Happy Hopping

The Easter Bunny is hopping all through Cape May over the next week and made one of his first stops at The

Pier House for Brunch with the Bunny on Sunday, April 10. Matt, Matthew and Lauren Pietluck were excited

to grab a few shots before enjoying their meals. More photos from brunch inside. Aleksey Moryakov

Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.

The place: Sapore Italiano on the corner of Congress Street and

Broadway. The fine-dining restaurant is BYOB with a delicious selection

of homemade Italian cuisine.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

As summer approaches, I’m torn as

to whether I should take advantage

of this crazy real estate market.

On the one hand, I can sell my

house for twice what I paid for it 20

years ago. On the other, I’d have to commute

from Nebraska because that’s where the only

non-AirBnBs are available for regular people

to live in. Look, I don’t begrudge anybody making

a buck, but it would be nice if some of the

people living in Cape May lived in Cape May.

Kismet of the Week: I mentioned guitar

virtuoso Eddie Dobbs last week and received

a nice “Thank you.” (Yes, I said something

nice about someone. Sue me.) First time I’ve

heard from Ed in probably… five years? Then,

THE NEXT DAY, who comes waltzing into the

North Cape May Acme while I’m bagging my

groceries but the aforementioned Mr. Dobbs!

(This is a half-truth. It was my son Henry bagging

the groceries, getting a jump on his future

career. SICK BURN.) It was a typical Ed Dobbs

exchange; few words exchanged, it got a little

weird and he walked away with a smile. It was

my great pleasure to stand three feet to his left

for the five years I was in Southwind. I hope to

one day coax him out of retirement (or at least

his retirement from playing with me).

Around 1982, my family moved across

Kennett Square from Southview Avenue to

Irwin Street. Our neighbors, the Mauchers (of

the late, lamented Hugo’s Inn), soon became

family friends and Mike, the baby of the

Maucher clan, my best bud. Fast-forward a few

decades and Mike and I reconnect (he is now a

big mahoff at La Mer), I cast his daughter in a

few of my plays, and it turns out his big sister

Mary Beth has been living in North Cape May

this whole time! Mary Beth was always nice to

me as a kid, even when I was being mean to her

brother (as 12-year-olds sometimes do). She’s

been a big supporter of my music over the last

few years as we rekindled our long-dormant

friendship. She recently began working for

Exit Zero on the retail end, which is cool. And

last Friday, I got to say to her the words I’ve

been wanting to say for the last 40 years. “The

restrooms are out of toilet paper.”

Other New Co-Worker of the Week: My

#1 fan, (but not in a creepy Kathy Bates in

Misery kind of way but maybe in a creepy Kathy

Bates in Misery kind of way) Sandy Mannik, is

now an Exit Zero-er! Exit Zero-ite? Anyway,

to my surprise and delight, her smiling face

greeted me at Cafe 64 (Exit Zero Ferry Station)

when I dropped off their bundles Thursday

morning. I’m sure she took the job to make a

little extra summer cash and totally not to get

closer access to me, smash my ankles with a

sledgehammer and keep me doped up in her

basement, right? Right? Either way, I have a

THE ULTIMATE CAPE MAY FOOD & DRINK GUIDE

What You Need To

Know About The

Food And The Vibe

Aleathea’s is located right across the street from the

beach. In warmer months, enjoy a cocktail on their

lovely porch as you watch people go by.

Enjoy the quiet beauty of this 62-acre farm in West

Cape May and then indulge in the farm-to-table

treats for breakfast or lunch. The soups, salads,

sandwiches and juices are excellent.

Check out why Congress Hall’s restaurant is a favorite

of locals as well as hotel guests. They serve classic

tavern food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a

choice of indoor and outdoor dining.

The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with

exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a

dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven

pizza with draft beers.

Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy

renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and

there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to

enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.

