Bird Droppings Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu It is universally known as the Hawk Watch Platform and for over 30 years visitors have been mounting the steps to be awed by one of the planet’s greatest migrations of birds of prey. They are never disappointed because on those rare days when hawks are not flying, it hosts other birds to savor. In November and December its waterfowl — hundreds of ducks pack into Bunker Pond all within easy viewing distance of the platform. Gadwall, a dapper puddle duck dominates. The males don tasteful gray attire, and the females are more elegant than female mallards. Also common are Pintails, with their rakish, flagellum-like tails. American Wigeon make the chill air ring with their comical two-note toot. Northern Shoveler, identified by their out-sized, spatula-shaped bills, are often the duck closest to the platform. Northern Shoveler’s are also the duck most likely to have their heads under water. Last weekend, a drake Wood Duck nearly stole the show. The colorful ducks look like they are dressed for Mardi gras and at the end of the 19th century, it was feared the birds were heading for extinction. It was habitat destruction as much as unregulated hunting that decimated the ranks of Wood Ducks. Cavity nesters, often nesting hundreds of yards from water, the felling of southern forests almost spelled the end for this duck. Responding well to artificial boxes, today the planet’s greatest density of breeding Wood Ducks are found in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in North Jersey. And we can’t forget about geese. With Canada Geese abound, we in these goose-rich times forget that 60 years ago, Canada Goose was a rare treat. A flock of geese passing overhead would stop people in their tracks. And it was special, a sound like dogs barking but growing louder, coming on. I still thrill to the sound of migrating geese but confess that my sentimental favorite is the sound of migrating Tundra Swans. Heralding from the Arctic, heading for Currituck Sound where the birds gather by the tens of thousands. We in Cape May are often treated to a big push of Tundra Swans around Thanksgiving. Hated by game management engineers, beloved by a near militant band of swan lovers, perhaps no North American bird is the target of such dueling regard. I like them. I’m particularly taken by the way non-birders take to them. On the hawk watch platform, loaner Swarovski spotting scopes seem ever trained on the swans in Bunker Pond.
