IVRUPDATE Training – Can You Afford Not To Training presents a prime opportunity to expand the knowledge base of employees, but many employers will say that training is expensive. There are also the hidden costs of employees being out of the workplace while attending training. Despite the potential drawbacks, training and development provides both the company as a whole and the individual employees with benefits that make the cost and time a worthwhile investment. Improved Employee Performance In the recovery environment poorly trained or untrained staff can cause significant risk to themselves and others. An employee who receives the necessary training is armed with the tools to perform the job as safely and as efficiently as possible. The training may also build the employee’s confidence with a stronger understanding of the responsibilities of the job and their role. Safely moving vehicles without damage or additional damage is the aim of any recovery and of financial benefit to the company. Employees who are competent and on top of industry standards help the company hold a position as a strong competitor within the industry. Provision of the necessary training creates an overall knowledgeable staff but there are softer benefits such as it can make an employee feel more valued and it can be a way of meeting other staff members, especially if you are a new employee. IVRUPDATE PUWER Regulation 9 states that: Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment (or who supervises or manages the use of work equipment) have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken. There are many other health and safety regulations that also apply to the rescue and recovery industry but it is clear that health and safety training is not an option, it is the law. Staff Turnover It is well known that the industry has a high staff turnover. Perhaps the biggest frustration for a VRO paying for training for someone who is going to leave. Consider the words of Henry Ford, “The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay.” The NHSS17/17B National Training Scheme, administered by IVR (UK) allows the individual’s training to be recognised across the scheme regardless of who an employee is working for because it means that should an employee move on, the standard and the content of their training is structured and consistent across the board. Operator training records are also held by the IVR on the central scheme database, (the professional register for rescue and recovery). If you are fortunate enough to take on a pre-trained employee this can remove the need to invest in retraining a new starter. Employee Responsibility and Employer Protection Once an employee is trained they cannot un-know what they know. In other words, training puts greater responsibility for their own health and safety and the health and safety of those around them onto the employee – because they now know how to perform a particular skill safely and correctly and if they have been taught to do it through a traceable scheme such as the scheme the IVR manages, it can be proven. Relevant Training The advantage of IVR training is that it has been developed by industry subject matter experts, those that understand the nuances of rescue and recovery and often have approximately 30-40 years in-industry experience, whilst still operating today. EV training is a prime example of the importance of knowing the industry you are training in. When EVs took centre stage, many commercial entities were delivering a high voltage disconnect to operators. They were also encouraged to use a pole to remove a person who has been electrocuted by the vehicle, as most operators work alone and on the roadside, in most cases neither of these options is viable or relevant. In fact, there are many reasons to not do a high voltage disconnect, especially in vehicles involved in crime. An instructor with industry knowledge is key. High Quality Training The IVR’s remit is the safety of the operator at the side of the road or in the yard. It believes that without the work that the IVR does through the scheme on providing high quality courses, through approved instructors, has undoubtedly saved lives. The question is what does high quality training look like. This will be different for different industries. Some people may learn best in a classroom or by working through training online at their own pace. The IVR looks at the audience and works backwards. It looks at those technicians who are used to working practically, being outside and using their hands. Almost all IVR training is practical, outside and hands on to complement the audience it serves. When face to face, instructors have a good idea of facial expressions and body language and so are able to adjust the pace of the training or to give extra support where necessary. As an employer you have peace of mind knowing that the skills assessments are based on the employee practically performing the skill they have learned in training. If they can’t perform the skill against the set criteria, they will not pass. Their underlining knowledge is also tested in a theory test paper. Although there is temptation to train more, to train quicker, to train without travelling, that would be cutting a professional corner by lowering the standards that the IVR and the accreditation bodies the IVR aligns itself to set. Lowering the standards would take us away from our remit of keeping the man safe on the side of the road. Can you afford not to? In every industry HR and training are overheads to the business, they do not seem to have a direct impact on ‘making a sale’. It is often the first thing where investment is trimmed when an organisation’s finances are tight. health and safety training should never be seen as an after-thought, but rather as an effective and logical step to ensure good, safe and ethical business standards.