Step inside the new eatery and retail store at the

Cape May ferry terminal. Enjoy a quick meal or snack

before hopping on the ferry and shop all the Exit Zero

and new Ferry Park Swag!

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw

bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus

outside tables for some great people-watching!

As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get

Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat

pies have been receiving rave reviews.

Focused on community, this restaurant provides

fresh homemade food made from local ingredients,

including fresh-baked artisan breads.

Enjoy your meal on The Ebbitt Room porch,

overlooking tree-lined Jackson Street, or take in the

buzzy vibe of the dining room and bar.

Located in North Cape May and their newest

location on the Cape May beachfront, serving up

affordable and authentic Mexican dishes made from

only the freshest ingredients.

THE ULTIMATE CAPE MAY FOOD & DRINK GUIDE

What You Need To

Know About The

Food And The Vibe

Casual and family-friendly, E. M. Hemingway’s offers

fine seafood, prime beef and excellent specials. All

right across from the beachfront. Great place to

watch sports, too.

Thai and Indian food, plus there are some fun

American dishes, too and great burgers. Enjoy drafts

and cans from Cape May Brewing Co plus some

seriously crafty cocktails.

Inside, enjoy the exciting maritime-themed decor

inside. Outside, you can enjoy eating out in the

middle of Decatur Street, under the canopy.

This hotspot is a gastropub from the owners of Tisha’s.

Here you’ll enjoy the same high-quality food and

high-quality service, in a relaxed atmosphere.

This local legend of an eatery serves up their signature

breakfast items, mouth-watering lunches and

generous dinners all in a welcoming and relaxed

environment.

A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,

good food, regular entertainment, and the views are

spectacular.

Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara

Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of

Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.

Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,

dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the

Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape

May experience.

A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent

food (the thin-crust pizzas are excellent), great bar

vibe and service. Lucky Bones gets it right every time.

It’s the original fine dining restaurant in Cape May.

The food is always creative and the breakfasts and

brunches, hard to beat — hence the lines.

Homemade specialties and secret sauces, from classic

pizza (using homemade dough daily) to paninis, garlic

knots and pasta dishes.

In the world of action drama, looking the

part is half the battle. I’ve never been able

to see Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher

convincingly. I understand he’s a box

office draw and yes has found the fountain

of youth. Also, I know he does most of his

own stunts — or so they say. And he’s not a

bad actor. His work on Born on the Fourth of July

(1989) was worthy of the Oscar nomination he

received, but I’m not exactly running to see any

of his films. And I don’t see him as the rough

loner Reacher.

Enter Alan Ritchson. New to Amazon

Prime is a series simply called Reacher, and

Ritchson is the lead. The entire first season is

available. Quiet, brooding yet always thinking

and ready for action, this Reacher is convincing.

He’s a drifter but not the one who needs

a backpack.

He comes to a small town in the Georgia

looking for his missing brother. What he finds

is a plot that unfolds with deliberately measured

intent. This is a detective story as well

as an action series. As he gets sucked into

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

what he thinks is a money laundering scheme,

he slowly finds it’s an intentional operation.

Every turn gives Reacher the opportunity to

put his analytical skills to the test while flexing

his muscles too.

And about those muscles — did I mention

Ritchman is a beefcake. Can I say that here?

The guy looks like can bench press a horse. In

other work, he’s played a lot of superhero roles,

and Reacher is not too much of a departure.

With mostly grunting short answers from his

character, this wasn’t much of an acting stretch

for him. Still, he pulls it off very well. Now,

can he play some of the non-hero characters

Cruise has always pulled off? Not too likely in

my opinion.

The action and plot turns in this one make

it very tempting to binge swing from one show

to the next. This one is not likely to win a

whole lot of awards, but then again I’m the

guy who said CODA was going to win all three

of the Oscars that it eventually took home. So,

watch Reacher even if you didn’t like the Cruise

portrayal. Heck, watch the series even if you

did like it’s original. This one is more captivating…

and fun.

