Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: El Pueblo Taqueria in North Cape May. This is the first 

of two locations — the restaurant’s Beach Avenue spot in Cape May 

opened in 2021. 

The food: Everyone was ready for lunch by 11am last Thursday and 

Courtney was traveling to the Filling Station from Ferry Park — a perfect 

opportunity to have her pick up lunch! Jack and Katie both went for their 

usual — chicken rice bowls complete with refried beans, queso fresco, 

corn, tomatoes, avocado and quajillo crema. Courtney did the same but 

added a fried egg plus their verde sauce... she has quite an addiction to 

the spicy green salsa. Kayla enjoyed what she called “the best quesadilla 

she’s ever had.” It was packed with chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato 

and avocado giving it tons of flavor. She made sure to report back to El 

Pueblo via their online ordering system. 

The dessert temptation: Just a few shops down from El Pueblo is 

owner Ruben’s brother G’s place, Antojos. The convenient location 

alone is tempting. They’ve got all the sweet “Mexican cravings” you 

dream of. Crepes, acai bowls, mango chamoyada, smoothies, churros 

and concha ice cream sandwiches. Courtney was just about to stop by to 

pick up some churros but decided to skip it this time. Have we stopped 

thinking about the churros paired with chocolate dipping sauce since? 

Not even a little bit. We did curb our sweet tooth with a couple snickers 

bars and Reese’s cups, but we won’t make the mistake of skipping the 

churros ever again. 

The takeaway: El Pueblo is a go-to lunch spot. They’re open yearround, 

super consistent and Ruben is a great guy who we love to support. 

And with our travels back and forth from Cape May and North 

Cape May, it’s a no brainer to grab a hefty rice bowl for lunch. El Pueblo 

in North Cape May is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11am to 9pm. Their 

Beach Avenue location is opening for the season in a couple weeks so 

keep an eye on their socials for updated hours. We will be, specifically 

to try the “best quesadilla ever” that Kayla hasn’t stopped talking about.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

One of the summer delights of our 

Bayshore town are the hosts of 

Chimney Swifts that fill the air with 

their excited chittering and cookie-cutter 

patterns in the sky. Born 

to fly, their natural environment some might 

say is open sky as the birds land only to 

roost and nest. The cigar-shaped bodies are 

designed to reduce drag, the slender bladeshaped 

wings develop forward thrust on the 

up-stroke as well as the downstroke, a faculty 

they share with hummingbirds. 

Swifts consume large flying insects which 

they engulf with their short-wide bills. Stiff 

bristles on the face protect the bird’s eyes. 

Our eastern Swift, the Chimney Swift, once 

nested in hollow trees. After Europeans began 

erecting homes, the birds discovered another 

attractive foundation for their nests, the 

inside walls of seasonally dormant chimneys. 

Sadly, the North American population 

of Chaetura pelagica has declined by 67% in 

the last 50 years, making the birds you see 

over Cape May all the more special. The cause 

of the decline probably relates to the global 

decline of aerial insects but may also be linked 

to reduced numbers of chimneys as home 

builders switch to more efficient heating systems. 

In winter the birds retreat to the skies 

over the Amazon Basin, which they may reach 

in a single migratory flight. A close cousin, the 

Common Swift of Europe is known to sleep 

on the wing. But May through September, 

Chimney Swift is part of our summer dowery. 

Not much to look at, the soot-colored 

birds leave the flashy attire to the swallows 

that also share the summer skies with swifts. 

But swallows have tails and many flash iridescent 

backs. Blue-green for Tree Swallow, 

deep blue for the nine-tailed Barn Swallow, 

purple onto black for the male Purple Martin. 

All these species can be seen at Cape May 

Point State Park where the birds often fly low 

over bunker pond’s slurping up water with 

skimming bills. Chasing aerial prey like beetles, 

ants, and wasps is a thirst-inducing line 

of work. Another swallow you might watch 

for is the brown-backed Northern Roughwinged 

Swallow which sometimes nests in 

the World War 2 bunker. 

