Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team were chowing on this week
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: 5 West Pub on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. They
are run by the Negro family, the same masterminds behind Tisha’s on
the Washington Street Mall.
The vibe: It was the heat of dinner time this past Sunday, but we

seated rather quickly. You’d think the first Sunday following the Super
Bowl would be quiet, but not at this local spot. The bar was full of people
catching the end of the Daytona 500 — Ricky Stenhouse Jr. took the
win in what was apparently a wild overtime finish. We were clueless,
but good for him... catch us more invested when baseball returns in
March. Nicole had her eyes on the Alabama vs Florida State softball
game on another TV so not a total sports-free Sunday night. Even so,
there’s a lot to see at 5 West with their open kitchen allowing for some
behind-the-scenes action. We could see every time our food was ready
in the window which was as exciting as ever.
The food: Speaking of food in the window, we ate quite good
this evening. Dan and Nicole just spent a weekend skiing and snowboarding,
so after a very active weekend and hours in the car we had
an appetite. We started with some Buffalo wings which prompted the
longtime debate of flats vs drums. Lucky for us, the result was exactly
what anyone in a relationship would hope for — Nicole is for flats and
Dan stands by drums all the way. A match made in heaven. For dinner,
Nicole was craving pizza and went for the Americana pie and Dan opted
for the Italian pork sandwich with tater tots. Good, hearty bar food and
we enjoyed every bite.
The takeaway: 5 West Pub is great for lunch or dinner, a few beers
and it’s where you want to be during any sports’ season. They’re big on
football and baseball specials PLUS they’re open year-round. 5 West
has a lot of fun to look forward to, including the North Cape May Shamrock
Shuttle! They’ve partnered with Exit Zero Ferry Station, Red Brick
Ale House and Nauti Spirits for a St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl via Jitney

As temperatures warm, home owners
begin to wonder when they can
stop feeding birds. The answer is”
“not yet.” Until new growth begins
to pop, nature’s food stocks are at
their lowest, having depleted over the winter.
Birds are also deep in the process of getting fit
for the breeding season ahead. Many will be
migrating, some are replacing feathers. This
is an energetically expensive effort.
Yes, I know, you are way over on your bird
seed budget, but now is not the time to shortchange
your minions. Except for cost, there
is no reason not to continue feeding birds
through the warmer months. You may want
to clean your feeders more often in warm
weather. A water and vinegar solution is great
for tube feeders but soap and water followed
by a good rinse works, too. Speaking of rinsing,
birds are attracted to bird baths. These
are cheap and easy to maintain. Put them in
a shady spot to reduce evaporation and don’t
overfill — half an inch of water is plenty.
Hummingbirds arrive in late April. Don’t

start feeding them unless you resolve to
replace the sugar water every other day. Sugar
water ferments and hummingbirds don’t need
a snoot full.
Cut the cost of bird seed by hanging feeders
where squirrels can’t reach them and use
exclusionary feeders with small perches to
discourage pigeons. Avoid seed mixes with
cracked corn. Most birds will sweep it aside to
get to the good stuff like black oil, sunflower
seed and millet. Suet is great for woodpeckers,
nuthatches and chickadees.
Thistle? Goldfinches love it but your budget
may not. If you let a corner of your property
go native, thistle will probably sprout
naturally and come July, you’ll be treated to
goldfinches plucking thistle down to line their
nests, not to mention milkweed — host plant
for monarch butterflies.
One thing your love of birds should not
do is extend to feeding gulls. Gulls become
habituated to handouts and become a nuisance.
There is plenty of natural food in the
ocean and gulls are specialized to secure it.
So why is it ok to feed birds in your
yard but not gulls on the boardwalk? Because
White-throated Sparrows don’t mob you
when you step outside. These northern
breeding sparrows will be gone by late April
so enjoy them while you can. But don’t worry.
Cardinals are here year-round. They probably
nest in your yard, but typically just one pair
per yard. No, they don’t use bird houses but
that tangled forsythia sure looks good.