For some added fun, and for a free Amazon

gift card, be the first to email flixyoumissed@

gmail.com with either another Tom Cruise

performance that won him an Oscar nomination

— there were three total — or who beat

him in 1989 to win the award for Best Actor

against his Born on the Fourth of July performance.

And no peeking online!

They’re back. If you drive past your

neighborhood Osprey nest, you’ll find

one or two adult birds perched on

the rim. After a winter (or two) in

South America, the Fish Hawks have

returned to nest. I say “two” years because

second year birds remain in their winter

territories until their third year. This highly

specialized bird of prey is singular in many

respects, not the least of which is its diet of

fish. It takes a measure of anatomical refinement

for a bird to subsist on a diet of fish.

Talons with fish gripping spicules in the pads,

feathers so waterproof that water runs off in

rivulets and eyes capable of compensating

for refraction. The net of talons is applied

where the fish is, not where refraction makes

it appear.

Along the banks of the Maurice River

and adjacent wetlands are scores of breeding

Osprey. I’ll go so far as to say that the breeding

density of Osprey on the Bayshore represents

the highest density of nesting Osprey

in the world. In August when young were

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

fledging, I counted over 100 Osprey in a 360

degree sweep with binoculars. Osprey fledge

between 0-4 young per nesting attempt with

food availability determining the degree of

success. Three young are about par for birds

breeding on the Bayshore, a testimony to

a healthy marine ecosystem, one bearing a

surfeit of menhaden, Osprey’s fish of choice.

Found in numbers and forging close to the

surface, Menhaden are an odds-on choice to

become Osprey prey. Larger fish are sometimes

taken but that courts risk. Clay Sutton

once told me his father and uncle netted a

bluefish with two Osprey feet embedded in its

back. They presumed the Osprey latched onto

a fish too big to lift out of the water, was pulled

under, drowned and ultimately disintegrated

leaving only the feet intact.

I once witnessed an Osprey pull under in

such a fashion off Cape May Point State Park.

But this is rare. Osprey typically rise like a

Phoenix with fish in tow and water droplets

falling astern as the fortunate fisherman ferries

his catch ashore to feed hungry young.

The greatest challenge is avoiding the

fish-thieving predilections of Bald Eagles.

Eagles scoop fish from the surface but cannot

submerge themselves like Osprey. The

Osprey, for their part, seem to take the pilferage

in stride. There’s plenty of menhaden

to go around.

So, take advantage of your birthright as a

Cape May resident. Go out and savor the bird

world’s master fisherman.

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, explore your mind, body and spirit with beach yoga!

Tension melts away at the water’s

edge. Maybe it’s the natural beauty,

the knowledge that you’re on vacation,

or it’s negative ions, molecules

that, Balance Yoga’s Judy Heany says,

“produce biochemical reactions that increase

levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping

to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and

boost our daytime energy.” Whatever the reason,

the beach is a special place for yoga.

There’s a sense of community in yoga

on the beach. The camaraderie of class helps

you to feel graceful as you put yourself into

awkward positions in public. Others are jogging

around you, offering inspiration. You

may hear the Coasties chanting in the background

as they train. There’s no winning

or losing, but you’re a part of something.

Yoga on the beach presents some challenges,

Heany notes. Sand is an unstable surface, so

Balance teaches a modified flow class, light

on pushups and handstands. The focus is

on “developing strength without strain,” so

clients feel “relaxed, refreshed and ready for

the day.” Sand sticks to mats, so bring a large

beach towel. And you may get a little wet. But

these pale in comparison to the benefits. You

may feel the buzz of a “yoga high” and gain an

appreciation for what your body can do.

Yoga can be translated from the Sanskrit

as “unity” and Balance Yoga is putting the

“unity” in “community,” offering “pay-whatyou-can”

yoga at the Cove Beach this summer.

