Stadium hosts young basketball players
Young up­and­coming basketballers
took to the courts at MainPower
Stadium in Rangiora as they competed
in the first leg of acompetition run by
Primary Sport Canterbury (PSC).
Atotal of 32 teams —16girls and 16
boys from years 7and 8—were involved,
while asecond competition will be held
on August Wednesday 9, with another 16
girls and boys teams, from years 5and 6.
There are eight teams from North
Canterbury schools involved in the
tournament with the remaining 56 teams
coming from zones covering
Christchurch East, West, South, North,
Ellesmere, Hurunui, Kowai, Lincoln,
Mid Canterbury, Selwyn and the West
Coast.
Qualifying games for PSC were held at
the stadium recently to find North
Canterbury's finalists.
Atotal of 32 teams competed over two
nights at MainPower Stadium to find the
finalists to go through to the PSC
competition.
There were some very hard fought,
and tight encounters.
In the end three teams from Kaiapoi
North, two from Ashgrove, and one each
from Swannanoa, Oxford and
Southbrook won their way into the PSC
tournament.
The event, in which 250 students
compete in each Wednesday, is
normally run at Cowles Stadium, but the
move has been made to MainPower
Stadium this year where there is an
extra court available to host games.
There are also coaches, managers,
spectators and referees on the sidelines
during the competitions.
MainPower Stadium is operated by
the North Canterbury Sport &
Recreation Trust, whose aim is to
promote and facilitate healthy sport and
recreational opportunities for everyone
in its community.
MainPower Stadium is set up to host a
wide range of sports both socially and
competitively.
From clubs games and training to
local and national sporting
tournaments, MainPower Stadium is
fast becoming the hub for indoor sport in
North Canterbury and beyond.
It has ahigh quality sprung floor
which is permanently lined for
basketball (4 courts), netball (4 courts),
futsal (4 small and one full size court),
volleyball (4 courts), badminton/
Pickleball (6 courts), and Korfball (1
court).
It provides all goals, poles, hoops, nets
and other equipment to set up each
court configuration —all you need to do
is provide balls, rackets etc.
In some cases balls, badminton,
shuttlecocks, Pickleball paddles and
balls are available at an additional hire
cost.
It also has aDrDish Basketball
Shooting Machine available for hire.
