Year Four
It’s hard to believe that this issue marks our fourth year
in business. Created as a medium to provide Latino
representation, educate a multicultural audience on
diverse topics and celebrate New Orleans, in this short
time, with a pandemic in between, VIVA NOLA has
become a trusted voice and an essential resource for our
community. In retrospect, we realize that we were right
about the need to fill this void, and we are grateful we
were around during so many critical times of health and
hurricane emergencies. We remain firm in our mission of
connecting communities and look forward to continuing
to grow.
On this issue, we celebrate that our festivals are back
and highlight one of the best pianists in this city, born in
Honduras but destined to enhance our musical scene. We
are happy to feature two young achievers who deserve
some credit for their work and are excited to share a
list of the Latin music performances during the French
Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest.
Let’s keep on celebrating the beautiful culture of
New Orleans together!

It’s Festival Time!

After a few years of
absence due to the
pandemic, the city’s
various festivals are ready to
host the public that impatiently
waits to enjoy the unique
atmosphere of each of these
events.
The New Orleans Jazz &
Heritage Festival and the
French Quarter Festival are
the most extensive showcase
of national and international
artists. Still, most importantly,
they benefit local Louisiana
musicians, artisans, and food
vendors.
The music festivals provide a
space for all musical genres
and artists under one roof,
making the festival season the
most diverse event of the year,
musically speaking. Genres like
jazz, brass, R&B, soul, zydeco,
and Latin and Caribbean
sounds are heard all over the
city. It is impossible not to find
a show to enjoy on the lineup.
Working alongside the festivals
is another catalyst of New
Orleans talent. WWOZ 90.7
FM, a New Orleans radio
station established by the
Jazz and Heritage Foundation
in 1987, counts thousands of
listeners locally, nationally, and
worldwide. WWOZ has been
the station responsible for
bringing the music of Louisiana
into every home.
The radio station is in charge
of broadcasting live music
from various festivals to its
listeners every year. Beth
Arroyo Utterback, the general
manager of WWOZ 90.7 FM, is
excited to have these events
back in person this year. “We
are thrilled to be once again
broadcasting live from the

fairgrounds for Jazz Fest and French Quarter
Fest.” The live broadcast is “the next best option”
for those not fortunate enough to attend these
festivals. “For those who can’t attend in person,
you can “Fest in Place” with us through our daily
live broadcasts from multiple stages at both
festivals,” Arroyo Utterback adds.

These festivals have also been a great showcase
of the Latin music influence in New Orleans. The
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will
provide acts from international singers such as
Jose Feliciano and Gilberto Santa Rosa and local
bands like The Iguanas, Mariachi Jalisco, Rumba
Buena, and many others.
The French Quarter Festival also includes Latin
music in its lineup. Cuban and Cuban American
artists Alexey Marti and Margie Perez, the Brazilian
band Amigos do Samba, and Dominican singer
Fermin Ceballos will be some of the musicians
adding tropical sounds to the festival that takes
over the French Quarter.
Undoubtedly, the city of New Orleans knows
how to celebrate its rich and diverse culture and
attract the attention of millions of tourists around

temporada de festivales. Luego de
algunos años de ausencia debido a
la pandemia, los diferentes festivales
de la ciudad están listos para recibir
al público que espera impaciente
disfrutar del ambiente único de cada
uno de estos eventos.
El New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival y el French Quarter Festival
son la muestra más amplia de artistas
nacionales e internacionales. Aún así,
lo más importante es que benefician a
los músicos, artesanos y vendedores
de comida locales de Luisiana.
Los festivales de música brindan
un espacio para todos los géneros

As many locals
know, the
summer heat
is approaching with the
arrival of April and May.
With cooler breezes still
sprinkling in, it is nice to
get higher doses of the
naturally occurring sun
vitamin - Vitamin D.
The summer boosts
happier moods and spirits,
partly due to our exposure
to more sunlight. Vitamin
D is responsible for many
different processes in the
human body. Although
there are rich food sources
of Vitamin D, such as cod
liver oil, meat, fortified
milk, eggs, butter, and
mushrooms, the best way
to absorb Vitamin D is
through the skin. Outdoor
activities are a great way
to get a dose. In addition,
the skin should be exposed
for short amounts of time,
depending on the melanin
in the skin (darker skin may
need more exposure).
Time of day, latitude,
pollution, and season
(winter vs. summer) can
influence absorption.
Oral intake can vary with
dosage recommendations
increasing for those with
osteoporosis, diabetes
mellitus, obesity, and
those on glucocorticoids.
Additionally, the exciting
role Vitamin D may play
in emerging SARS-CoVinfection
and outcomes is
still being researched.
Vitamin D also works
synergistically with calcium
and Vitamin K in the body.
Before supplementing,
check with your doctor
to evaluate levels first
since some may require
therapeutic doses. Also,
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble
vitamin; therefore, food
sources and supplements
should be consumed with a
meal or other fats such as
olive oil, avocado or dairy.
Louisiana has many
outdoor festivals during
this season, so pick your
favorite and enjoy some
Vitamin D responsibly!

