in good HEALTH Tis the Season: Should you get a flu shot? BY CHRISTINA GAPPY Flu season has arrived once again throughout the Metro Detroit area and with it comes the old question — should you get a flu shot? As most of us have experienced, the flu can generally be characterized by symptoms of fever, chest discomfort, aches and pains and even extreme exhaustion. Many people choose to receive a yearly flu shot to reduce their chances of getting the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide guidelines all people should be familiar with before making a decision. Q: What is the flu shot? A: The flu shot is a vaccine that contains killed viruses. It is usually inserted with a needle in the arm of the patient. Q: Who should get the flu shot? A: For the 2005-06 flu season, experts expect at least 71 million doses to be available. However, it was highly recommended that only people at highest risk of obtaining the flu or at highest risk of complications as a result of the flu receive this vaccine by October 24, 2005. Now that that date has passed, all people can obtain the flu shot. Those considered particularly at risk include: • People 65 years and older • People who live in long-term care facilities that house those with long-term illnesses • Adults and children 6 months and older with chronic heart or lung conditions, including asthma, who need regular medical care or were in a hospital during the previous year because of a metabolic disease (like diabetes), chronic kidney disease, or weakened immune system (including immune system problems caused by medicines or by infection with HIV/AIDS) • Children 6 months to 18 years who are on longterm aspirin therapy. (Children given aspirin while they have influenza are at risk of Reye syndrome, a deadly brain and liver disease in children.) • Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season • All children 6 to 23 months of age • People with any condition that can compromise respiratory function or the handling of respiratory secretions (this is a condition that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, such as brain injury or disease, spinal cord injuries, seizure disorders or other nerve or muscle disorders). • health-care personnel who provide direct patient care • household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age Q: Who should not get a flu shot? A: All patients should speak to a doctor before getting the vaccine. Those who have had an allergic reaction to a previous flu shot should not get it. Sanan Hanna is an example of this. For two days immediately after he got the shot, he was sick with fever and other allergy symptoms. “I regret getting the flu shot,” Hanna said. “I will never even think of getting it again!” If you are sick after obtaining the flu shot, speak to your doctor or nurse immediately. However, Hanna is an exception and almost all of the people who receive the flu shot have no serious problems from it. People at risk for an allergic reaction are those who are allergic to eggs because the vaccine is made from hen’s eggs. Q: How effective is the flu shot? A: The vaccine prevents the flu in about 70-90 percent of the healthy patients under age 65. The flu shot is 30-70 percent effective among the elderly, preventing severe illness, secondary complications, hospitalization and even death. Matti Diza has been receiving this vaccination for three years and is very satisfied with the results. Diza is in his early 70s and has not yet experienced any flulike symptoms since he first got the shot. If you cannot obtain the flu vaccine from your doctor, visit your local drug store such as CVS or Walgreen’s to obtain more information on their administration of flu shots.
