Town Mayor, Coun Susan Burkitt, opened the event and welcomed everyone to the venue before Mexborough duo Reytasrain performed acoustic versions of some classic pop numbers. Along with guitarist Adam’s vocal harmonies, singer Harry’s vocal range raised a few eyebrows as he went for some very high notes to give the songs a new dimension. In the tradition of the great female blues shouters, the powerful vocals of Jody White - daughter of Sheffield legend Frank White - fronted The Bear Cats who delivered a lively set of rockin’ rhythm & blues, complimented by some great playing by her tight-sounding three-piece band. Husband and wife duo Alan & Vanessa were one of the highlights of the evening. Supplemented by drums and bass, their spot featured a delightful mix of songs including Buddy Holly’s True Love Ways and the Sinatra’s Somethin’ Stupid. Midway through their set, their talented daughter Tilly performed a stirring rendition of House Of The Rising Sun. Mom and dad continued with Bruce Springsteen’s Hungry Heart and Elton John’s I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, resulting in the duo coming back for an encore of The Mavericks’ Dance The Night Away, which had some members of the audience doing just that. Another local musical hero, singer/songwriter Julian Jones, led his band through an engrossing selection of mainly his own songs. Kicking off with his twangy country-rocker Rackin’ Up The Whiskys Again, other delights were the folksy I Did Say and the honky tonker I’d Be Your World. For a rousing version of the Johnny Cash/June Carter classic Jackson, Julian was joined by another great Dronfield talent, singer Hannah Lily from Revolver. Show organiser John Firminger hands over a £1,100 donation to Neil Hayter of Dronfield First Responders Performing a great selection of their own songs The Fargo Railroad Company are of a similar musical style as American combos Marshall Tucker Band and Lynard Skynnard. Hugely popular in these parts, this was reflected by way of plenty of audience participation, singing along with the band as on their signature song Bar-Room Band and Punch Drunk. Providing a great selection of contemporary country music were the six-piece Leather Chaps, fronted by another great singer, Gill Coupe. Including songs by Tammy Wynette, Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks, delivered in a party atmosphere, they soon had the line-dancers and the two-steppers out on the floor struttin’ their stuff. Finishing off the night were a four-piece line-up of veteran ensemble Past Masters. Fronted by guitarist Dave Robinson, they too featured another vocalist, Stephanie King. Performing a set of classics from the 1960s and 70s, they kept the dance floor filled until around midnight, rounding off an excellent day of live music. Organiser John Firminger and Hilltop Club secretary Dick Armitage are pleased to announce that the event raised £1,100 for Dronfield First Responders. John and Dick also wish to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the musicians who took part and all those who attended. Hopefully Rockin’ Roots will continue to be an annual live music event for Dronfield people to look forward to.