vitamina D.
El verano mejora el estado de
ánimo y pone el espíritu más
feliz, debido en parte a nuestra
exposición a mayor luz solar.
La vitamina D es responsable
de muchos procesos en el
cuerpo humano. Aunque existen
fuentes alimenticias ricas en
vitamina D, como el aceite de
hígado de bacalao, la carne, la
leche fortificada, los huevos, la
mantequilla y los champiñones,
la mejor manera de absorber la
vitamina D es a través de la piel.
Las actividades al aire libre son
una excelente manera de obtener
una dosis. Además, la piel debe

Oscar Rossignoli has become one of the
most relevant pianists in the New Orleans
Jazz scene. He arrived from Honduras, his
native country, in 2011 with a scholarship for LSU
to pursue a degree in Classical Music and Piano
Performance.
From the age of three, his father, a musician
at heart, instilled in him a love for music, and,
recognizing his talent, sent him to a specialized
music school.
He wanted to study jazz but followed his
professor’s advice to continue his classical piano
studies since jazz would come naturally from being
in Louisiana. After graduating from LSU, he wanted
to move to New York to pursue a master’s degree
and be closer to his heroes, renowned musicians
like Christian McBride and Pat Metheny. But his
desire to take a year off in New Orleans before
starting his Master’s degree turned into over eight
years of a living experience. In New Orleans, he
found a constant source of work and collaborations
with renowned artists. New Orleans became his
real-world school that taught what he deems the
most valuable jazz lesson. “New Orleans taught me
how this music should feel.”
He got his Master’s in Fine Arts, constantly
traveling back and forth from the LSU campus to
his performances. In the city of jazz, Rossignoli
has shared various stages with the most relevant
representatives of the genre; musicians whom
he studied through CDs became his ensemble
partners. He remembers the first time he arrived at
a venue only to find out that he would be playing
with renowned drummer Herlin Reily. “Experiencing
that firsthand is incredible,” he recalls.
These kinds of experiences occur often. At the
beginning of 2021, Rossignoli recalls such an
experience. “All the biggest names in New Orleans
music right now were playing in that room… The

energy in that room was ‘wow!’ I just
thought, where am I right now? What
am I doing here?” he recalls happily.
Arriving at a virtual performance
event from Bywater Bakery during
what would have been the start of
Mardi Gras, he realized he would be
sharing the stage with John Boutté,
Herlin Riley, Wendell Brunious, Chris
Severin, and Germaine Bazzle. And it
is in moments like that, that Rossignoli
becomes one more family member
of the New Orleans music scene and
gets to achieve his goal of using his
music as a means of expression that
crosses borders.
His participation with different artists,
trios, and quartets throughout the
city establish Rossignoli as a great
musician. And as a great musician,
Rossignoli released his first solo
album. Inertia was his response to the
existential crisis he, like many other
musicians, experienced because of a
pandemic that left them without gigs,
work, and an audience. Rossignoli
materialized his desire to compose
and direct his production. He used
that time away from the stage to visit
the studio and record his
solo album, a combination
of original pieces and
improvisations.
Defining the genre of his
album is unnecessary.
Rossignoli doesn’t believe
in labels. Instead, Inertia is a
reflection of the influences that
have shaped him. In general,
conceptualizing Rossignoli
is only effective when done
through the senses. “Show
up at my Frenchmen St. gigs
in Snug Harbor. Watch me
interact with people,” he says
in response to who Oscar
Rossignoli is.
His undeniable talent,
his love for music, his
dedication to perfecting his
art, the way he relates to his
colleagues, and the energy
of his presentations have led him
to success. He defines success for
musicians as the possibility of making
a living from their craft, being in a
position to decline presentations that
they prefer not to take, and being
considered for shows on the region’s
most iconic stages.
“Every year, I look
forward to Jazz Fest. It
is an extension of what
we experience in New
Orleans every week,
but on a larger scale
where there is a good
exchange between
visiting bands,” says Rossignoli about
his upcoming events.
Many good things are coming
for Rossignoli. With concerts and
festivals back, Rossignoli’s schedule
is getting packed. A European tour
with Joe Dyson is on the horizon. He’s
releasing a new album with his trio
Extended in May and another album
with Extended plus Brad Walker at
the end of the year. He also plans to
release another piano album soon.
“I focus on what I want to express, and
I am honest with my music.” His level
of dedication is evident. Currently,
his fun consists of analyzing movie
soundtracks. “I’m a big nerd,” he
admits. Rossignoli says creating music
scores is something he would like to
explore.

