Huge turnout for Kaikoura Hop
By JOHN COSGROVE
The full sign went out early at the
Kaikoura Hop last Saturday.
The Kaikoura Racecourse display
area was overflowing by 11.30am with
the hundreds of cars attending the
annual car spectacular.
Organiser Doug O’Callahan says the
13th annual show was ahuge success
with thousands of spectators viewing
over 1200 cars
‘‘It is possibly our biggest show ever,’’
he says.
‘‘We closed off just before lunch time
because we were so full. We were
packed.’’
‘‘We couldn’t have had abetter day
with the weather.
‘‘It was fantastic.
‘‘People and cars came from all over
the country.’’
He says the support from the Kaikoura
community and the car community was
‘‘amazing.’’
It was agood result for avery small
team of dedicated people who start
planning over 16 months ago, he says.
This year’s show attracted alarger
attendance from hot rod clubs and car
enthusiasts travelling from the North
Island.
One of the many caravancar combos
on show had travelled from Whangarei,
while large groups of car enthusiasts
drove in their custom or classic cars
from the Nelson/Marlborough area,
Dunedin, Christchurch, Invercargill,
Wellington and the Wairarapa
Ashburton custom car owners Nigel
Smith and his daughter Caitlin Smith
bought two classic Holdens to the hop.
She drove a1974 HQ Holden Monaro
while dad drove his ‘53 FJ Holden hot
rod.
It was the third time Nigel has
attended the hop.
‘‘You only have to look at the day. It is
an awesome event to come here and see
custom cars from all over.’’
John Stanway drove his Holden HZ 1
Tonner from Dunedin to attend the
show for the first time, and was quite
excited to be there.
Gary Morton of Waikuku Beach had
only finished building his 1941 Chrysler
Agathering of car enthusiasts ... Some of the thousands of spectators, and cars, attending the 13th annual Kaikoura Hop.
Royal Businessman’s Coupe acouple of
days before the hop and was happy with
the response it received from other
owners on its debut.
‘‘It’s avery unique car, it was made
during WW2 and I’ve never seen acar
with atwo metre deep boot before.’’
It has taken Gary nearly 28 years to
convert his Chrysler into acustom built
hot rod, which was awarded one of the
John Turner says they knew some were
interested, but it was pleasing to know
there is astrong levelofinterest by locals
in buying the property.
He had posted an advertisement asking
for expressions of interest in the property
at 44 Mountainview Road in Culverden.
The Presbyterianchurchwas built in
the late1920’s on ahalf acre site.
It contains two intricate stainedglass
windows, one titled ‘‘Christ the Shepherd
and Sheep Farmer’’,which was designed
by Beverley Shore Bennett and made by
Roy Miller in 1973.
The church has beenclosedfor some
time following the creation of the cooperating
parish in the Amuri District.
Mr Turner says likemany other country
Call to ban commercial whitebaiting
BY SHELLEY TOPP
Afreshwater ecologist believes New
Zealand’scommercial whitebaiting
should be banned.
Mark Taylor,afreshwater ecologist,
with aspecial interest in the spawning
habits of inanga, and an environmental
consultantatChristchurch company
Aquatic Ecology, also believes the
Department of Conservation (DOC) is not
doingenough to prevent New Zealand’s
whitebait speciesfrom becomingextinct.
He has spent more than 38 years
researching spawning areas lookingfor
whitebait eggs, and was one of three
guestspeakers at the Waimakariri
Biodiversity Trust's final lecture in its
Winter Seriesofpublic talks at the
Waikuku Beach Halllast week.
Mark spoke about the work being done
in Waimakariri riversresearching the
spawning habitats of inanga,New
Zealand’s smallest whitebait species.
New Zealand whitebait are the
juveniles of six species of fish, and four
of these have adeclining or threatened
conservation status.
After his lecture Mark saidthat inanga,
New Zealand’smost commonly caught
species, had adecliningstatus.
‘‘Lossofhabitat is ahuge problem but
so is commercialfishing,’’ Mark said.
‘‘Thatiswhere the black market comes
from.’’
He supportsthe retention of
recreational whitebait fishing, but said
commercial whitebaiting should to be
banned.
‘‘There is too much illegal fishing
activity happeningaroundthat and DOC
don’t seem to havethe resources to
manageit,’’ he said.
He would like DOC to encourage
peopletouse the SnapSend Solve app
on their mobile phones to report illegal
fishing activity to help them police
whitebaiting better.
Other guest speakers were
Waimakariri bird expertBev Alexander,
amemberofthe AshleyRakahuri
different speciesofbirdsvisiting or
residing in the AshleyRakahuri River
and estuary area.These birdsincluded
the Wrybill, the only birdinthe world
Rare birds put at risk in estuary
By SHELLEY TOPP
The public is being asked to help
identify two quadbikers and a
motorcyclist who tore through ararebird
nesting area at AshleyRakahuri
River Estuary last weekend.
Last Sunday's incident, along the
lower reaches of the estuary, breached
the Northern Pegasus Bay bylaw and
was photographed by the Ashley
Rakahuri Rivercare Group’s operations
manager Grant Davey.
He reported the incident to the
Waimakariri District Council’s Green
Space team.
Green Space community projects
officer, Mike Kwant, says this time of
year is acritical period for birdlife so it
was disappointing to see these riders
ignore clear warning signs at the estuary
banning vehicles from the area.
‘‘Braided river birds such as the
wrybill and banded dotterel are
breeding and nesting with nests that are
not easily visible especially when
driving avehicle or riding amotor bike,’’
he says.
