Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Our sales and events team took a trip over the bridge into 

Wildwood for lunch last week and visited a frequent vendor for many of 

our Ferry Park events — Wildwoods BBQ. They’re located right on the 

corner of New Jersey and Seventh Avenues in North Wildwood. 

The owners: David Gill and Joel Romano opened their new BBQ 

joint a little over a year ago and have been serving up some top-notch 

BBQ. David and Joel have been the best of friends since meeting in kindergarten 

in their homeland of Australia. The duo followed their own 

culinary paths — David mastering BBQ in the New York City borough 

of Brooklyn and Joel working as the executive chef of a Philadelphia 

restaurant — but came together for their biggest venture yet. 

The vibe: The inside of Wildwood BBQs is full of picnic tables as 

well as outside for additional seating. The walls are covered in personal 

messages from friends, family and customers over their time open. 

Those sweet BBQ smells pour out of the kitchen and will have your 

mouth watering from the moment you walk through the door. Wildwoods 

BBQ also has somewhat of an open concept and you can see a 

little behind-the-scenes action while deciding what to order. From 

brisket and chicken to veggies and mac & cheese, there is something for 

everyone to throw on their tray. 

The food: The events team, Krystina, Jess and Courtney, enjoyed a 

platter of delicious BBQ with a variety of food. They munched on homemade 

hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork, fried cauliflower, potato salad, 

French Fries and beets. Courtney couldn’t resist and even grabbed a 

half of a smoked chicken to take home for later. An impromptu nap 

was added to the schedule following lunch... whoops! It was definitely 

worth every bite. 

The takeaway: Wildwoods BBQ is open daily 12-8pm. They’re a 

great year-round spot for lunch and dinner. David and Joel also offer

feel like this is a good time to point 

out that I picked the Phillies to go to 

the World Series back in March and the 

Eagles to go to the Super Bowl to anyone 

who would listen this summer. Now, 

where do I collect my prize? 

I spent most of the last week in bed 

with a nasty upper-respiratory infection I’ve 

been swapping back and forth with Owen 

and Henry, my two least-favorite kids at the 

moment, so I didn’t have a lot of human interaction 

this week (this is a net win for most 

humans). I’ve also been making my delivery 

run at around 3am these days, so, again, not 

a ton of human contact (another net win for 

humans because I was sick then, too. Cough 

cough). Why the preamble, you may ask? Shut 

up and I’ll tell you, I may answer. It’s my way 

of letting you know that this week’s column 

may be a little light on content involving other 

humans. I mean, it’s always light on content, 

but I’m at least usually able to make someone 

mad most weeks. This week, I’m not so sure. 

So, with that said, welcome to 1200 Words of 

Movie Reviews, Picking Lint from My Belly 

Button and NyQuil Sweats. 

I wore an adult-XXL 1990 Lenny Dykstra 

jersey on Saturday night which is kind of a 

Unicorn because it’s the home white jersey but 

has no pinstripes. I’ve never seen another like 

it. I got it at the Concord Mall for 50 percent 

off because it was a misprint. In the years 

since I’ve been offered $100s for it. Scarcity, 

people. Makes things more valuable. Just wait 

til you see what it does to gasoline in the next 

few months. 

A gentleman I’d never met before 

approached me at EZ to inform me we had 

never met before. But, turns out, we have a 

mutual friend in photographer/cinematographer 

David Swift, with whom I briefly worked 

on the film Exit 0 (no relation) a few years ago. 

It was Howard Isenberg’s first foray into Cape 

May and EZFS so David told him to seek me 

out because I was a nice guy. David is a gifted 

liar. And Howard, it was nice to meet you. 

After the gig, Cath and I popped into 5 

West and, for the first time ever, we were not 

met with sarcastic jabs from local raconteur 

Greg Carpenter. Turns out he was down the 

street celebrating the closing of Harpoon’s on 

the Bay (for the season, not forever). It was… 

fine. The beer was cold, the Tullamore Dew 

had zip, and the non-baseball fan sitting next 

to me endured all my Philly-splaining. But it’s 

just not the same 5 West experience if Greg 

isn’t making fun of me for singing too much 

James Taylor. Alas…

“Yellow & Rose” by, ahem, 

James Taylor and Shawn Colvin. 

How good are these songs? So 

good we’ll be playing them in the 

Terry O’Brien Trio next week. 

Hate Watch of the Week 

Possibly Hate Watch of All-Time: 

Avenue 5 on HBO. It’s trying SO 

HARD to be Veep In Space but 

fails in every conceivable way 

with the lone exception of finding 

ever more cringe-inducing ways 

to work the F-word into every 

line. It’s like Big Sky minus the 

emotional nuance and character 

development. It’s like Grey’s 

Anatomy if everyone was 10x more 

grating which seems impossible, 

I know. It’s like if all the Real 

Housewives were stuck in your 

living room for eight years. It 

makes me miss Saved By the Bell. 

But I watch every episode so… 

congratulations HBO? I guess? 