Óscar Rossignoli se ha convertido
en uno de los pianistas más
relevantes de la escena jazzística de
Nueva Orleans. Llegó de Honduras,

during COVID times

With no ending timeline
to the Covid-19 spread
that has burdened us
for over two years, many workers
and companies face constant
disruption challenges. Although
the future remains unclear, we
can be sure of employee burnout
across industries. Burnout is
especially true for working
parents.
We have witnessed many
schools transitioning to virtual
classrooms,
daycare centers
closed, and many
in-person activities
canceled during
this pandemic.
When school
or daycare is
unavailable,
parents have the
difficult task of responding to their
job responsibilities and caring
for their children simultaneously,
which can be disruptive to a
working environment.
Some employers don’t offer
remote work options, which has
led to many losing their jobs or
has driven employees to make
the difficult decision to resign
when they can’t find a support
system for childcare.
We are currently witnessing
“The Great Resignation,” which
refers to the record number of
people leaving their jobs. For this
reason, companies have reported
many job openings that can’t get
filled. Also, news outlets have
reported that more than four
million Americans quit their jobs
in late 2021.

With so many disruptions in our
environment, flexibility becomes a
valuable asset for employees and
companies alike. In addition to
flexibility, best practices such as
role clarity, task clarity, structure,
and handbook first policies play
an essential role in securing high
performance during tough times.
While not every job has the
luxury of being flexible and
remote, if you are an employer
with these options, offer them.

Sin un cronograma final para la
propagación de Covid-19 que
nos ha agobiado durante más
de dos años, muchos trabajadores
y empresas enfrentan desafíos
constantes de disrupción. Aunque el
futuro sigue sin estar claro, podemos
estar seguros del agotamiento de los
empleados en todas las industrias. El
agotamiento es especialmente cierto
para los padres que trabajan.
Hemos sido testigos de la transición
de muchas escuelas a aulas
virtuales, el cierre de guarderías
y la cancelación de actividades
presenciales durante esta pandemia.

Out and about
Fabrizio Guido: Showing Versatility On and
Off-Screen

Used to shooting film and television
projects out in his hometown of
Los Angeles, California, Fabrizio
Guido stepped out of his comfort zone
when coming to New Orleans to shoot the
latest collaboration between Amazon and
Blumhouse Studios, “Black As Night.”
The son of a theater actress, Guido,
sometimes referred to as Fab by his friends,
started acting in short films made by his
mom’s friends.
“I got my first taste of the set life, and I
was like, ‘I really want to do this acting thing,
and I want to pursue it,’” he said.
At the ripe age of seven, Guido found a
commercial agent who helped him land very
successful gigs. Years later, his agent began
to book him roles in television and film. For
Guido, he said, “it’s kind of been history”
ever since that moment.
Guido has since worked on many
projects, from a supporting role in the Brad
Pitt-led action film “World War Z” to the
main cast in the Netflix comedy series “Mr.
Iglesias.” Guido says versatility is the skill
that has aided him both as an actor and as a
person to land these roles.
“I like to take on different tasks and go
out of my comfort zone when it comes to
life,” he said. “The same goes for my acting.
I like to take on different characters, and I
like to learn new styles, whether comedic or
dramatic in technique.”
In “Black as Night,” Guido plays the
role of Pedro, the best friend of the main
character Shawna, played by “All-American”
actress Asjha Cooper. The film follows the
pair as they discover a secret society of