But in this age of this world, we savor 

what we have. Tree Swallows which nest in 

bluebird boxes, Barn Swallows which nest on 

your porch and Purple Martins which nest 

colonially in Purple Martin apartments are 

still common and add a touch of flash and 

dash to our summer skies as they scoop up 

prey.

In a galaxy not so far away, the debate 

over Star Wars vs Star Trek rages on. You 

have heard from the editor of this column 

on his point of view. Now, it is my 

responsibility as a Star Wars fan to refute 

his claim that Star Trek is superior. 

To start, please note for the record that 

my opponent presented his “side,” weak and 

“dark” as it was, in the May 4th edition of this 

magazine. What a slap in the face! A mockery! 

Was he picking his fight like a Sith bully on a 

Jedi playground? Would he even know what 

that means? 

It was obvious I needed to understand 

his argument to truly grasp the gravity of 

this debate. So, I watched all of the Star Trek 

films starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and 

researched some of the older movies and TV 

Shows. Whether it is confirmation bias or 

something else out of this world, I still believe 

that Star Wars is simply the stronger franchise. 

Let us take a step back and ask ourselves 

what does Star Wars have that Star Trek does 

not? No matter your allegiance, we can all

agree that Darth Vader is the best antagonist 

in the history of science fiction. Who from Star 

Trek can compete against him? Khan? General 

Chang? Kruge? None of these characters have 

the gravitas of Darth Vader. 

Aside from Darth Vader, there are many 

other intimidating villains that command 

your attention — Darth Maul, the Emperor/ 

Darth Sideous, General Grievous, Grand 

Admiral Thrawn, Count Dooku, and Cad 

Bane. Unlike Star Trek, all of these villains are 

interconnected to a larger theme. 

And what is that theme? Hope. This 

seemingly simple, yet powerful, theme is evident 

in every film, book, video game, and television 

show. Even in films where the heroes 

do not win like Revenge of the Sith, The Empire 

Strikes Back, and The Last Jedi, light can be found 

in the darkness. Even if it seems the Dark Side 

seems to win, there is always hope for a better 

tomorrow. That theme comforts an audience 

needing the escape to a world filled with hope 

and wonder. 

Lastly, lightsabers and the idea of a 

mystical Force make this franchise all the 

more compelling. Oh, and let me borrow my 

opponent’s argument. Star Wars is valued at 

$50 billion vs $10 billion for Star Trek. ‘Nuff 

said! Yeah, I’m counting after the first billion. 

That’s sort of a thing in finance.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, book a cycle cruise! 

Remember those pedal boats you and 

your sister begged to rent at a campground 

on vacation? You’d start out 

strong and be exhausted by the time 

you reached the middle of the lake, 

then you’d struggle a bit pedaling back to the 

dock. There were secret conversations and 

a bit of privacy in the midst of a family trip. 

There was probably a lot of giggling involved. 

Why not get that feeling as an adult? 

Pedal boats, or pedalos, have been popular 

in resort areas since the early 20th century. 

They were a hit on the French Riviera 

in the 1920s before yacht maker George H. 

Townsend began to manufacture them in the 

United States, when the Great Depression 

nearly killed his business. A 1939 trial at New 

York’s Jones Beach proved there was a market. 

Since then, you see them shaped like swans, 

dragons or flamingos, or disguised as sleek 

wooden racing vessels. Some are designed for 

solo riders and because they are so quiet, are 

often used for fishing. A cycle cruise is not 

quiet — it’s like a noisy pub you can paddle. 

The cycle cruise is a pontoon boat with a 

paddle wheel and about 10 stations for pedaling. 