The legendary story is nearly a century-and-a-half
old, so you could say
it can stand on its own two feet. And
you know I’m telling the truth... my
nose isn’t growing. Oscar has nominated
the latest telling of this tale. Guillermo
del Toro’s Pinocchio features the world’s most
famous marionette puppet (maybe the only
without strings). He’s the toy that yearned
to become a real boy, and the movie is up for
Best Animated Feature. I wanted to love this
film and ended up both liking and admiring it.
The fundamental elements are familiar,
but del Toro’s telling has new twists that give
it bite. First, it’s set in war-torn Italy complete
with Mussolini. It’s also told with a
gutsy, stop-action vibe that smacks of Wes
Anderson. Frankly, its start was underwhelming.
There were songs that were uninspired
and didn’t fit so well. But the story unfolded
much better than that. This Pinocchio means
something different to everyone — a performer,
a soldier, a celebrity, a son. And he
dies a lot (but comes back… long story).
Thankfully as the show progresses, the
musical interludes are abruptly cut off (good
comedy). The tone becomes darker but never
loses hope. And Pinocchio himself is charming
albeit in a slightly odd way. Certainly,
Hollywood A-listers came out to support the
project. Ewan McGregor plays the cricket (not
named Jiminy), Harry Potter’s David Bradley is
Geppetto, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, and
Tilda Swinton offer their voices. Christoph
Waltz, one of my favorites, plays the nefarious
“Count Volpe,” who “persuades” Pinocchio
to join his carnival show. Gregory Mann, a
relative newcomer, gives a spirited lead performance.
What impressed me most is this was not
a rehashing of the familiar. For that, catch
the Tom Hanks live-action version put out
by Disney earlier in 2022. That movie tanked
with critics and audiences and got no love
from the Academy (got many Razzie Awards
though — not good news!). I only heard about
it while researching for this review.
Del Toro is becoming Hollywood magic.
With six Oscar nominations so far and two
wins, his brand of quirky is getting some
serious consideration from the mainstream
and now streaming. This visually stunning
work gives us fresh and deeper insights into
the beloved classic, no strings attached. First

In 1972, a little girl named Maria Pepe
earned a spot on the pitching roster of
a Hoboken, New Jersey Little League
team. She played three games before
Little League Baseball threatened to take
away her team’s charter. She and her family
sued, but by the time the courts required Little
League Baseball to let girls play, Maria was
14 — too old. Because of her, an estimated five
million girls had the chance to play ball.
Trailblazers like Maria Pepe, and Title IX,
have increased girls’ participation in sports
by a factor of 10 — 300,000 high school girls
participated in 1972, and 3 million participated
in 2012. Still, there are old-fashioned
thinkers who assert that girls aren’t really
interested in sports. In reality, the idea that
women shouldn’t compete is recent. Women
in ancient Greece competed in foot races and
equestrian events, and Spartan women wrestled
and threw javelin and discus. Men in
the Victorian era sought to restrict women’s
athleticism with myths about female athletes
damaging their reproductive organs, or —
gasp — making them unattractive to men. The
proper Victorian woman was too delicate for
anything strenuous — unless she was carrying
pails of water up three flights of stairs.
Girls have always loved to play. When
baseball was new, American girls fell in love
with the game just like boys. Vassar College,
a women’s college, had an organized baseball
team in 1866. Vassar’s founder believed that
exercise was essential to academic rigor, and
baseball became a part of the school’s physical
education program, with students competing
against women from other schools. Miss
Porter’s School for Girls, an elite prep school,
had a team, and many towns formed women’s
leagues. Black women were excluded, so they
formed their own teams, and the first woman
inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame was
Effa Manley, a civil rights activist who owned
the Newark Bears of the Negro Leagues.

Women in Baseball” at the Carroll Gallery,
located in the Carriage House of the Emlen
Physick Estate, co-presented by MAC, the
Center for Community Arts and the Cape
May Negro League. Learn how women participated
and often excelled, from the story
of Mamie “Peanut” Johnson in 1953 to Little
Leaguer Mo’Ne Davis in 2014.
The exhibit continues through Sunday,
March 26. Admission is free, and the building

and tried to make amends with a big tip, but
she is getting worse. I’m thinking that we
should just start meeting in our homes, but I
don’t know how to put it so I don’t offend her.
I don’t want to lose her friendship. Except for
this one issue, she is really a wonderful person.

What kind of person treats a server, who
can’t fight back, badly? You can fight for them.
The next time she is rude, tell her at the table.
Most bullies back down when confronted.

I want to have a psychic come to my
wedding shower. I’ve already told my maid
of honor and she’s on it. The problem is a
certain fraction of my fiancé’s family are very
religious and may be offended. Do I have a
separate shower? Do I tell them ahead of time
and let the chips fall where they may? I am a
believer in such things, but I want it to be just
a bit of fun. I also don’t want a rift even before
the vows are exchanged. On another matter,
I don’t want to bore everyone with opening
gifts for an hour. Is there a middle ground
anywhere? I am having it catered by George’s
so I know at least the food will make everyone

— this is ecologically sound and a blessing for
attendees who hate wrapping. Display them

the yard and climbing up on a lap. Bear would
