A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
The longest day of the year is in June, which includes the summer
solstice; and June’s full moon is called the ‘strawberry moon’. Love,
devotion, and generosity are represented by June’s birth flowers, the rose
and honeysuckle. It’s a happy month of sunshine, growth, and flowers.
June also includes a busy schedule of events at the GWSA!
Remember to mark your calendar for our full day open house at the
Evergreen Centre. The “Seriously? Seniors?” planning team is preparing an
incredible day for everyone to enjoy, and we hope to entice a few new
members who drop by. This event includes demonstrations of many
activities; art and craft exhibitions; performances by the Silvertones and
Silver Strummers; artisans’ wares available for purchase; a Book Nook
book sale; a Euchre Tournament you can join, a major Raffle Draw for
fabulous prizes including a spa getaway; and even a 50/50 draw! You can
get your raffle tickets now (while they last) and the 50/50 draw tickets are
available on-site during the event. Check all the details on our website. You
can bring friends as there is free admission and it’s open to the public. This
is your GWSA today!
Dances are returning to the Evergreen Centre, with the first dance on June
25. Promoted as ‘Saturday Social Dances’, this will encourage members
and the public to join for a fun evening with a great DJ who will play a
wide variety of music. The committee plans to hold more dances in July,
August, and September! All the details are on the website, and you can buy
your tickets in advance at the Evergreen front desk or any City recreation
desk for just $15, while they last! Any remaining tickets will be sold the
night of the dance.
June is Seniors Month in Ontario. It’s a time when we recognize our
amazing older Ontarians and the contributions they have made in
communities across the province. We are planning the ‘June is Seniors
Month Walk/Flag Raising’ for Thursday, June 9. Meet us at Riverside Park
(Red Picnic Shelter) at 9:30 am and join the walk to City Hall at 10:00 am
for the 11:00 am flag raising ceremony, with greetings from the mayor, our
executive director, and others.
The Travel Committee has a series of trips in the works from now into the
fall with six currently detailed on the website. If you might enjoy a leisurely
cruise, a wine and food tour, a beachside café, a dance troupe, or learning
more about the local scene, there is something of interest for everyone! The
trips are available only to members, which is one more reason that GWSA
membership remains one of the best bargains around!
All of these events happen through the dedication of volunteers working
behind the scenes. This is what makes this organization work for its many
members across Guelph and Wellington. Thanks to everyone for their
ongoing contributions to an amazing team!
The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 1:30 pm on June 21. As
some directors’ terms end, there are fresh opportunities for you or someone
you know to join this leadership team. It is a wonderful way to give back to
community and share your lifetime of skills and talents, while enjoying the
benefits of an interactive group. The GWSA is directed largely by members
and this keeps us connected to our reason for being - providing services to
seniors in the community. Please contact the volunteer co-ordinator today if
you would like to explore what is available.
As this represents the last edition of The Sentinel until September, the
Board of Directors wishes everyone a safe and healthy summer. Be active,
get involved, and make friends - at the GWSA!
