One of the things I love most about Fall is the colour of the
leaves on the trees. I have to say, modestly of course, that I
have one of the most beautiful trees in my front yard. The
leaves go totally red! Once they start falling from the tree, my
granddaughter and I would gather up some of them and put
them in a large round bowl on my dining room table. One
time there was a big bug on one leaf in the bowl and my
granddaughter came running fast towards me yelling,
“Gramma, the leaf had a baby?”
(The unfortunate thing right now is that there are a bunch of
ants circling the tree also thinking it is pretty beautiful)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
It’s a wonderful time to take note of what we are thankful for.
Sometimes, saying it out loud, writing it down or even just
thinking it reminds us of the blessings we have.
• I am thankful for the GWSA and the partnership with the
City of Guelph.
• I am thankful for the volunteers.
• I am thankful for the people I have met.
• I am thankful for the friends I have made.
• I am thankful for the City staff.
• I am thankful for the Sentinel staff.
• I am thankful for our Welcome Desk.
• I am thankful for the awesome display of quilts and
knitting and creations AND I am thankful that I don’t
have my wallet with me all the time or I would be broke.
• I am thankful for the beautiful displays of photography
and art that are hung in the halls towards our peaceful
Library space.
Thanksgiving is a time for fond memories. I would have loved to have brought my mom and
dad here when they were alive. My dad would have found a venue to play his harmonica or
form a group of Barbershoppers like he sang with up in North Bay, Ontario. My mom would
have been the type to enjoy the card games – in her elder years, we must have played hundreds
of games. However, she was also naturally artistic and could paint or draw. Unlike my parents,
I have no artistic or singing talent!
Your GWSA Board wishes you all a harvest of blessings, good health and good times. We
continue to hope that you are active, involved, making friends and aging with dignity.
JOAN
Joan has been a volunteer on the Trips, Travel and
Tours Committee for about 6 years. As she has
always had a passion for travel, joining this
committee seemed a natural pursuit for her. Joan
wanted to be proactive by sharing her interest in
travel with others, encouraging people to try
something new in their lives. She would like to
reassure people who are nervous to travel alone that
“they are always with others in a very supportive
group. Approximately 1/3 of the people are on their
own on most trips. Everything is taken care of and
there are always two hosts on the bus whom a
traveller can go to for assistance.”
Research data states that travel has many health
benefits for seniors. Travel can boost physical
activity, but only as much as you desire. It can
broaden your horizons and form new and exciting
memories. Joan also adds that there are social
benefits such as increasing engagement with other
like-minded individuals and the possibility of making
new friends.
Joan continues to be inspired to volunteer on the
Travel Committee as she enjoys the companionship
of committee members. She has made new friends
and so her social engagements have increased,
The Sentinel - October 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 2
resulting in an element of personal attachment in
volunteering. She also enjoys planning and hosting
the trips and gets great satisfaction from seeing
others getting out and enjoying themselves.
Volunteering “gets me out of the house and gives me
something to look forward to in the future.”
Joan was employed as a librarian for many years
and this work enabled her to financially be able to
travel to such destinations as Europe and Australia.
She just recently returned from a vacation in
Newfoundland. Besides travel, she enjoys reading,
walking, dining out and movies at the Bookshelf
Cinema, as well as her volunteer work at the Mission
Thrift Store.
Joan values her volunteer work at the Evergreen
immensely and gets a lot of satisfaction from helping
others to enjoy
themselves. The GWSA
appreciates the work
that she and the other
committee members do
to make our lives more
interesting and active
through travel!
THANKSGIVING
October brings us cool (and sometimes rainy) days
as fall is in full swing. We do have the Thanksgiving
weekend to look forward to!
Here are some interesting facts about our
Thanksgiving celebration.
• The first Thanksgiving Day after Confederation
was on April 15, 1872, to give thanks for the
recovery of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward
VII) from a serious illness.
• From 1879 to 1920, Thanksgiving Day was
celebrated annually in October or November, to
celebrate “the blessings of an abundant harvest.”
• From 1921 to 1930, Thanksgiving was combined
with Armistice Day (now Remembrance Day),
which was observed on the Monday of the week of
November 11.
• Thanksgiving has taken place on the second
Monday in October since 1931, except for 1935,
when that date conflicted with a general election.
• Many traditional Thanksgiving foods -- such as
turkey, squash and corn -- are native to the Americas,
in keeping with the theme of celebrating the harvest.