Comic Book Movie of the 

Week: Black Adam was a perfectly 

enjoyable waste of two hours 

on a Sunday afternoon. I absolutely 

hated the first 20 minutes 

because it did that thing where 

an English-accented voiceover 

explains a bunch of mystical gobbledygook 

no one could possibly 

keep track of, but after that was 

some pretty nifty stuff. It was also 

cool to see big screen versions 

of characters I’ve enjoyed since 

childhood (Hawkman, Dr. Fate). 

Not a classic, not terrible. The 

Rock only ever plays The Rock. 

So, a decent The Rock movie. 

Long-time readers know 

what a fan I am of Mike Flanigan’s 

Netflix series’ (Midnight Mass, 

The Haunting of Hill House and The 

Haunting of Bly Manor which contains 

perhaps my very favorite 

episode of television ever made), 

new-time readers, well, I’m a big 

fan of Mike Flanigan’s Netflix 

series’. His latest, The Midnight 

Club, is probably my least favorite 

of these, but it’s still exceptionally 

good. It has a very Young-Adult 

vibe, which is probably why I 

didn’t LOVE-love it and just likeliked 

it. Also, one of the main 

characters is a mouthy Scottish 

prat, which gave me workplace 

PTSD (ahem, Jack Wright, 

ahem). Still highly recommend. 

I also recommend watching 

The Midnight Club while stoned 

on NyQuil. It’s a story-withina-story 

kind of thing and it gets 

super trippy if you’re dipping in 

and out of consciousness while 

viewing. 

Last Seen Alive is a serviceable 

little kidnap thriller on Netflix in 

the vein of the Taken movies starring 

Gergard Butler who’s ripped, 

which is good. He was rocking the 

Dad Bod in his last few flicks. Dad 

Bods are the domain of smalltown 

magazine columnists, not 

Big-Time Movie Stars. 

How medicated was I all 

week? So medicated I enjoyed the 

hell out of a movie called Jexi starring 

the annoying guy from Pitch 

Perfect about a Siri-like phone 

system that bullies a guy into 

turning his life around. 

Lucky break for you. With 

Elon Musk now in charge of 

Twitter my account is likely to 

be unlocked soon, so most of this 

crap will just go straight there as 

opposed to subjecting you to it 

every week. I’m so jealous. 

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I 

have 27 loads of laundry to do 

and a Netflix queue that ain’t 

gonna clear itself. (Also, queue is 

a 5-letter word for Q. Language, 

man.)

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

The year was 1946. The war and all 

its belt-tightening privations were 

over. Gas rationing was a thing of 

the past and America’s civilians and 

recently decommissioned men and 

women in uniform were ready to get back to 

pre-war pleasures. It was the year the New 

Jersey Audubon Society hosted their first bird 

watching convention in Cape May. Already 

famous as a bird-watching destination, 

North America’s first bird-watching festival 

cemented the Cape’s fame. Featuring famed 

guest presenters and a suite of field trips, the 

“Cape May Autumn Weekend” has become an 

annual tradition that now attracts hundreds 

of birders from around the country and across 

the pond, as well as artists and vendors that 

cater to North America’s second most popular 

outdoor activity. Yes, bird watching. 

Back when I was actively involved in 

the event, the weekend was held in early 

September. But changing migration patterns 

prompted me to switch the dates from 

September to late October when migrating 

birds were more abundant and dependable. 

So, Cape May’s tourist season was extended 

by weeks as more birders planned their visits 

later in the fall. A few attendees were miffed 

about the change, lamenting that it compromised 

beach time for non-birding spouses, 

but the greater wealth of migrating birds later 

in the season was ample compensation and 

it opened the doors to a local bird-watching 

season that now extends into December 

While bird watchers are drawn from 

across the socio-economic strata, a high percentage 

of North America’s 45,000 avid bird 

watchers come from the ranks of “professionals.” 

Physicians and teachers. Best of all, the 

ranks of birders are being filled with young 

birders whose parents are obliged to drive 

them to Cape May for their glorious weekend 

immersion at “the migration mainline.” 

On the hawk watch platform this past 

week I met birders from England, Germany 

and, at times, Australia. Australian visitors 

don’t come to Cape May to lie on our beaches. 

In the eyes of the planet’s millions of birders, 

Cape May is as much an ecotourist destination 

as Costa Rica and East Africa. 

What’s more, the birding season runs 

right through the winter months. Birds like 

Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper are 

not found on the west coast or in America’s 

interior, but in Cape May, making it 12-month 

bird-watching destination. If you are a birder 

living in Toronto, Canada, birding Cape May 

in February is like visiting the tropics.

When my friend and filmmaking 

partner, Jimmy, died suddenly 

over 10 years ago, I adopted his 

mother as my own. That means 

brunches, check-in calls, and 

Mother’s Day cards. Marlene is a retired 

teacher from the Philadelphia public schools. 

When she told me she wasn’t sure about the 

new comedy from ABC, Abbott Elementary, I 

had to check it out. 

