MU 298, 398, 498 Teaching Experience in Music History and Literature (½ or 1)<br />
A contracted teaching experience that requires instructor approval. Specific guidelines<br />
concerning teaching experiences appear in the “Teaching Experiences” section of this<br />
catalog. Teaching experience courses may not count toward requirements for any music<br />
degree.<br />
MU 322 The History of Film Music (1)<br />
An exploration of the history of film music and sound design. The course emphasizes<br />
both past and current analytical techniques as well as source readings. Prerequisite: EH<br />
102.<br />
MU 328 GP History of Jazz and Blues II (1)<br />
Continued study of the origins of jazz and blues and their development to the present day.<br />
Students will also learn how to execute transcriptions, as well as theoretical and cultural<br />
analyses of the intersection between world music, popular music, and classical music. A<br />
Global Perspectives designated course. Prerequisites: MU 151, MU 221, and MU 222.<br />
MU 341 Ensemble (¼)<br />
Instrumental and vocal performance in small chamber ensembles characterized by having<br />
one person to each musical part. Keyboard performers also study accompanying. May be<br />
repeated for credit.<br />
MU 343 Accompanying (¼)<br />
A course in accompanying vocal or instrumental performers at the piano.<br />
MU 351 Counterpoint (½)<br />
A study of the art of writing counterpoint, with special emphasis on eighteenth-century<br />
techniques. Prerequisite: MU 251.<br />
MU 352 Jazz Theory and Improvisation (1)<br />
The study and performance of jazz music improvisation, including chord and scale<br />
construction and nomenclature; chord/scale relationships; and blues, AABA and other<br />
song forms. Students will conduct analysis of jazz solo transcriptions and listen to<br />
required exceptional examples of standard jazz recordings. Prerequisites: MU 151 and<br />
MU 152.<br />
MU 355 Composition (½)<br />
Elementary principles of composition with an emphasis on small forms and logical<br />
organization of musical ideas. Prerequisite: MU 251. Spring.<br />
MU 371 Conducting (½)<br />
A study of the technique of conducting musical ensembles. Includes rudiments of score<br />
study, strategies for conducting effective rehearsals, and historical background of<br />
conducting. May be repeated for credit. A Leadership Studies designated course.<br />
Prerequisite: MU 152 or instructor consent.<br />