• While turkeys have nothing to do with the country
Turkey, their name does -- settlers called the birds
turkeys because of their similarity to a European
bird, the African Helmeted Guinea Fowl, which was
known as the turkey-cock since it was believed to
have come to Europe via Turkey.
• There are 80 cranberry farms in B.C. with many
berries destined for the Thanksgiving table, and
while it is doubtful cranberries were served at the
first Thanksgiving meals, the indigenous people used
them for cooking and dyeing and introduced them to
the settlers.
• While pumpkins are a staple of many Canadian
Thanksgiving meals as well, they also originated
with indigenous people and
it is not known if they were
present at the first
Thanksgiving meals.
However, there are recipes
for pumpkin pie that date
back to the 1650s.
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
All of the art groups and artisans
will have an opportunity to show
off their wares and offer items for
sale if they wish. A portion of the
cost will go toward the GWSA,
and staff at the cash will be familiar
with how to process these payments
and ensure artists receive
their funds, again, if they wish to
sell their creations.
A contract will be sent out to all
groups to review; it outlines how
the shows will run. I intend to
change the art monthly and to be
present the second Monday of
each month to put up a new show.
Some shows will run longer and
we may have special presentations.
I plan on going through the list
of groups alphabetically as presented
in the Sentinel. Please start
to think about the piece you would
like to hang, present and showcase.
Further information will be forwarded
to all groups.
Badminton
The Badminton Club continues to
be a thriving and popular club with
a membership of 115, and numerous
in-house and external activities
taking place.
There were a number of new
members, so a Level 1 coaching
clinic was held to help new members
get back into the swing of the
game. Level 1 reviews the basic
skills of footwork, positioning and
commonly used strokes such as the
forehand and backhand. Since
many new members have not
played badminton in a number of
years, reviewing basic skills is a
great way to re-introduce members
to the game and help them improve
their skills. A level 2 clinic
is being planned for later this fall.
A few external social events
The Sentinel - October 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 2
were also held, including lawn
bowling and an annual August potluck
in the park. Both were big
successes with CBC radio being
present at the lawn bowling, where
some of our members were interviewed.
Spouses and other family
members were invited to both
those events, so it was a great way
to meet members’ families.
We are planning our annual
Christmas lunch to be held in December.
A food bank drive was
successfully held last year so we
are planning to hold it again.
None of these things could take
place without a committed leadership
team and a number of members
assisting with different aspects
of the club helping to run the
coaching sessions and tournaments,
assisting with the social
events, etc. However, like many
clubs, trying to recruit members to
fill leadership positions is a challenge.
Overall, it has been a highly successful
year to this point. Badminton
at the GWSA continues to
grow in popularity and our club
continues to adapt to the needs of
our members. Come check us out
and maybe we’ll see you on the
court!
Book Club 1
Our group meets in the Board
Room on the last Friday of each
month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Diamond Eye” by Kate Quinn. In
November, we will be reading
“The Last High” by Daniel Kalla.
Monthly fee is $3.00. At present,
we have a waiting list.
Bridge
game to enjoy playing bridge in a
friendly and comfortable environment.
We offer both Recreational
No problem! We mix and mingle
with a room full of eager players
so that everyone has a partner for
any of our regularly scheduled
their game. Volunteers are on
using Bidding Boxes.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. We do not teach
classes or have an instructor, so
you should have some experience
in the craft, and members are required
to purchase their own supplies.
Every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon in Room 3. Currently
(Continued on page 9)

(Continued from page 8)
there is a wait list.
See Bunkawithflair.com.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly
group for a game of Canasta. We
contact canastagwsa@gmail.com.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur
players simply out for the joy of
casual chess, although with
enough interest, we could organize
small tournaments. We meet on
the second and fourth Friday of
each month in the Evergreen
Board Room from 10 a.m. to noon
and we ask for $2 per person each
time for the GWSA. And don’t
worry if you don’t have a chess set
— we have three sets as well as a
digital clock for those interested in
a time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available
every Monday from 1-3 p.m. to
answer your questions. We can
help with Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets.
And now we are able to assist iPad
and iPhone users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The
fee is $3 for members of the
GWSA and $5 for non-members.
Please register at the front desk for
each class before joining us in the
Computer Room.
