Sustainable Event
Summit 23
Outdoor event professionals can now
register to attend a free, action-focused day
at the Sustainable Event Sumit 23 (SES 23).
Presented by Vision: 2025 and supported
by Festival Republic, the event will be held
during the Showman’s Show on 18 October
at Newbury Showground.
SES 23 returns for an eighth year bringing
event organisers, suppliers, local authorities
and experts together to share the latest
innovations, drive best practice and shape
the industry response to climate change.
The program includes the official launch
of the new Environmental Chapter of the
Purple Guide, a keynote from EarthPercent’s
Cathy Runciman, a climate communications
panel collaboration with Music Declares
Emergency, a Green Leaders workshop
on establishing industry standards, and
sessions on food sustainability and battery
technology.
Melvin Benn, Managing Director of Festival
Republic, said: “We are delighted to be
supporting the eighth Sustainable Events
Summit, with a packed programme of
essential talks and industry updates, it is a
must-attend event for anyone serious about
sustainability in outdoor events.” For more
60 Day Rule for Pop-up Sites
New legislation now permits pop-up
glamping and camping sites in England to
stay open for longer. The new '60-day rule'
applies to temporary sites with 50 pitches or
less, and also specifies that toilet and waste
disposal facilities must be provided.
“This is the biggest improvement to UK
camping since the invention of all-season
sleeping bags”, said Jonathan Knight, UK
head of Hipcamp.com. “The extended
period makes it much more attractive to
landowners across England to welcome
campers. It’s also a boon for campers, who
will now have a greater choice of places
to visit. We're already seeing pop-up
campsites on Hipcamp taking advantage of
this rule change to extend their season.”
Host Patrick Hillier, from Great Haywood
Canalside Campsite, said: “It’s hugely
positive to allow pop-up campsites to open
for a time-period that better matches all
the main holidays in the year. We now plan
to open for 39 days this summer and next
season will be open for 60. It’s an exciting
change and will also bring more custom
to the local pubs, farm shops and other
businesses.”
£250,000 Funding
Expansion
THE SECRET Garden Glamping in Lancashire, which
hosted TV shows including Celebs Go Dating and
Married at First Sight, has secured £250,000 from
Lancashire County Council's Rosebud Finance
The site began as a project for owner Derry Green
during the first Covid-19 lockdown. He built a pod for his children and
shared his journey on Facebook. After advertising it on Airbnb, he was booked up for
two years in advance. The site currently has five pods and a waiting list of more than
50,000. Green will use the investment to add a further five pods and plans to expand to
another site within the local area.
Over 1,000 Orchids at Tregaron
Glamping Site
ORCHID MEADOWS, a private nature reserve and glamping site near Tregaron,
Ceredigion, surveyed its land earlier this summer and counted 1,343 orchids.
The 25-acre small-holding features flower-rich hay meadows, classic Welsh rhos
pastures grazed by Highland cattle, wetland with rare bog plants, a pond and a
newly planted wood of native broad-leaved trees. The site also features a holiday
cottage, yurt and a glampavan.
Owner Stephen Hounsham said: “Whilst these orchids are not listed as scarce,
no orchids can be described as common anymore due to modern methods of
land management. We will do our best over the next five years to maximise the
populations of these and other wildflowers on our land. This will have a knock-on
effect on numbers of insects and farmland birds. We are a glamping site offering
stays amidst nature and this is what our guests want to see.”
