Alpine Garden
The Gornergrat Railway offers access to a hiking area
around the Gornergrat that’s out of this world. This natural
paradise offers footpaths to suit all tastes.
Hiking suggestions
a. 1 0.5 km 0.20 hr
360° loop on the Gornergrat
Round walk on the Gornergrat with magnificent
panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
b. 1 3 km 1.00 hr
Riffelsee path
Rotenboden Riffelberg
Hike to Lake Riffelsee with its reflection of the
Matterhorn.
c. 1 6.3 km 3.00 hrs
Swiss Topwalk
Hike from the Riffelalp to the Gornergrat
with non-stop views of the Matterhorn.
d. 1 3.2 km 1.05 hrs
Sonnenweg (Sun Path)
Gornergrat Riffelberg
Scenic walk along the railway line down to Riffelberg.
360° walking loop
High-altitude trail with access to the viewing platform on
the Gornergrat.

Every day until the snow falls
Strolling through the Alpine Garden at the Rotenboden station
at 2800 m above sea level feels like a walk in paradise.
The Alpine Garden offers a view that takes your breath
away and the Matterhorn, the Riffelhorn and the Riffelsee
seem close enough to touch.
Nature lovers will find unique high alpine vegetation here.
Some plants thrive exclusively here. The Alpine Garden extends
over more than 5000 m 2 . The flora on the Gornergrat
is one of the richest in species in the Swiss Alps and is unique
because of its special location. Here, many plant species rise
much higher than in comparable areas and it is a pleasure
to explore them.
To delve even more into the world of alpine plants, there
are numerous signs with QR codes along the way that tell
exciting facts about the flora.
Code of conduct
Plant life at 2,800 metres above sea level is hard and
fragile, and visitor pressure on the Gornergrat is high. In
order to preserve and protect this unique natural heritage,
the following rules must be observed:

Lesser-known path towards Gant
as far as Lake Grün, where you can swim.

Riffelalp round walk
Immerse yourself in the Swiss pine forest with views
of the Matterhorn.
• Keep to the paths at all times – stepping on the plants
damages / kills them
• Do not pick plants in the Alpine Garden
• Keep dogs on a leash and hold children by the hand
• Don’t leave any rubbish behind
• Please do not touch plants or signs
