HI 286 IA The Vietnam War (1)<br />
An exploration of the Vietnam War from the American and Vietnamese perspectives,<br />
focusing on the era 1945-1975. Topics include Vietnamese culture and history, French<br />
and Japanese occupation, Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary movement, national liberation,<br />
the American war, and the experiences of soldiers and civilians on both sides. Memoirs,<br />
novels, scholarly literature, and films will help facilitate our understanding of the war. An<br />
Interpretation or Analysis designated course.<br />
HI 293, 393, 493 Independent Study in History (½ or 1)<br />
Directed study for advanced students in the major. Specific guidelines concerning<br />
independent study projects appear in the “Exploration Term and Contract Learning”<br />
section of this catalog.<br />
HI 297, 397, 497 Internship in History (½ or 1)<br />
An internship opportunity allowing students to practice career skills and/or further<br />
develop abilities beneficial for graduate study. Specific guidelines concerning internships<br />
appear in the “Exploration Term and Contract Learning” section of this catalog.<br />
HI 298, 398, 498 Teaching Experience in History (½ or 1)<br />
A contracted teaching experience that requires instructor approval. Specific guidelines<br />
concerning teaching experiences appear in the “Teaching Experiences” section of this<br />
catalog.<br />
HI 300 WR Practice of History Seminar (1)<br />
A study of what history is and what the historian does. This course focuses on the<br />
conceptual frameworks used by historians and on debates within the profession about the<br />
nature of the past and the best way to write about it; it prepares students of history to be<br />
independent researchers, curious thinkers, and effective writers. Required for history<br />
majors and minors and should be completed before the senior year. A Writing<br />
Reinforcement designated course. Prerequisite: at least sophomore standing.<br />
HI 301 The American Revolution and the Federalist Period, 1763-1801 (1)<br />
A study of the American Revolution, the creation of the new federal government, and the<br />
crucial early years of the young nation. Emphasis on three problems: the causes and<br />
nature of the Revolution, the struggle over the Constitution, and the emergence of<br />
political parties. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 303 Civil War and Reconstruction (1)<br />
The development of the American Republic in the nineteenth century with emphasis on<br />
westward expansion, the rise of sectionalism, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction<br />
years. Prerequisite: HI 300 or instructor consent.<br />
HI 309 Women of the American South (1)<br />
A study of women from the American South from pre-colonial contact to the present.<br />
Emphasis is placed on the contributions of women to the economic, political, social, and<br />
cultural development of the region. Among the topics covered are Native American<br />
Birmingham-Southern College <strong>Catalog</strong> <strong>2023</strong>-<strong>2024</strong>
