EYE on what ’ s on Dance, music, art and drama W HEN it comes to belly dancing, did you know that Dronfield is home to the biggest agency in the UK? Many of the group’s 42 members will feature in a spectacular show at Dronfield Civic Hall on Saturday, September 9th. Taste of Cairo Presents is the only production of its kind in the UK right now and it will showcase the diverse and vibrant range of dance that the Middle East and beyond has to offer. The first half of the show, Treasures of the Nile, will feature traditional folk dances, beautiful Taste of Cairo Presents regional costumes and live percussion. The Jewels of the Orient part of the proceedings is a dynamic performance portraying a dazzling display of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dances, featuring swords, wings and more. The show starts at 7pm and tickets are available, £12.50 and £10 concessions, from shimmyschool.com/product/tocpresents CHESTERFIELD Philharmonic Choir is inviting people to join its ranks this autumn. As rehearsals get under way for the 80-plus strong choir’s latest concert, potential new members are invited to pop along and see if they might like to get involved. In particular, the group would like to hear from male singers. The choir’s Liz Holloway said: “Everyone agrees that singing is good for us, so our message is why not come along to Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir this autumn and see if its for you. “We perform four public concerts each year in various venues, including the Crooked Spire where we are concert choir in residence. “We begin rehearsals on Thursday 31st August in the Central Methodist Church, Chesterfield, from 7.15-9.30pm, in preparation for our performance on 11th November, at 3pm, in St Thomas’s Church, Brampton, of, among others, John Rutter’s Requiem.” For more information email Liz at eholloway3@yahoo.com or visit www.chestphilchoir.org.uk HELD in Sheffield's stunning Botanical Gardens each September, Art in the Gardens is one of the largest outdoor art markets in the North, with artists, craft makers and visitors coming from across the UK. With thousands of pieces of art and craft on show, the event offers an opportunity to meet artists and buy from them direct, all while enjoying the beautiful grounds of the surrounding gardens. The event features premier artists in the pavilions and marquees, sculptures on the lawns, the Open Art Competition, a dedicated home and gardens area and a host of professional artists and craft makers. The event will be held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September. Tickets should be bought in advance via Eventbrite BUILT as a cinema in 1923, the Grade II-listed Chesterfield venue now known as the Winding Wheel Theatre has presented 100 years of entertainment within its halftimbered mock Tudor walls. On Sunday, 10th September, at 7pm, audiences are invited to celebrate the centenary at Centenary Gala Concert. The event includes performances, including excerpts from musicals and plays, from Academy of Dance, Chesterfield Symphony Orchestra, Chesterfield Operatic Society, Chesterfield Studios, Diane Bradbury Theatre Dance School, Directions Theatre Arts, Gekkota Arts, Rumpus Theatre Company and Wise 76 Owl Theatre Company. The evening’s compere is Tony Rudd, from Britain's Got Talent and this year’s Aladdin Pantomime with a special guest appearance by Bernie Clifton. From Monday, 11th September to Friday 15th September, every day from 10am-7pm, the Winding Wheel Theatre Function Room is open for an exhibition detailing the theatre’s journey from cinema to as it is today. Meanwhile there are building tours and the screening of a classic film from each of the last ten decades as chosen by audiences. Tickets from Chesterfield Theatres. SHEFFIELD Theatres is staging The Hypochondriac, Roger McGough’s celebrated adaptation of Molière’s witty satire. Self-obsessed and fixated on his health, wealthy Argan spends his time and money on frequent visits to the family physician. With medical bills piling up, he believes he has found the perfect solution to his problem. But with an exasperated household growing tired of his antics, Argan’s time may be better spent addressing what is real, rather than worrying about what is imagined. A witty satire punctuated with music and dance, this adaptation of Molière’s masterpiece proves that laughter really is the best form of medicine. The Hypochondriac comes to Crucible Theatre, from Saturday, 30th September, to Saturday, 21st October. Tickets from Sheffield Theatres. COAL Aston Live welcomes back Los Pacaminos, featuring Paul Young, for their third show at the Village Hall on Saturday, 25th November. The event is already a sell-out. Los Pacaminos is a Tex-Mex band that was formed by pop star Paul in 1992 during a break in his music career. The band originally consisted of six members, including guitarist Jamie Moses, accordion and keyboard player Matt Irving, songwriter Drew Barfield, bassist Steve Greetham, and drummer Mark Pinder. The band’s influences include the Texas Tornados, The Sir Douglas Quintet, Flaco Jimenez, as well as Ry Cooder, Calexico, Roy Orbison, The Band and Chuck Berry.
