on surviving Memorial Day
Weekend. I did not. Nothing sets off
a Sunday morning hangover quite like
dipping your thumb into a wet bowl of
Fancy Feast tuna then scratching your mustache
right under your nose. Mmm mmm.
Ever see Weird Science when Chet (Bill Paxton)
tells his hungover little brother “what you
need right now is a greasy pork sandwich
served in a dirty ashtray?” Yeah, that.
Other than that, it was a pretty good
week here at Undertow Central. I got to sing
a bunch and I’m seeing Top Gun: Maverick later
this week starring the World’s Last Movie Star,
Tom Cruise, so what’s to complain about?
How can you tell summer has officially
started? By how easily annoyed some people
get annoyed. Case in point; on my magazine
delivery route I travel the length of Sunset
Boulevard (Cape May Point, one of seven
areas I deliver to so, you know, hit the gas or
get out of my way.) And, while passing a slow
poke on my return trip, he proceeded to lay on
his horn for the 10 seconds or so it took me to
get around him. Now I ask you, Mr. Sunset
Honker, who was more annoying at 730am
on a Thursday morning? Me passing your
25MPH-going ass or you blaring your horn?
Case in point, part two; while in Villas,
I went a little quick through the True Value
parking lot as I approached Snippers Salon.
I even chided myself for it. “That was a little
quick, Terry. Slow it down, buddy.” Well, that
apparently wasn’t enough for the universe so
it sent the cashier outside to yell at me. I did
what I usually do to people who are yelling at
me; I ignored her. But it’s nice to know she’s
up there on her pedestal, waiting all day for us
mere mortals to make mistakes. The Batman
of local hardware store parking lots.
I went to pick up my son from his girlfriend’s
house on Saturday morning and for
the entirety of the 8-9am hour the guy on 97.3
ESPN managed to talk the entire time while
saying absolutely nothing and repeating his
1-800 bet line literally hundreds of times. It
was like a bit out of Rick & Morty. “Call this
number! We have all the bets! Guaranteed
winners! Remember, there are no guarantees!
Call this number! We have all the bets!” It was
like some weird kind of performance art. It
belongs in a museum. But you have to admire
his determination.
There was a guy walking around Exit Zero
with a MAC t-shirt on but I wasn’t sure where
to swipe my card. There was also a fella in a
Regal Beagle tee for whom we sang the iconic
theme song (Come and knock on our door…

For over a decade, Jimm Ross has been
on the Cape May art scene — if you
walk quickly enough you can see
for yourself. His work is featured at
Soma NewArt Gallery on Perry Street
through June 5. I’ve known Jimm for years. Not
only is he a world-class painter, but an exceptional
musician. His rendition of “Addicted to
Love” is a blast, raw and compelling.

These are not your traditional
seascapes. They’re not so abstract either.
They pop and crackle. “Zephyr” is a wonderful
explosion of sky. “Poverty Fence” is foreboding,
and “Shimmer” is quietly compelling.
These are paintings you’ll want to soak in.
“It’s my second show at Soma in a few
years,” Jimm told me as we spent some time
catching up. He said he ran his own gallery
since we last spoke and learned a lot about
setting up a business, managing other artists’
work, and selling pieces.
“There’s nothing more validating than
strangers walking in who don’t know me,”

he said, “and they connect with the work.
Nothing more gratifying.” Life hasn’t been so
easy for Jimm, but you wouldn’t know that
from his art.
“Don’t know how I managed to put that
show together under trials and struggles,” he
said. “The time I spend observing and painting
is a good escape for me. My intention is
to leave only beautiful things in this world.
Maybe I’m selfish to do what I’m doing, but
this is how I process the world. I’m trying to
capture things that are absolutely positive and
connect with those scenes to convey truth.
People say, ‘Hey, your work looks like photographs.’
I disagree. It’s all about tones for me
— it’s a ‘matter of fact’ thing, and the application
is a stream of consciousness.” Jimm says
there’s no shortage of material to inspire his
art in Cape May.
“There’s always a scene and I take it in,” he
begins, “then interpret it through the painting.
Music works the same way, and I’m hoping
to get back into making new music. All the
things that make up a good song also make up
a good painting… and make up a good person.
You feel something, express the truth. Be genuine,
be compassionate. People will connect
to the work and feel that. We’re making memories
for people. Each song is part of that, each
piece of art is too.”

beaches of the Delaware Bay
host one of the planet’s greatest
assemblies of migrating shorebirds.
Fresh from winter territories
in South America, the birds are frantic
to reach Arctic breeding grounds intime to
breed. The window between spring snowmelt
and first snows of autumn is narrow.
Shorebirds get off a single brood, if lucky, and
then start their return to winter territories by
mid-summer. Why go to so much trouble?
Because the insect riches that flourish in the
24-hour sunlight of an Arctic summer are
too bountiful to ignore. Some birds are even
metabolizing muscle tissue as they start their
final descent into Delaware Bay. The tiny,
lipid-rich eggs of the Horseshoe Crab is all
that stands between them and failure. If the
eggs are present in abundance, the birds will
double their weight in as little as two weeks.
This layer of fat must see the knot over the
inhospitable barrier that is the boreal forest of
Canada and sustain the birds during the lean

