Smugglers: Beneath the Surface
Discover the real people and history
behind Dorset’s tales of smuggling in this
new exhibition from Shire Hall Museum.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Dorset was home to
some of Britain’s most notorious smugglers. Across
the coastline, hundreds of people were secretly moving
goods in and out of the country for profit. But who were
these people known as smugglers? And why did they
begin smuggling?
‘Smugglers: Beneath the Surface’ takes a closer look at
four of Dorset’s most renowned smugglers. The nature
of smuggling means those involved have left us little
written evidence of their undercover exploits. What we
do have are the handed-down stories.
This exhibition explores the fame and success of Isaac
Gulliver, the ruthless and violent behaviour of the
Hawkhurst gang, the tragedy of young John Webber,
and how smuggling became a “family business” for the
Northovers.
13

Each story gives a glimpse of the people behind
the word ‘smuggler’ and explores how they ended
up becoming involved in one of the most lucrative
professions of their time.
‘Smugglers: Beneath the Surface’ is at Shire Hall
Museum from 27th July until 16th September 2023.
Entry to the exhibition is included with a Museum ticket.
Art in the Garden
Perennial colour from Galiani Glass Art
Who would think of putting art in the garden? Why ever
would you want to do this? At Galiani Glass Art, we think
it’s the perfect place to show off the properties of glass
and add incredible colours to your garden.
Glass provides you with striking colour all through the
year, stunning effects, and a definite ‘wow’ factor. You
can choose to position your sculpture in dappled shadow,
where the light and shade create amazing patterns and a
moving kaleidoscope of colour within the glass, or in full
sun where each location adds a different aspect to the
design and the design process.
In winter and spring, gardens can look a bit lacklustre,
with little colour to brighten them up. This is where a
glass sculpture in the garden delivers you colour and
beauty all year round, with arresting garden architecture
that blends with and adds to your garden design.
The great news is that the colours in glass don’t fade,
you don’t have to water them, and they don’t need a lot
of weeding, making it a perfect addition to the garden.
Our surroundings affect the way we feel, our mood and
our positivity. It is well known that sunshine, colour,
nature and art have positive effects on our mind and
spirit. As many of us found out during lockdown, our
gardens nurture us. They help us foster a feeling of
wellbeing that supports us through the ups and downs
and day-to-day stresses life throws our way.
With that in mind, we at Galiani began to utilise our
design skills and glass craftsmanship to develop art
for the garden in our own special way. We meet the
challenges of design, function and the essence of yearround
colour in our Glass Art creations.
Our Sculptures are all bespoke, often having a stainless
steel form designed and made in-house and polished to a
high shine, to hold the beautiful glass and complement
Above left: ‘Solar Flame’ – This Galiani ‘flame’ design was created using
hot fire colours. Each piece of glass had to sit precisely against the
others, needing exact cutting skills and craftsmanship. The colours in
the finished piece look as if they are overlapping and undulating as
living flames do. The stand for this sculpture is made using mild steel,
so the metal takes on the red tones within the glass as it ages.
Above right: Ian working on a sculpture design. The complex building of
the ‘Solar Flame’ sculpture begins at the design station.
13

‘Swanage Waves’ – This gorgeous sculpture was made
in collaboration with Ted Edley of Dorset Copper Fish. Ted
created the beautiful copper frame for the glass panel, and
together they create a stunning effect. The panel is made using
great craftsmanship and technique, with strong opaque colours
of glass mounted on a translucent white back glass. It captures
the feeling of constantly moving ocean waves.

