the gift of life Chaldean bone marrow donors desperately needed BY JOYCE WISWELL Life can change in an instant. Just ask Tasia Yaldo, who received the devastating diagnosis of leukemia in August. The 12-year-old had been feeling unwell all summer, suffering on and off from vomiting, a sore throat and weakness in her legs. After several visits to the doctor, the reason was found — leukemia, a cancer of the blood. “I knew from the look on the doctor’s face he would tell me leukemia,” said Tasia’s mother, Ban. “And hearing she has both kinds [acute lymphocytic and acute myeloid] made me even more afraid.” Tasia is currently undergoing chemotherapy, but that is only a short-term fix. To be cured, she needs a bone marrow transplant. None of her immediate family is a match, so the Yaldos are asking the Chaldean community at large for help. Chaldeans and other minorities are not as easily matched for bone marrow as American Caucasians. That is because tissue type is inherited, and not a lot of Chaldeans are registered as donors. The same problem is true for other minorities and ethnic groups such as African Americans, American Indians, Asians, Hawaiians and Hispanics. The Yaldo family is holding a bone marrow drive with the American Red Cross on November 13 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church. “This is the only way I can help my daughter,” said Ban. “And I want everyone in the future to be helped too, not just Tasia.” A simple blood test determines BONE MARROW BLOOD DRIVE Sunday, November 13 10 a.m.-5 p.m. St. Thomas Chaldean Catholic Church 6900 Maple Road, West Bloomfield The simple blood test takes only about 15 minutes. A fee of $65 is payable to the Red Cross and is tax deductible. If you are a match, you will be contacted by the National Bone Marrow Donor Program. A second drive may be held on November 20 at Mother of God Church in Southfield; call the church at (248) 356-0565 for confirmation. Tasia Yaldo needs a bone marrow transplant, but none of her family is a match. if someone is a bone marrow match for a person who needs the transplant. If a prospective donor does match and agrees to go forward, the marrow is withdrawn via a needle from the pelvic bones, a procedure done in the hospital under anesthesia. Donors generally don’t suffer except for some soreness in that area for a few days. The bone marrow test costs $65, a fact that makes Ban Yaldo uncomfortable. “It’s a donation to the Red Cross,” she said. “I hope people remember that November is the month of giving.” While she waits to find a live-saving marrow match, Tasia continues on as best she can. The chemotherapy leaves her too weak to attend her seventh grade classes at Meadowbrook Middle School in the Walled Lake District, so a teacher visits her house to keep her caught up. Despite everything, her spirits remain high. “She’s taking it so well,” said Ban. “I’m so proud of her.” 38 CHALDEAN NEWS NOVEMBER 2005