weeks before winter relinquishes its hold on
the Arctic and insects flourish. During years
when the crabs come late, the knot fails to
make weight and must delay their flight to
the Arctic. During such years, knot breeding
success suffers and the already “threatened”
species is further imperiled. But successful
or not, the first southbound knot will arrive
on Cape May beaches in late July. These early
arrivals are mostly failed breeders. Successful
breeders will follow leaving the care of young
to one partner. Grown young follow several
weeks later.
This staggered migration strategy allows
birds to avoid competition for food along key
migration routes. But in Spring, with timing
so critical, northbound birds are reliant upon
opportune food bonanzas such as the bloom
of Horseshoe Crab eggs on Delaware Bay. It’s
a high stakes game but one knot is designed
to play. Shorebirds are capable of migrating
thousands of miles, nonstop. Their capacity
for rapid weight gain permits them to refuel
quickly. Shorebird young are also highly precocial,
able to walk and feed within hours
of hatching. Adult supervision is minimal,
limited mostly to predator control. But the
birds have no control over the weather and
a cool spring often results in crabs breeding
late, throwing off the knot’s precise timetable.
This year seems to be such a year. The crabs
appear late, and the famished knot can only
wait in clusters above the reach of the tides
before they’re able to dig in.

Sometimes, all it takes is one hydrangea
snowball to grow a gardener.
Once that seed of interest is planted,
fertilize it by telling them they can
change the color of that bloom.
I’d like to think it’s the creativity, fresh air
and exercise that makes me enjoy gardening,
but I fear it’s also the dream of control. No
matter how many times it doesn’t work, the
idea that I might control Mother Nature is
intoxicating. It’s fun to lure butterflies to the
yard with milkweed or create a microclimate
with fencing. My young friend — a mad gardener
in training — seems to be of the same
mind. When he learned that gardeners have
been messing with the soil to alter the color
of hydrangeas for centuries, he was intrigued.
Hydrangeas, the forgiving plants that
thrive at the shore, are an ancient plant.
Scientists found evidence of hydrangeas in
Alaska 23 million years ago. They were named
in 1739 by botanist Grovonius, who thought
the flowers looked like a water pitcher, and
combined the names “hydro” for water and
“angeion” for pitcher. By Grovonius’ day,
gardeners knew how to manipulate plants,
as garden trends swung from the straight
lines and knot gardens of the Tudor era to
the curved lines and landscape gardens of
the 18th century, and back to formal beds of
the Victorian age. To modify the soil around
hydrangeas and therefore their color, gardeners
buried things like rusty nails or old fruit
under the plants. They knew blooms reflected
the acidity level of the soil. Today’s gardeners
can try commercial products, or old tools, like
lemon rinds or lime, to alter the soil. It doesn’t
always work — aluminum levels matter — but
it often does. How cool is that?
If you’re curious about what experiments
your gardening neighbors are up to, tour
Cape May’s gardens from the sidewalk, or
sign up for “The Gardens of Cape May” tour.
This tour, sponsored by Cape May MAC, is
on June 25, from 1pm to 4pm. Admission
is $25. “Step past the frontage and explore
the private plants and blooms of some of
the Cape May area’s natural areas and most
dedicated gardeners.” The self-guided tour
includes public and private gardens, including
the Emlen Physick Estate Gardens and the
Nature Center Conservancy’s Garrett Family
Preserve. There will be vendors at the Physick
Estate along with a complimentary wine tasting
by Cape May Winery. Visit capemaymac.

season, featuring three regional solo
artists. “Surf, Sand and Sun” by Phil
Courtney, “Influence of Color” by Kate
Mockus-Cipriani and “A Little Levity” by
Penny Beck will be on display June 11 to July 10.
Courtney captures the play of light and
movement of the surf, and the glittering effects
of the sand were his mission these past few
months. His series is painted in oils to achieve
the sparkling elements of his work. Cipriani
characterizes her style as contemporary with
aspects of impressionism. Her work is all dry
pastel paintings meant to reflect the vibrant
colors around us. Beck will portray the whimsical
side of life, inspired by nature and the
creatures of the earth using mostly acrylic.
Art lovers are invited to attend an Opening
Artist Reception on Saturday, June 11 from 6
to 9pm. SOMA is located at 31 Perry Street in

MAY came to the shelter as a stray and
although she is nervous at first with new people,
she will warm up after some time. She is
a sweet and gentle girl who loves to wander
around the yard, but not a big fan of toys. May
is new to walking on a leash, but learning. She
would be best in a family with older children
and a slow introduction to cats and dogs.
PRINCESS 2 came to the shelter when her
owner could no longer care for her. She is an
affectionate seven-year-old girl weighing in
at a stocky 61 pounds. Princess loves going
for walks, and she has excellent leash manners.
She is crate trained and good with children
and other dogs. Princess would be a great
addition to any family.
YODA is a calm, settled boy who came to the
shelter after being with his family for five
years. He has excellent leash manners and is
at his happiest cuddling with his family. Yoda
loves people and his previous owners were
devastated to have to surrender him. He will
need a slow introduction to other cats and
dogs, but great with children.

APRIL is a beautiful young kitty who is waiting
for a new life. Her last owners surrendered
her, her mother Shakira (right), and her litter
of kittens. She is spunky and sweet and in
need of a new loving home. April would do
well in a home with other cats and children.
She is also spayed and up to date on all vaccinations.
SHAKIRA came to the shelter with one of her
kittens April (left) and the rest of April’s litter.
She is waiting to find a loving family to adopt
her. As she waits, Shakira’s spirit has not broken,
and she is very friendly and playful. She
is up to date on all vaccinations and spayed.
Shakira would do well in a home with other
cats, dogs and children.
NIKE is a silly little cat that was rescued from
a tree by a nice fireman. He seemed to think it
was pretty funny and loved all the attention he
got. Nike is just under a year old and would do
well in a home with other cats, dogs and children.
He is very playful and brave so you may
need to keep an eye on this guy. Nike is up to
date on all vaccinations and neutered.
