Stadium hosts young basketball players<br />

Young up­and­coming basketballers<br />

took to the courts at MainPower<br />

Stadium in Rangiora as they competed<br />

in the first leg of acompetition run by<br />

Primary Sport <strong>Canterbury</strong> (PSC).<br />

Atotal of 32 teams —16girls and 16<br />

boys from years 7and 8—were involved,<br />

while asecond competition will be held<br />

on <strong>August</strong> Wednesday 9, with another 16<br />

girls and boys teams, from years 5and 6.<br />

There are eight teams from <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> schools involved in the<br />

tournament with the remaining 56 teams<br />

coming from zones covering<br />

Christchurch East, West, South, <strong>North</strong>,<br />

Ellesmere, Hurunui, Kowai, Lincoln,<br />

Mid <strong>Canterbury</strong>, Selwyn and the West<br />

Coast.<br />

Qualifying games for PSC were held at<br />

the stadium recently to find <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong>'s finalists.<br />

Atotal of 32 teams competed over two<br />

nights at MainPower Stadium to find the<br />

finalists to go through to the PSC<br />

competition.<br />

There were some very hard fought,<br />

and tight encounters.<br />

In the end three teams from Kaiapoi<br />

<strong>North</strong>, two from Ashgrove, and one each<br />

from Swannanoa, Oxford and<br />

Southbrook won their way into the PSC<br />

tournament.<br />

The event, in which 250 students<br />

compete in each Wednesday, is<br />

normally run at Cowles Stadium, but the<br />

move has been made to MainPower<br />

Stadium this year where there is an<br />

extra court available to host games.<br />

There are also coaches, managers,<br />

spectators and referees on the sidelines<br />

during the competitions.<br />

MainPower Stadium is operated by<br />

the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Sport &<br />

Recreation Trust, whose aim is to<br />

promote and facilitate healthy sport and<br />

recreational opportunities for everyone<br />

in its community.<br />

MainPower Stadium is set up to host a<br />

wide range of sports both socially and<br />

competitively.<br />

From clubs games and training to<br />

local and national sporting<br />

tournaments, MainPower Stadium is<br />

fast becoming the hub for indoor sport in<br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> and beyond.<br />

It has ahigh quality sprung floor<br />

which is permanently lined for<br />

basketball (4 courts), netball (4 courts),<br />

futsal (4 small and one full size court),<br />

volleyball (4 courts), badminton/<br />

Pickleball (6 courts), and Korfball (1<br />

court).<br />

It provides all goals, poles, hoops, nets<br />

and other equipment to set up each<br />

court configuration —all you need to do<br />

is provide balls, rackets etc.<br />

In some cases balls, badminton,<br />

shuttlecocks, Pickleball paddles and<br />

balls are available at an additional hire<br />

cost.<br />

It also has aDrDish Basketball<br />

Shooting Machine available for hire.<br />