vampires living in New Orleans and turning
the homeless and disenfranchised into
blood-sucking monsters. Shawna and Pedro,
personally affected by the discovery, team
up with other teens to stop the vampires and
prevent them from taking over the city.
Through the auditioning process, Guido
said that he fell in love with the film and the
character of Pedro before he even finished
reading the script.
“There was stuff that I identified
within Pedro, and I felt that it was a great
opportunity to take on this character that
was such a positive figure and was a hero in
the story,” he said.
In the film, Pedro is a first-generation
Latino whose family came from Mexico
and settled in New Orleans. Offered an
athletic scholarship to a prestigious school,
Pedro struggles with deciding to go or not
throughout the film.
To get into the role of Pedro, Guido
created a backstory for the character taking
qualities he observed in the script and trying
to amplify them.
“It was the loyalty and love for Shawna,
and I just thought about the loyalty and love
that I have for my friends,” he said. “He’s
tough. He’s confident, accomplished, and
doesn’t take anything from anyone.”
That confidence was something that
Guido said he had to work on when
portraying Pedro.
“I’m an outspoken person, I’d say in
my life, but there just had to be this new
confidence that I had to click with,” he said.
“Pedro’s more thoughtful, and everything he
says seems to be accurate and not just what
is on his mind.”
However, a film is nothing without its
setting, and with “Black as Night” being in
New Orleans, Guido got to experience the
city for the first time through his own eyes
and the eyes of his local co-stars.
While shooting in the city, Guido said
his favorite place to visit was City Park.
According to him, actors in the cast would
meet up there to run lines. On one occasion,
Guido decided to take the day to explore
the park after a co-star couldn’t make it and
got lost.
“I didn’t know where I ended up. Frankie
(who plays Shawna’s brother in the film)
didn’t know where I ended up. Nobody
knows where I ended up,” he said. “I just
followed a body of water, and I was all
alone, and I could’ve sworn that I was being
followed by something out there.”
The filming began in early 2020 but
was shut down three weeks in because of

COVID-19, according to Guido. Sent
back to Los Angeles, it wouldn’t be
until four months later that Guido would
return to New Orleans for filming.
“We were one of the first films back
in production during that time, not just in
New Orleans but globally,” he said. “Our
producers and people on set were in
communication with other productions
in other parts of the world trying to set
the standard of what would be the new
norm in all of this.”
Shooting during COVID meant getting
a test every morning, regardless of
whether one was going to set or not,
and wearing a mask during the filming
process, according to Guido.
“I’m very happy to say that I had
already known these people, and they
were people I trusted before filming,” he
said. “I felt very safe with them, and our
communication was just great. I think
they handled it with a lot of grace.”
As a Latino, Guido thinks the film
industry is evolving and pushing for
three-dimensional Latino characters. In
picking out the roles he auditions for, he
looks to see whether the project will be
fun and whether or not the character he
is portraying feels like a natural person.
“We are so much more than
stereotypes,” he said. “And as I grow
in my career, I’m able to choose what
I want to do with more liberty and
have more of a say in making these
characters as authentic as possible.”
Guido also considers himself to be
very confident in his Latino identity.
Despite having a name not usually
associated with a Latino name, he said
he believes that this has in no way
affected his career.
“I think my name is now attached
to a body of work, and they can see
and be like, ‘There is no doubt that this
is something he could pull off. He’s
actually Latino,’” he said. “My family just
so happened to, many generations ago,
come from Italy and come to Sonora. I
don’t know much about Italy, but I can
tell you a lot about Sonora.”
With a bright future ahead in the
world of entertainment, Guido can’t wait
to tell his fans on social media what his
next project is.
“I think all year I went talking about
how much I wanted to do a period
piece, and I was heard,” he said. “That’s
all I can say. I’m very excited for what’s
to come.”
However, regardless of where Guido
goes for his next role, New Orleans will
have a place in his heart.
“Shout out to New Orleans always,”
he said. “This city treated me way too
nice, and I can’t wait to visit again.”

Filarmónica de Bogotá at age seventeen on a
nationwide telecast for an audience of over nine
million people. Celebrated for his passionate and
mesmerizing performances worldwide, he is in high
demand as soloist, chamber musician, lecturer and
recording artist. Born in the City of Cali, Colombia,
Ricardo Cobo is the son of Lebanese immigrants
who came to the Americas looking for a new
life during the first half of the 20th century. His
mother, a classical pianist and avid visual artist,
taught him to play and read music as a child. His
father, a brilliant surgeon who founded the first
university school of medicine in Cali, Colombia,
was a devoted concertgoer and lover of classical
music. He instilled a fascination for guitar music
in his young son while studying for his surgeries,
which he prepared while listening to long hours of
Flamenco and classical recordings.

