Art transforming cabinets<br />

Four cabinets will be<br />

transformedbyartists in the<br />

WaimakaririDistrict as cabinet<br />

art returns.<br />

Chorus is partneringwith the<br />

council in theventure and<br />

artists are encouragedtoget<br />

theirdesignsinbefore <strong>August</strong><br />

the Public Arts Trust to select<br />

the winning design foreach<br />

cabinet.<br />

The worksofart on cabinets<br />

oftentell storiesaboutthe<br />

communities in whichthey are<br />

located,and help to discourage<br />

tagging.<br />

MayorDan Gordonsays the<br />

council is pleasedtobe<br />

partnering with Chorus again to<br />

bringmore cabinet art to<br />

Waimakariri.<br />

‘‘I am apassionatesupporter<br />

of the arts and we know that<br />

artwork makes our towns more<br />

vibrant and livelier.<br />

‘‘This is afantastic<br />

opportunity for local artists to<br />

get involved and showcase their<br />

work,which can only be<br />

positive for our district,’’ he<br />

says.<br />

Chorus Community Relations<br />

ManagerJoSeddon says it<br />

makessense to partner with<br />

localcouncils, as they have the<br />

same goal in mind to<br />

discourage graffiti vandalism.<br />

‘‘It is great to work with local<br />

councils when it comes to<br />

choosingcabinets and designs<br />

as they know whattheir<br />

communityneeds,’’ she says.<br />

‘‘Anyone can put forward a<br />

design, with the only<br />

stipulation that it has meaning<br />

and promotesdiversity and<br />

inclusion,’’ Mrs Seddon says.<br />

Submissionsare open until<br />

<strong>August</strong> 31 andthe winning<br />

design for each cabinet will be<br />

chosen from entriesreceived.<br />

Waimakariri has also been<br />

chosen as one of the towns<br />

nationwidetobepart of the<br />

Rainbow cabinet art initiative.<br />

More than8000 booksfor<br />

newborn babies have been<br />

donated to parents as part of<br />

the RotaryClub of Rangiora’s<br />

baby bookproject.<br />

The project was established<br />

in 1994 with books donated to<br />

100 babiesborn at Rangiora<br />

Hospitalthat year.<br />

This yearthe Rotary Club of<br />

Rangiora is forecasting1000<br />

bookswill be donated to babies<br />

at theRangiora HealthHub<br />

MaternityUnit which was<br />

opened in October2015,<br />

replacing the 90­year­old<br />

Rangiora Hospital.<br />

The baby book project is run<br />

by Rangiora Rotarian Helen<br />

Richards. She began working<br />

on the projectin2019, assisting<br />

the lateBrianHawkefirst,then<br />

taking overthe role in May<br />

2022.<br />

‘‘It is avery specialproject to<br />

be involved in. It is a<br />

community project and fits<br />

with Rotary International<br />

cornerstone programmes of<br />

basiceducation, literacy,and<br />

disease prevention,’’ she says.<br />

Talesseriesofbooks donated<br />

to the babies are supplied by<br />

<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> Books at a<br />

heavily discounted price<br />

especially for the Rotary<br />

project.<br />

The Rangiora Health Hub<br />

midwife manager Jen<br />

Cunningham says they are<br />

thankfultothe RotaryClub for<br />

the books it gifts.<br />

‘‘It is lovely to see parents<br />

cherish the books as one of the<br />

baby’s first story books,but also<br />

reading them to siblings when<br />

they come to visit.’’<br />