Abbot Elementary is set in a Philadelphia 

inner-city public school that lacks the 

resources to properly teach its kids. Our hero 

is Janine, a starry-eyed new teacher played 

by series creator, Quinta Brunson. Janine and 

her colleagues desperately want to make a difference 

for their students. Brunson is a Philly 

native who’s done amazingly well in comedy 

and now television. Big praise goes out to her! 

The show has received rave reviews and 

several Primetime Emmys, and I’m a big fan. 

It’s funny with social commentary that sneaks 

up on you. The characters glance at the camera, 

and there are mock interviews as well. 

The Movie Column 

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

Some may call it a mockumentary sitcom, but 

I call it The Office. Similarities don’t stop there. 

The leader at the school is nearly as cringeworthy 

as The Office’s Michael Scott, whom I 

am not a big fan. My biggest complaint is the 

complete idiocy of his offensive comments 

as well as others around him. There are characters 

who counteract some of that, but the 

absurd things he says are too much for me. 

There are differences in Abbott Elementary. 

The principal, played by Janelle James, 

is a mix of narcissism, cynicism, and shortsightedness. 

She says outlandish things, but 

without the abrasiveness of the Michael Scott 

character. Also, the show’s action revolves 

around teacher Janine, not her principal. The 

result is much more palatable entertainment. 

So why did my adopted mother have such 

an uncertain reaction to Abbott Elementary? 

She taught in that same school system and 

saw the struggles teachers had to face. In 

short, the comedy may hit too close to home, 

and she was unsure it should be joked about. 

But those struggles are real. Some neighborhoods 

have a lower tax base because 

residents don’t make enough money. Their 

schools don’t have the same resources of 

nearby communities as a result, and their 

students struggle to succeed. You could create 

a serious study about it, but would that get 

views? Comedy helps us watch what otherwise 

disgusts us. How will unfair conditions 

change if we can’t face them? Shows like 

Abbott Elementary help us face them.

Marriage has always been about 

more than the happy couple. 

Early Roman weddings required 

10 male witnesses. In feudal 

China, a group of women protected 

the bride as she traveled to her wedding, 

to confuse both earthly bandits after her 

dowry and spiteful demons out to steal her 

happiness. Similarly, the groom’s “best man” 

would be his family’s best swordsman, and 

his other attendants would be ready to fight 

off the bride’s rival suitors. Eighteenth century 

English brides asked their bridesmaids 

to carry bouquets of garlic and herbs to drive 

away evil spirits. Even among these serious 

duties, the wedding party also found time to 

celebrate their soon-to-be-married friends. 

Spartans — not known for their partying 

— toasted the groom before a wedding. 

Germans gathered to break porcelain to bring 

good luck. Irish groomsmen played pranks 

designed to be sure the groom had a sense of 

humor — a helpful tool for marriage. In the 

early 20th century, pre-wedding parties began 

to focus on the groom, with the term “bachelor 

party” first appearing in 1922. “Bachelorette 

party” did not appear in print until 1981. 

Today, both bachelor and bachelorette parties 

are common, with bachelorettes, in particular, 

choosing to celebrate in Cape May. 

Cape May has all the ingredients for 

a successful gathering. Take time for a little 

exercise with a beach walk, a yoga class 

or a trip on the rail bike. Consider relax- 

ing together with a spa day (capemaydayspa. 

com.) Embrace your younger selves with a 

Skeeball contest at the arcade, followed by a 

trip to the Fudge Kitchen. Architecture aficionados 

will enjoy a trolley tour — or, for 

today’s brides, who grew up with Harry Potter, 

the “Spirits and Oddities” tour (capemaymac. 

org). Hire a limousine or a party bus for a trip 

to a winery — Jessie Creek’s tasting spirals are 

perfect for social media (jessiecreekwinery. 

com). History buffs can combine a visit to 

Historic Cold Spring Village with a visit to 

the Cold Spring Brewery, housed in a restored 

1804 barn on the same property (hcsv.org.) 

Nauti Spirits Distillery has more than its cool 

logo — enjoy cocktails made from local botanicals, 

indoor and outdoor games, and music 

(nautispirits.com). 

Plan ahead for transportation if you’re 

going to be drinking — rideshare services 

are unpredictable in town, and the free jitney 

doesn’t run in the off season. Consider walking 

— always the best choice in Cape May, or 

a designated driver.

still thinks he is a puppy and was surrendered 

when he was too active for the children in his 

family. He loves everyone he meets including 

other animals, although he needs a slow introduction. 

Everest is crate trained and would be 

a wonderful pet for a family with large dog 

experience. 

COOPER is an energetic boy who loves to 

splash around in the pool. He has excellent 

leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper 

lived with children previously, but needs to 

be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained 

which will help with his transition. He 

is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered 

and housetrained. 

ROSCOE is a well-mannered boy who came 

to the shelter when his family could no longer 

care for him. He loves people and affection 

from anyone around him. Roscoe enjoys 

walks the most and is learning useful behavior 

cues. He previously lived with children, but a 

quiet household would be a better fit with a 

slow introduction to other cats and dogs.

a little of five that came to the shelter in July 

from a hoarding situation. They were babies 

at the time and needed a lot of TLC to help