Orleans and offering an unforgettable classic guitar
concert on April 29th at the Diboll Auditorium and
Gallery to benefit the medicine programs of the

proyectos de cine y
televisión en su ciudad
natal de Los Ángeles, California,
Fabrizio Guido salió de su zona
de confort cuando vino a Nueva
Orleans para filmar la reciente
colaboración entre Amazon y
Blumhouse Studios, “Black As
Night”.
Hijo de una actriz de teatro,
Guido, a quien sus amigos a
veces llamaban Fab, comenzó a
actuar en cortometrajes realizados
por los amigos de su madre.
“Tuve mi primer contacto con la
vida del set, y pensé, ‘realmente
quiero hacer esto de la actuación,
y quiero perseguirlo’”, dijo.

Guido dijo que se enamoró de la
película y del personaje de Pedro
incluso antes de terminar de leer
el guión.

dentro de Pedro, y sentí que era
una gran oportunidad para asumir

historia”, dijo.
En la película, Pedro es un latino
de primera generación cuya
familia vino de México y se instaló
en Nueva Orleans. Al recibir una
beca deportiva en una prestigiosa
escuela, Pedro lucha con la

decisión de tomarla o no a lo largo
de la película.
Para meterse en el papel de
Pedro, Guido creó una historia de
fondo para el personaje tomando
las cualidades que observó en el
guión y tratando de amplificarlas.
“Fue la lealtad y el amor por
Shawna, y solo pensé en la lealtad y
el amor que tengo por mis amigos”,
dijo. “Él es duro. Tiene mucha
confianza, es consumado y no le
quita nada a nadie”.
Esa confianza fue algo en lo que
Guido dijo que tuvo que trabajar al
interpretar a Pedro.
“Soy una persona franca, diría en
mi vida, pero tenía que encontrar
esa nueva confianza con la que
tenía que hacer clic”, dijo. “Pedro es
más reflexivo, y lo que dice parece
acertado aunque no diga todo lo
que tiene en mente”.
Sin embargo, una película no es
nada sin su escenografia, y con
“Black as Night” basada en Nueva
Orleans, Guido pudo experimentar
la ciudad por primera vez a través
de sus propios ojos y a través de
los ojos de sus compañeros de
reparto locales.

Guido dijo que su lugar favorito
para visitar era City Park. Según él,

semanas después debido a
COVID-19, según Guido. El tuvo que
regresar a Los Ángeles, y no fue
sino hasta cuatro meses después
que Guido regresó a Nueva Orleans
para filmar.
“Fuimos una de las primeras
películas que volvió a estar en
producción durante ese tiempo,
no solo en Nueva Orleans sino en
todo el mundo”, dijo. “Nuestros
productores y la gente en el set
estaba en comunicación con otras
producciones en otras partes del
mundo tratando de establecer el
estándar de lo que sería la nueva
norma en todo esto”.
Rodar durante el COVID significaba
hacerse una prueba todas las
mañanas, independientemente de
si se iba a asistir al set o no, y usar
una máscara durante el proceso de
filmación, según Guido.
“Estoy muy feliz de decir que ya
conocía a estas personas y eran
personas en las que confiaba
antes de filmar”, dijo. “Me sentí

comunicación fue excelente. Creo

Como latino, Guido cree

papeles para los que audiciona,
busca ver si el proyecto será
divertido y si el personaje que
interpreta se siente o no como una
persona real.
“Somos mucho más que
estereotipos”, dijo. “Y a medida que
avanzo en mi carrera, puedo elegir
con más libertad lo que quiero
hacer y tener más voz para hacer
que estos personajes sean lo más
auténticos posible”.
Guido también se considera muy
seguro de su identidad latina. A
pesar de tener un nombre que no
suele asociarse con un nombre
latino, dijo que cree que esto no
ha afectado de ninguna manera su
carrera.
“Creo que mi nombre ahora está
ligado a un historial de trabajo, y
pueden ver y decir: ‘No hay duda
de que esto es algo que él podría
lograr. En realidad es latino’”, dijo.
“Por casualidad, mi familia, hace
muchas generaciones, vino de Italia
y vino a Sonora. No sé mucho sobre
Italia, pero puedo contarte mucho
sobre Sonora”.
Con un futuro brillante en el
mundo del entretenimiento, Guido
no puede esperar para contarles a
sus fanáticos en las redes sociales
cuál es su próximo proyecto.
“Creo que todo el año estuve
hablando de lo mucho que quería
hacer una pieza de época, y me
escucharon”, dijo. “Estoy muy
emocionado por lo que está por
venir”.

próximo papel, Nueva Orleans