The regular fee is $20, and Balance will donate

10% of this to local charities like Animal

Outreach, Beacon Animal Rescue, CARA and

Family Promise. Owner Heany says, “It’s our

way of giving back.” From Memorial Day to

Labor Day, Balance Yoga offers daily classes

on the beach at the Sunset Pavilion at 8am.

If you can’t wait, Balance also has studio

classes. Visit balancecapemay.com for information

and registration. A drop-in class is

$20, a 10-class pass is $190, and a season pass

(Memorial Day to Labor Day) is $297.

Yoga Cape May also offers yoga at

Convention Hall Tuesdays and Thursdays at

9, and on the beach starting May 27, with

Karen Manette Bosna. Sessions are $5. Or,

consider a yoga retreat. “Listening with Our

Hearts” is a chance to “explore mind, body

and spirit” in a three-day event, May 22-24, at

the Chalfonte Hotel, 301 Howard Street, Cape

May. The event offers guidance in yoga and

meditation, plus a drum circle Registration

is $250 per person. A $50 deposit is required.

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Open daily 9-5

203 Sunset Boulevard, West Cape May | 609- 884-1849

The Answer Lady invites inquiries from

gentle readers on all manner of relationship

quandaries, matters of the

heart and ethics. If you’d like to send

a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,

simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate

the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

My significant other of seven years and

I have talked about buying a house together.

He is 30. I am 45 but that has never made a

difference until now. It seems that once we

started looking at houses and found one, he

got cold feet — and not just about buying the

house. Suddenly, he is questioning our whole

relationship. I want to know what I’ve done. I

thought everything was fine. We have never

had an argument until now. What should I do

about it? — Stun Gunned

Dear Stun

You have done nothing wrong, but it

appears your significant other is looking 30

years down the road when that mortgage

matures when you are 75 and he’s 60. There’s

not much you can do about all that, but the

Answer Lady strongly advises you to start

disengaging yourself from this relationship.

Furthermore, you better start looking for other

accommodations, so you are not left on a long

walk off a short pier. The fact that you didn’t

see this coming does not mean there weren’t

signals. Perk up your spirits with a visit to Lace

Silhouettes. Get something feminine, frilly

and wickedly indulgent.

Dear Answer Lady

My teenage daughter told me last week

that she and her girlfriend are having a

physical relationship. She asked me to not tell

the girl’s parents — they are very religious and

will forbid them from seeing each other. I don’t

know them, but I feel my husband and I are in

an awkward situation. He thinks we should

leave it alone and be thankful our daughter

thought enough of us to tell us all about it and

betraying her trust will ruin our relationship.

Do think this is true? — Not Fond of Secrets

Dear Not Fond of

The Answer Lady feels your husband is

dead right. The relationship is complicated

— they are underage and in a same-sex

relationship with one set of parents rather

rigid and without their daughter’s confidence.

Your daughter trusts you both. Protect that at

all costs. But make your feelings known about

secrets. Make your home as welcoming as

possible to them both. Coming out isn’t easy.

The Answer Lady sees a Lucky Bones oven

pizza and family night movies in your future.

GOLDIE arrived at the shelter when her

owner could no longer care for her. She is an

eight-month-old girl with a lot of energy and

great potential to be a wonderful companion

to a family. Goldie loves to run in the yard, and

it helps to tame her puppy energy. She knows

several behavior cues, but would do well in a

family that would continue her training.

HARLEY II is a friendly, eight-year-old lab

who came to the shelter when his owner

could no longer keep him. He loves running

and playing in the yard and is very affectionate

with people. Harley gets along with other

dogs, cats and children and would make the

perfect companion for a family looking for a

loving new member.

MISKA is a three-year-old beauty who came

to the shelter when her owner passed away.

She can be shy at first but warms up pretty

quickly. She previously lived with a small dog

and would do well in a home another. Miska

has good leash skills and enjoys the interaction

of training. She would be best in a home

with breed knowledge and older children.

hard she tries. Stassi is in great health, spayed
