First congress
Two Men of Taunton is about our
revolution as it happened.
On September 7, 1774, the Continental
Congress began with a prayer.
During this Constitutional Convention in
1787, Founding Father Benjamin Franklin
encouraged the practice of opening
with a prayer. (below)
They were educated white men, sought
a leadership position, and were happy
they defeated a king to ensure no king
or God would rule over them.
Signer Robert Treat Paine of
Massachusetts practiced Christian-
Deism called “the religion of nature”.
This rational theology mimicked
“freethinking” Europeans in the 17th
and 18th centuries. Deists insisted that
religious truth should be subject to the
authority of human reason, not divine
revelation.
These two historic photos indicate that
reasonable men created a system of
rules everyone agreed to follow and
a method to fix things that break: No
God, No King, just by consent of the
governed.
“Our government conceived in freedom
and purchased with blood can be
preserved only by constant vigilance.”
The “if we can keep it part.” was proof
that tryanny was a constant threat not a
trump card.
