PEOPLE Behind the Scenes with… David Donald A day in the life with Splash and Tickle’s David Donald at the Otherlands Festival in Perth I OVERSEE all aspects of Splash and Tickle and have been involved in delivering mobile spas to events throughout the UK and Europe since 2004. Our modular system was the first of its kind anywhere in the world and we have had the pleasure of working with a huge variety of clients over the years. My time is spent approximately 40% in our London co-working space or home office near Brighton, and 60% on-site at events or visiting clients for meetings and site visits. In this article I’ll share a behind the scenes look at our provision of the Wellness Sanctuary at the Otherlands Music and Arts Festival at Scone Palace in Perth, Scotland. As you can imagine, a huge amount of work is involved in preparing for a festival before the event takes place. My team and I arrive at Otherlands having already spent several days planning logistics and transporting equipment and staff to the venue. We then have the mammoth task of setting up before the festivalgoers arrive. Our first task is to unload and set out the main spa components, including our Mobile Deck all weather flooring system, woodfired hot tubs, saunas and bell tents, and to ensure that our power and water supplies are in place. We always factor in a time buffer for weather and traffic delays, so if things go smoothly then I can treat the crew to a pint or two in the evening! On show day I’m up at around 6am. I will immediately start thinking about the plan for the day, getting myself and my crew back on site in time and liaising with the event production team, as well as anticipating potential problems and preventing them from happening, rather than having to react to them! I am 100% focused on ensuring that everything is ready for when the doors open. Once on site I will immediately check all equipment and have my crew set about their tasks while I carry out crucial water hygiene checks to ensure that guests can enjoy our spa facilities, which include pools and hot tubs, in complete safety. We always have a BISHTA trained supervisor overseeing water hygiene and follow a rigorous test and treat procedure using the latest electronic photometer testing equipment. We also have a secret weapon! Our Hydro Heater allows us to heat our hot tubs in under an hour rather than the usual 15-20 hours. This is a critical piece of equipment when working to tight deadlines and carrying out overnight water changes – it’s obviously essential that our hot tubs are hot! WWW.OPENAIRBUSINESS.COM 65