Craft Group
The ladies of the Craft Club are
very busy making beautiful articles
for our store. We continue to make
hats, mitts and scarves to donate to
the needy. We have had a few of
the GWSA members also donating
these items so we can reach as
many as possible. We need wool
donations of all types. Come see
our NEW Treasure Chest, finally
rebuilt.
Guelph Wood Carving Club
est. Circa 1986
A well-established wood carving
club of mostly seniors (both men
and women) has operated in the
Guelph area for decades.
We do carving in the round, like
cartoon characters, birds and wildlife,
spoons, bowls, etc.
Other carving techniques include
relief carving, marquetry, and pyrography.
Training is available.
Meets Monday evening 6:00 pm-
9:00 pm in Evergreen Room 2.
Cribbage
Come on out on a Tuesday afternoon
for a friendly game of Cribbage
in Room 3 of the Evergreen
Centre. The room is open at 12:30
pm and we start playing at 1:00
pm. Everyone is welcome, and we
play 8 games, with prizes at the
end of the afternoon. If you are not
sure how to play, we have instructors
to help.
Darts Club
The sport of Darts is unique in
several ways: the equipment is inexpensive,
it only requires a small
amount of space, and no special
clothing is required. Age, gender,
size or physical abilities have no
bearing on the sport. It is open to
all GWSA members. Darts is a
game for everyone. No special
skills or aptitude required. Just
pick up the darts and throw them!
Darts are available for loan if necessary,
but you are welcome to
bring your own.
This is a great way to make new
friends and really “Take Advantage
of Your Seniority.”
We meet on the Auditorium
Line Dancing
Evergreen Auditorium
Phyllis (519-836-9415)
Donna (519-831-0943)
Line dancing is exercise not only
for the body but the mind as
well. It’s an excuse to get out,
meet new friends, enjoy good music,
and no partner is required. If
you have never line danced before
or need a refresher, the Introduction
to Line Dancing is where to
start. Here you will learn the basic
steps and easier dances to slower
music. The Line Dance Step Tutorial
is an opportunity to learn and
practise steps not taught in the Introduction
to Line Dancing class
and will help prepare you for the
Beyond the Basics classes which
are the next step up from the Introduction
to Line Dancing. The Intermediate
class is for experienced
line dancers looking for a challenge.
Into Focus Photography
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment
ranging from mobile phones and
point-and-shoot cameras to fancy
DSLR models. We share a common
interest in photography as a
hobby and we learn from each other.
New members are always welcome.
Our regular meetings are on
the last Monday of every month in
Room 4.
If you are interested in joining,
contact Stu McCannell
(smccannell@rogers.com).
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Scrabble
Scrabble is back! Come join us
for Scrabble at 1 pm to 3:30 pm
every Thursday in the Hall outside
the Library. All skills from newbie
to expert. Drop-ins are welcome or
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise,
friendship and fun. Membership is
available to all paid-up GWSA
members for a $10 fee every six
months. Register the first time you
play. Beginners are welcome and
instruction is available. The group
plays Tuesdays and Wednesdays
from 1 to 3 p.m.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 65 individuals who have
joined the Silver Strummers. We
welcome ALL skill levels, beginner
through advanced. We will
provide you with all the information
you will need to get started.
If you would like to try the universally
accessible and friendly instrument
of the ukulele, please
contact Eva Quan 519-820-1032.
Silvertones
The Silvertones members practise
weekly in Room 3 on Fridays from
2 to 3:30 p.m. We do have a few
openings so please contact Doreen
Muir @ 519-831-8323 if you
would like to join our choir or
would like more information. You
do not have to be able to read music,
just have a love for singing.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group
of rug hookers at the Evergreen
Centre since February 2022. Traditional
rug hooking is both art and a
craft. Many beautiful and unique
items are made by pulling loops of
fabric or yarn through a stiff, woven
base such as burlap or linen. It
is enjoyable, fun and a very social
hobby. Beginners are welcome and
we will help you get started. The
Rug Hooking Group meets on
Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in Room
2.
Skiing
For the 2023 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Ski
Club. You register and pay for the
Downhill Ski Club at the front
desk of the Evergreen Centre. It
helps to own a 5-7 Pass purchased
from Blue Mountain well before
the start of the ski season. Every
Monday, we carpool by meeting at
the lower Evergreen Parking Lot
by the Enabling Garden at 8:00
am, drive to Blue Mountain, and
return to Guelph by 6:00 pm. Contact
Bob Shearer 519-831-4093 for
Ski Club information.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00
pm and any other time the Evergreen
Centre may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
(Continued on page 11)

(Continued from page 10)
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all paid-up members of
the GWSA on payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current fee of $79.10 (plus
tax) buys you access to the Snooker Room any time
it is open and to all the snooker you care to play.
