26 A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK Chris Fraser The Book Nook — “A Lending Library” We are now re-opened Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. **** I have a great new book to tell you about - it’s called The Rainbow by Carly Schabowski. While visiting her grandparents, Isla comes across an old photo of her grandfather wearing a Nazi uniform. When she asks her grandmother about this, her grandmother tells her it’s not her grandfather in that photo. However, Isla does not think she is right, but cannot ask her grandfather as he is suffering from dementia. Isla decides to go to Poland, where her grandfather comes from, to visit his brother and try to find out the truth. Her grandfather’s brother, Andrzej, gives her some letters from her grandfather, and she tries to put the pieces of her grandfather’s life together. As a young man before the war, he met Zofia and she was the love of his life and he did everything he could to keep her safe once Poland was taken over by the Nazis. He was a very brave man who had to join the German army, but he found ways to secretly help Andrzej get Polish people to safety. This is an amazing book based on a true story. I was totally hooked from the first page to the last so I hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I did. Don’t forget to come to our BOOK SALE being held in the library on June 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as part of the “Seriously Seniors” event. Please tell your friends to come and see all the great books we have for sale. Now that we have computerized the library, I hope you will come in and let us help you find some great books to read. Our volunteers will be there to help you sign out books. It is being held in the Book Nook Library from 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. We have lots of books and DVDs for you to buy and we look forward to seeing all of you then. Please note the Book Nook has now been computerized and we appreciate your patience while we had to close the library in order to get all our books inputted into the new system. We can do so much more to help you now, so please make sure you come in and register with the library so that you can get books signed out. A volunteer will be there to help you at all times. Thank you. Book Nook Librarian WRITING YOUR LIFE STORY I am pleased to report that there has been sufficient interest shown in this new Activity Group, and that the Board has approved it. Watch for the date and time on the website or the monthly email or the September Sentinel. May I remind you that, to participate in this class, you need to be a paid-up member of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association, and you need to register for the program (no extra charge). This can be done at the front desk, or online via the City’s RecEnroll program. Additionally there will be a $2 fee for each class you attend. Registration will be available in August when updates to the computer system for fall classes are complete.
