(2) Grades of “C” or higher in all courses in professional education studies. A grade of<br />

“C-” is not acceptable.<br />

(3) A satisfactory interview and ePortfolio review, with two or more members of the<br />

education faculty, to assess performance.<br />

(4) A minimum passing score set by the Alabama State Department of Education on all<br />

Praxis tests required by the Alabama State Department of Education.<br />

Eligibility for the Teaching Certificate (Tracks I and II)<br />

The education faculty may need to change requirements in the Teacher Education<br />

Program in order to comply with regulations and policies of the Alabama State Board of<br />

Education, which grants the teaching certificate. Students should consult a faculty advisor<br />

or the certification officer in education concerning current certification requirements.<br />

To be eligible for a teaching certificate a student must complete an approved course of<br />

study in one of the following programs:<br />

Elementary/Collaborative Education Program K-6<br />

Secondary Education Program 6-12<br />

Each program has four components: general studies, professional studies, internship, and<br />

teaching field/major studies. Completion of the Teacher Education Program is necessary,<br />

but not sufficient, for recommendation for a teaching certificate. A student must also<br />

satisfy the following conditions:<br />

(1) Complete the College’s graduation requirements.<br />

(2) A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.500, a <strong>BSC</strong> grade point average of<br />

2.500, a minimum professional studies grade point average of 2.500, and a minimum<br />

teaching field grade point average of 2.500.<br />

(3) Demonstrate proficiency in teaching by earning a minimum grade of “B-” in all<br />

student teaching internships.<br />

(4) Pass the Key Assessments completed during internship.<br />

(5) Pass edTPA required by the Alabama State Board of Education.<br />

Alabama Educator Certification Assessment Program (AECAP), of which the edTPA is a<br />

part, is a precondition of professional educator certification. Passing scores on all<br />

portions of the edTPA are required for the Birmingham-Southern College education<br />

department to recommend a candidate for certification. The edTPA is not a graduation<br />
