joining forces AFD, Forgotten Harvest unite to combat hunger The Associated Food Dealers has teamed up with the nation’s third-largest food rescue organization to help feed hungry local residents. Southfield-based Forgotten Harvest, formed in 1990, currently rescues 5.7 million pounds of food per year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from a variety of sources such as grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources. The AFD is encouraging its members to donate their unsold but still usable food to Forgotten Harvest. “For years we have been working with Forgotten Harvest with our trade shows, donating the leftover food and beverages vendors are willing to disburse,” said AFD President Mike Sarafa. “Now we are taking it to the next level, connecting our supermarket members with perishable BY JOYCE WISWELL items that are still consumable, but not kept any longer on the shelves.” Not only are store owners helping to combat hunger, they are also helping their own bottom line. The donated food is a tax deduction and means less trash that must be hauled away. Companies can donate food on a regular basis or only when a surplus emerges. Susan Ellis Goodell, Forgotten Harvest’s executive director, is excited about signing AFD members up. “The AFD has such a large membership that has so many resources in the food community, this could have a tremendous impact on our ability to feed hungry people,” she said. Sarafa said the AFD’s membership includes a few hundred supermarkets. In Southeast Michigan, about half of these are Chaldean-owned, he said. Forgotten Harvest delivers the donated food free of charge to 109 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area. The agency — the only one in the tri-county area that provides perishables — has an annual budget of $1 million (not counting the $9 million worth of donated food) and a staff of 24. Volunteers to help drive Forgotten Harvest’s fleet of 16 refrigerated box trucks are also sought. “We would love to have a volunteer each day to do the pickups and help move the food that much faster,” Goodell said. Forgotten Harvest also needs volunteers with connections to the food industry to serve on its Food Committee. “It’s very hard for us to get in the door,” Goodell said, “but once we have an introduction, people just love our mission.” Concerns about the liability of a company that donates food diminished in 1996 with the passage of the U.S. congressional Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. The act protects good-faith food donors from civil and criminal liability should the product later cause harm to the recipient. Goodell is looking forward to supplying more food to the hungry via AFD members. “I am so grateful to the AFD,” she said, “for building this partnership with us.” Grocers and others interested in setting up a food donation schedule can call Forgotten Harvest at (248) 350-3663.
