HM 120 ES How Language Works (1)<br />
An investigation into human language. This course introduces students to linguistics, the<br />
scientific study of language. Topics include language and society, language acquisition,<br />
pragmatics, syntax, semantics, phonology, and related issues. An Explorations in<br />
Scholarship designated course.<br />
HM 125 ES Cross-Cultural Communication Strategies: East vs. West (1)<br />
A cross-cultural study of communication strategies that equips students with the basic<br />
skills and knowledge needed for successful interpersonal and cross-cultural<br />
communication. The course investigates the similarities and differences between Chinese<br />
and English speakers’ communication strategies in personal and professional<br />
conversational settings. An Explorations in Scholarship designated course.<br />
HON - Honors<br />
HON 100 ES Ecospirituality and Environmental Sustainability (1)<br />
An introduction to contemporary ecospirituality and environmental activism with a focus<br />
on environmental sustainability in Alabama. This course highlights the growing alliance<br />
between spiritual awareness and the environmental movement. Students will read works<br />
of ecocentric theologians and scientific literature on the ecology of Alabama, study<br />
organized environmental initiatives, and gain perspective from field trips and servicelearning.<br />
An Explorations in Scholarship designated course. Prerequisite: Harrison<br />
Honors Program. Spring.<br />
HON 124 Emotion and Meaning in Music (1)<br />
An exploration of the perception and meaning of music from the perspective of the<br />
musician and the listener, with specific emphasis on the social and aesthetic signification<br />
of musical experiences as they pertain to cognitive musicology. (Also listed as MU 124.)<br />
Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program.<br />
HON 125 America’s Music (1)<br />
Explores the unique qualities of American music and the contributions of American<br />
musicians to the world. The course investigates the dialectical tension between the<br />
Eurocentric tradition and the search for a unique form of musical expression in America.<br />
Complementary readings in literature, philosophy, and art, with an emphasis on primary<br />
sources. Prerequisite: Harrison Honors Program.<br />
HON 127 SM Physics by Inquiry (1)<br />
An introduction to scientific inquiry through studying fundamental physical models. We<br />
will construct and test these models primarily through laboratory investigation.<br />
Additional emphasis is placed on the history of experimental sciences and the interplay<br />
