Valentine’s Day in the UK
February 14th is a day to celebrate love all over the world. In Britain it is one of the most
romantic days of the year. How do British people celebrate Valentine’s Day?
1) Many people send a Valentine’s card. This tradition started over a century ago. If you have
a lover you can give cards to each other. But it is also a tradition to send a secret card to
someone you are in love with. It is great fun, but can also be a bit of an embarrassment to
find out who sent a card and who has a secret crush. The Valentine’s Day card often has
hearts or doves on them, or sometimes an angel, Cupid.
2) February 14th is also a day for giving presents. Many lovers give chocolates or flowers to the
one they love. There are many websites where you can find advice on which Valentine’s present
to buy. Popular presents are red roses, a box of chocolates, romantic songs, a phone, jewellery,
a photo frame or perfume.
3) If you want something more original, think of a helicopter flight, a balloon ride, the chance to test-drive a Ferrari or an all-day
session at a health club. Other people feel that Valentine’s Day is just a way to boost the economy. For true
romantics, the gift of love is enough. Valentine’s Day is a popular day to either propose or get married – you’d never forget your
wedding anniversary!

“My boyfriend sent me a text message on Valentine’s Day.
I suppose that’s kind of romantic but I would have liked a present or even a real card better.”

Trash can basketball
Let’s see how well you know your vocabulary by playing

Voor de docent
Met dit materiaal kun je de leerlingen op een leuke manier leren over Valentijnsdag door
middel van (bijv.) met een leesopdracht en een spreekopdracht (speeddaten).
Uitleg en tips opdrachten
Task 1 Before reading
Deze opdracht is bedoeld om de keywords uit de tekst te verhelderen voor de
leerlingen. De leerling zoekt (evt. in tweetallen) het juiste plaatje bij het keyword. Wil je
de opdracht uitbreiden? Laat de leerlingen ook de vertaling opzoeken en/of er een zin
mee bedenken.
Task 2 Skim the text
Bij deze opdracht ligt de focus op pre-reading. Door dit met regelmaat aan te bieden
help je leerlingen om zich goed voor te bereiden op het lezen en informatie en
voorkennis over een tekst op te halen. Door hier in klas 1 al mee te beginnen, leg je een
stevig fundament voor begrijpend lezen.
TIP!
Bespreek task 1 en 2 indien gewenst voordat je de leerlingen aan de slag zet met de
vragen over de tekst in task 3.
Task 3A-C Questions
Deze opdracht bestaat uit drie delen. De eerste vraag betreft een grid. Help de
leerlingen door ze erop te wijzen dat grid-vragen eigenlijk bestaan uit losse vragen en
ze elk apart beantwoord moeten worden.
Bij 3B. kun je leerlingen ondersteunen door ze een (online) woordenboek te geven.
Task 4 Valentine speed date
Bij deze opdracht gaan leerlingen op zoek naar de beste match voor het aan hun
toegewezen profiel, door vragen te stellen. Deel de bijlage uit en geef aan dat de
leerlingen hun profiel voor zichzelf moeten houden. Ze kunnen de gegevens van hun
profiel in de grid bij A invullen.
Bij task B kunnen de leerlingen eerst de vragen voorbereiden die ze nodig hebben
tijdens de speed date. Als je dit onderdeel sneller wilt afronden, laat de leerlingen dan
in tweetallen werken. Zorg eerst voor een klassikale terugkoppeling zodat iedereen de
zinnen juist heeft voor ze ermee aan het oefenen gaan.
Task C is de daadwerkelijke speed-date. Zet er goed de vaart in en stel een tijdslimiet in
zodat je tijd hebt voor onderdeel D.
Bij task D worden de droomkoppels gepresenteerd. Wie is de beste match voor elke
leerling?
In de bijlage vind je een hand-out met kaartjes waar de datingprofielen op staan en het
formulier waar leerlingen hun matches kunnen noteren. Het is handig om de kaartjes
met datingprofielen voor de les te printen en knippen.
Task 5 & 6
Heb je tijd over? Geef de leerlingen de word search en/of speel trash can basketball.