the shapes and colours within, as well as adding a
further dimension of reflection to the overall impact.
Easy to keep clean, just a wipe with a damp cloth is all
that may be needed. Just sit back and enjoy the addition
to your garden.
We have already been fortunate enough to have had
our sculptures featured at Chelsea Flower Show and
on display at Cotswold Sculpture Park in 2022. We
are now designing pieces to have on display at RHS
Prairie Garden in Sussex and additional sculpture parks
throughout 2023 - so do look out for new pieces coming
to our website and social media.
Imagine a glass and metal sculpture in your garden
as distinctive as the ones pictured here. To begin the
process, all you need to do is contact us and arrange to
come and visit our studio for a chat over coffee. Bring
any ideas you may have with you, and we can go from
there. We will start with design sketches and, once we
have your approval, will move into the making process.
You can even pop in to see how the design is building -
exciting times!
We love to work with potential clients, discussing their
ideas, colour choices and thoughts for their design to
get a good understanding of what they’re visualising. We
add in our experience and knowledge to create just the
individual piece of art to compliment your garden space.
You can be assured we take pride in the high quality and
impact of the finished sculpture.
You can arrange to visit our Galiani Glass Art studio
outside Poole, and you will find us at our own solo
exhibition at Walford Mill from Wednesday 5th July –
Sunday 30th July 2023.
Ian Godfrey and Gail
Boothman are the driving
forces behind Galiani Glass
Art. Working with glass in
different ways for nearly
15 years, they are known
for their wide range of
glass art creations for
homes and gardens, and
have their work in private
collections. For more
Opposite: ‘Mystic Ocean’ - The glass rondel is made using beautiful
transparent sea colours cut with skill and precision and capturing the
movement of the sea. Added texture is created with individually placed
pieces of glass. It is set in a highly polished stainless steel frame which
reflects the colours of the glass and the setting in which it’s placed.
Above left and right: ‘Water Planet’ – Glass rondel set in a mild steel
frame. This technique uses fine glass powders that blend and flow
creating a wonderful organic feel to the glass. Again, the frame was
designed and made by Ted Edley. Not only does it look amazing in the
sunlight, it packs a visual punch in the snow too.
Ten Moons Sisterhood
NEST welcomes you to Motherhood Retreats
We know how hard motherhood can be and how tired it
can make us feel, as well as knowing how hard it can be
to find time to take care of you. With this in mind,
we decided to curate a day retreat just
for mothers - whether you are in the
antenatal or postnatal period of your
motherhood, you are WELCOME.
We hold space for you to be you in the
company of our Ten Moons Sisterhood.
The day begins with a warm welcome of
hot drinks and pastries as you enter our
‘hygge’-inspired sanctuary. The morning
is filled with talks and discussions as
well as meditation, gentle yoga and
opportunity to weave in the ancient
wisdom of crafting in community. There
will be a delicious plant-based, homecooked
Dorset lunch inspired by the
season, followed by home-baked treats
in the afternoon. Our spa space will be
open, with our brilliant therapist Zoe on hand to offer
you a divine reflexology treatment or dreamy facial, all
included in your ticket price. Aimee will be sharing her
mothering-by-the-moon yoga practices, and Lucy will
be taking private 1:1 consultations throughout the day
(usual investment price £65). In addition, the brilliant
Faye from Play & Bloom, qualified
Nanny and forest school leader, will be
there to take care of your little one as
and when you need, with our in-house
crêche service. We close our day with a
beautiful mother-blessing ceremony.
It is going to be a day for you to be
mothered. With downtime too for
reading and journaling, we know you
will leave feeling refreshed, revived and,
most importantly, nourished from the
inside out.
This part of womanhood was never
supposed to be walked alone. Having a
baby is hard; hard on the heart, the body
and the mind. It’s also hard being a
mother and dealing with everything life sends your way.
It can affect mood, relationships, worthiness and so
much more, but what if this wild and beautiful ride could
19

e shared, and worries could be shared? This beautiful
retreat is an opportunity to breathe. To come as you
are for a big day of love, nourishment and movement.
We want you to remember the goddess you are, feel
powerful in your position as a mother and know you
are not alone. A space is held for you at the gorgeous
Launceston Farm, Dorset, to spend journeying back to
you.
Book your space now for only £50. We cannot wait to
welcome you.
Cycling Season
Pedal through Summer at the EBIKE Cafe, Weymouth with the
help of the government-backed Cycle Scheme
19

With this summer comes the opportunity to
enjoy the outdoors in a new way. The EBIKE Cafe on
Custom House Quay in Weymouth, known for being the
town’s hippest cafe and eBike sales and experience
centre, is making it easier than ever to get outside
and soak up the summer sun. With the support of the
government-backed Cycle Scheme, the EBIKE Cafe is the
perfect place to start your summer adventures.
The Cycle Scheme is a government initiative allowing
employees to purchase an eBike or bicycle and
accessories through salary sacrifice, reducing the cost
of the purchase. The scheme is designed to encourage
more people to cycle to work, reducing traffic congestion
and improving overall health and well-being.
Under the scheme, an employee chooses an eBike/bike
and accessories, which are then ordered and paid for by
the employer. The employee then pays for it through a
salary sacrifice arrangement, where the cost is deducted
from their gross salary, reducing the overall cost of the
purchase. This means the employee saves money on
the cost and also benefits from the savings on National
Insurance contributions.
The scheme is open to all UK employees, and there
are no restrictions on the type of bike that can be
purchased. This makes it an ideal option for those
considering purchasing an eBike from the EBIKE Cafe.
24