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun with us? We are averaging
about 24 players a week. We are situated in
the Dining Room. We charge $2 per week and pretty
well all of that goes back to the GWSA. We play
Tuesdays & Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $650 in real casino
chips, and, as we do not play for money, we work on
a point system. The one with the most points each
week is the winner. We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is interested in
playing. Just follow the laughter to find us. We welcome
everyone who wants to play and enjoys company.
We have quite a few ladies playing at present and
would always welcome more. We do not want to become
a men’s club! Remember, you have to be a
member of the GWSA to play.
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters provides an opportunity
for watercolour painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing the same interest,
while encouraging one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration. While we do not offer
classes or lessons, we welcome accomplished watercolour
painters. There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the GWSA is required. We
meet in Room 2 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and
5th Wednesday of the month, and from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. on the third Wednesday.
Writers Club
If you enjoy the power of the pen, come join the
Writers Club. We can toss around ideas and topics to
get the creative juices flowing. Then let’s share the
resulting written shape for constructive comments,
while enjoying the company of others. Please feel
welcome to join the journey. We will meet on the 1st
and 3rd Wednesday of the month in the Board Room,
from 1-3 p.m. There is a weekly fee of $2 for the
GWSA. Contact Susan Jackson 519-265-3246.
ROBERT MUNSCH EVENT AT THE ENABLING GARDEN ON AUGUST 19
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association is a proud sponsor of the ever popular Tea ‘n’ Tales held in
partnership with the staff at the Enabling Gardens in Riverside Park.
On Saturday, August 19, members of the GWSA Storytelling group, the Guelph Guild of Storytellers, Puppets
‘n’ Paints, and Puppets Elora joined talents to present Robert Munsch’s famous story “The Paper Bag
Princess”. Robert Munsch was pleased and proud to watch our puppet and storyteller rendition.
In fact, Robert Munsch has given us permission to perform four more of his stories next summer!
The puppeteer/facepainters are Andy Timmerman, Linda
Smith, and Ellen Webb
The storyteller is Sya van Geest. And of course, there is
the one and only Robert, enjoying it all.
VISUAL ARTS
Landscape Painting
In this course, students will learn how to create artistic
representations of natural environments such as
mountains, forests, waters, fields, coastlines and sunsets.
Landscape painting can be created using a variety of
water-based medium: acrylic, watercolour and gouache.
Although the realistic representation of the natural world
will be the main approach, exploring landscape through
illusion is not excluded. The course will cover all that is
needed to create expressive and dynamic paintings: basic
techniques, colour mixing, tonal values, elements of
composition, effects of atmospheric perspective, the ways
to simplify the shapes and forms, and effective editing of
photographic references. Throughout the course, there
will be plenty of short demos, usually at the beginning of
the class. The course is intended for beginners and
intermediates. Just bring your supplies, your passion for
painting, and whatever experience you have and you will
grow as an artist through expanding your observational
and artistic skills.
activity plays an essential role in the treatment of
osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’ or applying a load on our
“Twenty” by James Grippando
by Diane Dyke
If you like legal thrillers, you might like to check out James Grippando. He is a lawyer and an
award-winning author of 29 novels. His most recent novel called “Twenty” takes place in Florida.
Jack Swytech is a lawyer, married to FBI agent, Andie. Andie and their daughter Righley are
caught up in a school shooting at the elite school Righley attends. Before the day is over, Andie’s
friend’s son Xavier, confesses to the shooting.
Jack did not want to become involved in this case. He would be defending a confessed killer.
However, he eventually is ordered to represent the young man. But, to his surprise, Xavier refuses
to talk. Even finding a witness does not help explain the events of that fateful day. To complicate
things further, Xavier’s father is a Muslim. As you might suspect, racial tensions and fears of
terrorism take hold in the community.
Grippando also explores the fears and tensions that arise between people in the school and
community when such a tragedy takes place. How do people respond when the safety of their
children is threatened?
Grippando expertly takes us through the investigation in an easy-to-follow manner.
But, no one will be able to predict the surprise ending. Set aside some time once you start reading
“Twenty.” You will not want to put it down.
