds, with males beginning their caroled 

song at first light, even at night where ambient 

light creates a false eternal dawn. Robins 

also make noise whenever your prowling 

tabby encroaches upon the bird’s nest site. 

Robin chicks have spotted breasts like 

many thrushes including the chicks of other 

Turdus thrushes which include the Claycolored 

Robin, a subtropical bird of mixed 

habitats that breeds from the Rio Grande 

Valley to Venezuela and Columbia. 

So, here’s to the herald of Spring setting 

up shop in a suburban yard where, for the next 

few weeks, they will deprive your prowling 

tabby of all dignity. Keep your cat indoors and 

keep peace in the neighborhood.

Wine experts once had a snobbish 

reputation — diners feared being 

judged by the sommelier for a 

lack of knowledge. To “properly” 

enjoy wine, it seemed, you must 

“See, Swirl, Sniff and Sip” like an expert, 

and the sommelier was seen as an obstacle 

instead of an ally. Today’s vintners are more 

focused on the last “S” — Savor. Forget a 

wine’s reputation — if you like it, it’s good. 

They’ll still advise you to learn about the beverage 

they love, but only so that you’ll enjoy 

your purchases. Once you know what you like, 

you can better experiment and find others. 

You’re too grown up to play with your 

food, but you can play with your wine. Have 

some fun with food pairing — the rules say 

champagne goes with caviar, but it also complements 

fried chicken, or McDonald’s French 

fries. Open a Riesling with your Chinese food, 

or with a tuna sandwich. Don’t be shy while 

you’re shopping — take a sip when vendors 

offer samples and ask questions. Shop for 

wine on a slow day and ask the merchant for 

recommendations. Host a wine tasting for 

friends. Line up five or six wines from lightest 

in color to darkest, put out some cheese and 

crackers and ask your friends to describe the 

wine using silly prompts. Instead of asking 

for complicated descriptions from nature, ask, 

“What celebrity would this wine date?” or 

“What music does this wine dance to?” 

Break the wine rules — serve wine in a 

pretty teacup, add ice, or enjoy it in a cock- 

tail. A wine spritzer — four ounces of wine 

with two ounces of club soda — is the star of 

summer barbecues. Or follow the example of 

Spanish teens with a Rioja Libre — a 50/50 

mixture of red wine and cola served over ice. 

Get some expert advice about wines that 

may soon be your favorite. Visit a local winery 

for a tour and tasting — to be safe, take the 

trolley, bring a designated driver, or make 

use of the “dump” bucket. Join Cape May 

Winery’s Educational Wine Tasting. An expert 

will guide you through the wine-making process, 

“talking about Cape May’s unique terroir 

and providing insightful tips on how to taste.”

contributing financially to the house even 

though he is working full-time. He blames 

me because I didn’t defend him, but I think my 

husband is right. Still, I miss my son. Am I to

What you are, the Answer Lady suspects, 

is an enabler. Why else would your son behave 

like that? There may be tensions with him and 

his stepfather, but why drag you into that?

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

Unless he feels you should have spoken to him. 

We suggest you text and call your son and offer 

to meet him at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House for 

a stack of chocolate chip pancakes and talk it 

out. He may not be ready to hear what you have 

to say, but the point of parenting is to prepare 

children for an independent adulthood. The 

goal should not be to encourage him to move 

back home, but to encourage him to tell you 

what the real problem is. 

Dear Answer Lady 

I have been dating a woman I really like for 

three months. The problem is that I work in an 

office with other women. I am not interested in 

them romantically or we would already been 

dating. I do talk about them, however, because 

I like to share my workday with my girlfriend, 

and they are part of that. She gets defensive 

and I get punished. Right after I mention one 

of them, she has a headache, remembers she’s 

having dinner with her mother, or gives me 

the silent treatment. I don’t really know how 

to handle this. Quit my job? What? — Puzzled 

Dear Puzzled 

Find another girlfriend. You can try 

talking to her, but the Answer Lady thinks 

these are red flags and you better take heed. 

If you are feeling generous, turn the tables 

on her. Have a headache. Make a date with 

your mother. Better yet, have a night out with 

your colleagues at the Brown Room. This is 

only going to get worse. She has probably had 

betrayals in her past that caused trust issues, 

but you are on the wrong end of that fight.

boy who came to the shelter when his owners 

could no longer care for him. He has a lot of 

energy and needs gentle training and handling. 

His leash skills are improving and at this 

point in his training, should be the only pet in 

the home. Zeus will be a wonderful companion 

for an active family with breed experience. 

NOAH is a friendly, nine-year-old boy who 

came to the shelter when his family lost their 

home. He lived with children, and he is comfortable 

with other dogs and cats. Noah loves 

walks and his leash skills are improving. He 

is also crate trained and loves to go for rides 

in the car. Noah loves human interaction and 

would make a wonderful companion. 

GEM is a senior girl who came to the shelter 

when she was abandoned. She is a loving dog 

who loves human interaction. Gem has excellent 

leash manners, loves long walks and playing 

in the yard. She is calm around other dogs 

and needs a slow introduction to cats. Gem is 

also good with children and would make an 

ideal pet for a family that will love her energy.

led to an eye infection that cause permanent 

damage o his cornea. Thankfully, he has been

new people, but if you give him a chance, he'll