Pedaling is optional — there is a motor 

for backup. Schedule a private cruise with up 

to 20 people, taking turns pedaling. Bachelor 

and bachelorette parties are popular, but so 

are family-friendly outings. Children are welcome, 

accompanied by an adult. I’m hoping 

our family will give this a try — think of 

the low-stress, multigenerational conversa- 

tions you can have while you’re looking for 

ospreys as music plays in the background. 

They provide coolers with ice, so bring snacks. 

Charcuterie boards and fruit trays are popular, 

but sandwiches or pizza might be easier to 

handle — it is a boat, after all. Bring drinks 

in cans or plastic bottles and include water 

— you may work up a sweat. No hard liquor 

is allowed. 

If your group is small, join a public cruise, 

which accommodates 8 to 16 passengers. If 

you have gym rats in the crowd, you can ask 

the operator to adjust the paddle to make 

pedaling more challenging. Tickets are about 

$60 per person, and you are expected to tip the 

crew. There is no smoking on board. The boats 

operate rain or shine, so dress for the weather. 

There is a canopy over the boat to keep you 

dry if it rains, but cruises may be canceled 

due to severe weather. Check out their “out 

of towner” insurance policy before booking. 

Wear shoes that let you pedal. Don’t forget 

sunscreen. There is a bathroom on board.

died earlier this week. She was 12 years old, and 

the end came suddenly, or so we thought. We 

realize now, we misunderstood the limp she 

developed. We have three young devastated 

children. My wife and I are beside ourselves 

and don’t know how to handle it. Please share

four-legged friends strikes right to the heart in 

a way in which we are left helpless. This is your 

children’s first experience with the life cycle, it 

is therefore important not to underestimate

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

to be concerned. We recommend two courses 

of action. First, celebrate the well-loved life 

of “Daisy” at a family dinner at Harbor View. 

Bring photos, Facebook posts and maybe even 

a beloved toy and share your happy memories 

of “Daisy.” Second, talk to the kids about 

finding a new furry friend. If they are ok with 

it, take them to Animal Outreach and choose 

your new addition as a family, but always be 

mindful that “Daisy” will not be forgotten.

My husband loves Facebook, to the point 

where he posts nearly every aspect of our life. I 

burnt the roast. The cat looked at me and peed 

on my side of the bed. My dress was too tight 

and split as I climbed out of the car. I ran out 

of gas and had to have the car towed. I have 

begged him to keep these daily miseries to 

himself, but he finds them all hysterical and 

thinks others will, too. I swear he is hoping to 

be “discovered” by a TV producer who will buy 

the rights to my mishaps, with him as the head 

writer. What can I do to stop him? — Red Faced 

Dear Red 

You are clearly a nice person. Most people 

would retaliate with their own Facebook 

posts. The Answer Lady would be tempted 

to have friends over and play the videos on 

the WIDE-screen TV. Short of that, take a 

sympathetic male friend into your confidence 

and have a chat with him. You could also turn 

him into Facebook. You could withhold sex, or 

you could take him over to Cape May Brewery 

and make him an offer he can’t refuse.

GATSBY is a purebred, two-year-old Rottweiler 

whose owners were unable to care for 

him. He knows many useful behavior cues and 

loves to play in the yard. Gatsby is still young, 

so he needs to work on his youthful, impulsive 

behavior. He would do best if adopted into a 

home with no other pets, knowledge of his 

breed that would continue his trianing. 

KOBO & CHAMP are a father and son who 

would love to be adopted together. They are 

three-year old and one-year-old pair of pups 

that are happy, healthy and love people. Kobo 

and Champ would be good in a home with 

other dogs and cats. They’ve also lived with 

young children before. These boys would 

complete any family! 

NALA is a feisty senior girl who came to 

the shelter when her owner could no longer 

care for them. She has a mild limp from an 

improperly healed ankle injury but is otherwise 

healthy. Nala loves people and enjoys car 

rides. Loud noises make her nervous, but she 

does well with other dogs and children. Nala 

would be a great addition to any family.