With the added assistance of an electric motor, eBikes
make cycling to work even more accessible and
enjoyable, especially for those who live in hilly areas
or have longer commutes. Overall, the Cycle Scheme
is a fantastic opportunity for employees to purchase
an eBike and accessories at a reduced cost while also
promoting the benefits of cycling.
You can find a helpful calculator on the EBIKE Cafe’s
website by following this link ebikecafe.co.uk Here, you
will be able to see how much money you can save. The
Cycle Scheme can be used in conjunction with other
offers available at the EBIKE Cafe.
Why purchase an eBike?
• Easier pedalling: eBikes have electric motors that
provide assistance when pedalling, making it easier
to ride up hills and in headwinds
• Longer range: eBikes can travel further distances
than traditional bicycles, thanks to their
rechargeable batteries
• Convenience: eBikes offer more convenience than
• traditional bicycles, as they don’t require as much
physical exertion and can be used for longer trips
• Speed: eBikes can travel at higher speeds than
traditional bicycles, allowing for quicker commutes
• Comfort: eBikes often feature more comfortable
seats and upright handlebars, reducing fatigue and
discomfort during long rides
• Environmentally friendly: eBikes produce zero
emissions and are a more environmentally friendly
mode of transportation than cars or motorcycles
EBIKE CAFE @ Deheers is open seven days a week, from
9am to 4pm, on the ground floor of Deheers, 9A Custom
House Quay, Weymouth, DT4 8BG.
Sarah Dale Aesthetics
Dorchester’s leading skin and laser clinic
Sarah Dale Aesthetics (SDA) brings you the most
advanced skincare and non-surgical treatments in
Dorchester and across Dorset. We offer a natural and
effective alternative to anti-aging injectables and
surgery. We consider ourselves a pro-aging clinic and
feel we can embrace and even celebrate the aging
process with style and dignity.
I’m sure you are now asking, what treatments do SDA
offer and will their treatments help improve my skin
health and condition? Can they help me with unwanted
hair, red facial veins, skin pigmentation, reduce fine lines
and wrinkles, or acne that really upsets me? The answer
to all the above is a big YES!
Sarah Dale is a registered nurse who built her business
on a strong foundation of expert training and complete
Our most popular treatment at this time of year is
permanent hair removal. We have been performing
laser treatments for over 15 years, and we specialise in
getting you permanent results using our gold-standard
medical laser to remove unwanted hair.
• In as little as one session you can get up to a 50%
reduction of your unwanted hair
• We can treat ALL skin types
• No more waxing or plucking before your holiday,
which means no more rashes and irritation
• It will save you time and money long-term
• Most importantly, our laser is safe, with clinically
proven results. The gold and sapphire cooling tip
makes for more comfortable and faster results!
Our best skin advise is: protect your skin from the
sun and other harmful rays. It’s a subject we’re truly
passionate about. Sun protection should be a part of
everyone’s daily skincare regime, regardless of time of
year and weather. There are plenty of facts to back up
our advice:
• UVA is present in daylight all year round, penetrating
cloud and glass
• UVA makes up 95% of the sun’s rays and, as a
longer wavelength, it penetrates deeper into the skin
than UVB1,2
• High Energy Visible Light, commonly known as Blue
Light, is proven to more harmful than UVA
• UV is responsible for up to 80% of skin ageing
So, it’s clear – no matter what time of year or what
you’re doing, we encourage you to protect your skin
today for your best skin tomorrow. Fortunately, we’ve
got you covered with our fantastic Heliocare Range.
Nothing protects your skin like Heliocare 360˚. It’s
revolutionary formulation not only shields the skin’s
surface from damage, but also defends the skin from
within with the unique and powerful Fernblock FC. This
unrivalled combination means your skin will not only
have the maximum protection against UVA, UVB, visible
light and infrared-A, but also the free radicals caused by
other environmental challenges too.
There’s a Heliocare 360˚ product which will suit every
one of our clients.
We look forward to welcoming you to our clinic in
the future. Come and meet our reception team
and clinicians. We offer thorough, complimentary
consultations. Ring, email or make contact through
social media to make an appointment. Telephone
Cowork.
Introducing Purple Office coworking
space; a better place to work.
Since 2021, Purple Office in Poundbury, Dorchester, has
been providing a workspace offering a vast improvement
over the traditional work-from-home setup. Recognising
the increase in remote and homeworking since the
pandemic, this award-winning coworking space emerged
to supply professionals a more formal, motivating and
inspiring office facility, which is also affordable and
accessible. The space has been designed to foster
productivity, creativity and a sense of community, while
promoting happiness and flexibility among its occupants.
James Hart, Director, says, “Since the start of the
pandemic, working from home has never been so
popular. We recognise, however, that many professionals
occasionally require a more formal working environment.
This is where coworking spaces are invaluable. Our
pay-as-you-go pricing for desk hire and meeting room
hire makes our facilities affordable and accessible for
everyone, with no long-term financial commitments
during these turbulent times.”
Venue Hire
Not just a coworking space, Purple Office offers full
venue hire for any kind of formal or informal gathering,
be it a company team-building event, regional team
meeting, educational talk or hobby club. With a range
of versatile seating options, the venue can comfortably
seat 25-30 people. There is a full working kitchen, or the
office team can work closely with local caterers to help
you create your perfect event.
Purple Office recently hosted local charity Weldmar
Hospicecare, supplying them the perfect space for their
team day:
“Purple Office provided the perfect solution when we
were seeking space for our team to meet for a creative
and strategic day away from our offices. The flexible
space was ideal for our needs. The stunning meeting
room and lots of break out areas meant we could
maximise the day. The informal and fully equipped
kitchen and breakfast bar area was a great facility,
providing the ideal place to mingle and chat during
breaks and lunch. The IT facilities were spot on too.”