‘‘Avoiding damage to nests and
minimising disturbance is critical to
their successful attempts to breed and
nest. Any disturbance of birdlife
whether potentially destructive vehicle
damage or disturbance such as from
dogs needs to be avoided,’’ he says.
‘‘Community support is key to
addressing issues like this and we will
act on any information the public can
HAVEAGO DAY
Lawn
Bowls
bylaw.’’
However, Grant says the bikes were
right out on the flats where the wrybill
feed at low tide, and more needed to be
done to prevent this kind of behaviour at
the estuary and along the river.
‘‘It is avery important habitat for
many different species of birds and I
don't think it is any exaggeration to say
that it is ahabitat in crisis,’’ he says.
‘‘Every time Igotothe estuary Isee
either rules being broken, or evidence of
them having recently been broken and
from what Ihave seen, the disturbance
is getting worse,’’ he says. ‘‘I recently did
some drone photography of the area,
with council’s permission, and on this
you can see the extent of the vehicle
traffic in the area where they are not
allowed to go. ‘‘There are also dog tracks
everywhere they are not allowed to go.’’
The same thing is happening further
along the river.
‘‘We have blocks in place at almost all
the entrances to the river, but it is
impossible to stop motorbikes and quad
bikes.’’
Even though the Waimakariri Council
and Environment Canterbury are doing
what they can to enforce the Northern
Pegasus Bay bylaw ‘‘they have no teeth’’,
Grant says.
‘‘The Waimakariri Council is actually
pushing ahead with reviewing the bylaw
even though they know that unless
central government gives them teeth, it
will fail.''
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Tamariki (children) at Te Kura o
Tuahiwi will soon be learning to read
stories about their whānau.
Acollaboration between the school,
Tuahiwi Marae and Te Whare Wānanga
oWaitaha (University of Canterbury)
researchers has turned five Tuahiwibased
stories into children’s picture
books to help the school’s structured
literacy programme.
The books will be published in Te Reo
and have been illustrated by local Māori
artists Christine Harvey, Tōmairangi
Taiepa and Akeake Taiepa.
Former Te Kura oTuahiwi principal
Melanie TaitePitama says the school
became astructured literacy pilot
school three years ago.
As abilingual school with full
immersion classes, the teachers soon
found there were no resources in Te
Reo.
‘‘We decided it was beneficial to have
books written by our people, for our
people and in Te Reo, and the university
was able to find some funding,’’ Ms
TaitePitama says.
The stories are about the marae and
growing up in the kainga (village).
The university’s research team, led by
education senior lecturer Dr Amy Scott,
met with local kaumātua (elders) and
collected more than 20 hours of kōrero
(conversation) on video.
The stories included experiences of
kapa haka, mahinga kai (food gathering),
mahi īnanga (whitebaiting), the history
of the Kaiapoi Pā and intergenerational
experiences of the marae.
The footage was shared with local
rangatahi (former Tuahiwi pupils) to
choose the best stories.
Dr Scott says the research team will
continue to work with Ngāi Tūāhuriri to
research the impact of these stories in
the learning of 5to8yearolds at the
kura (school).
‘‘The project is already showing the
value of having stories immortalised and
working in collaboration.
‘‘We’re creating ablueprint for other
marae and iwi, and how they might go
through the process of capturing their
own stories as children’s books.’’
Te Kura oTuahiwi teacher Andrea Te
OhaereFox says the school now has the
use of some Te Reo resources, but she is
looking forward to having the new
Tuahiwi books in class.
‘‘In the past we’ve had to make our own
resources, or translated English
resources into Te Reo.
‘‘So to have someone make resources
for us has been great. It will be really
cool when we’ve got those actual local
stories for this area and we will be
learning them along with the tamariki.’’
The books will remain the property of
Ngāi Tūāhuriri.
Tuahiwi Marae kaikaranga (caller) Liz
Kereru said the videos and manuscripts
would be returned to marae’s archives.
‘‘Our long term goal will be to donate
the books into the local libraries so
people can share the stories and we will
be gifting the stories back to the
whānau.’’
Drive 4Change to arrive in NC
BY JAMIE MCFADDEN,
Groundswell Environmental spokesman
North Canterbury and Kaikoura
residents will see tractors passing
through our region on State Highway 1
en route to Auckland from Sunday
September 24 to Tuesday, September 26.
Anyone is welcome to join them or
wave in support as they pass.
What motivates two southern farmers,
Bryce McKenzie, and Laurie Paterson,
to drive tractors the length of New
Zealand under the banner Drive 4
Change?
They recognise the election in October
is the most important in their lifetime —
not just for rural New Zealand, but for
all New Zealanders.
At stake is not just our farming
heritage, but our natural environment,
iconic landscapes, and way of life.
Do we want acountry gobbled up by
corporates and overseas investors,
covered in pines, and over run with
pests and weeds as farmers are pushed
off the land?
Or do we want acountry where the
world’s most emissions efficient food
producing farming families are valued
stewards of the land, biodiversity and
cultural values are an asset, and farmers
who foster environmental stewardship
are acknowledged and supported rather
than penalized?
Do we want acountry where local
decision making and democracy are
paramount, with councils given the
autonomy to make decisions and
implement actions based on their own
community’s needs?
Or do we want acountry increasingly
controlled by the state with unworkable
regulations and loss of personal
freedoms?
While Ihave followed politics for
many years, Ihave never been so moved
to write about an election publicly.
In my various roles in local
government, farming groups and now as
Groundswell environmental
spokesperson, Iamaware of the impact
of existing and future policies stemming
from the current Labour/Greens
government.
In my work as aconservationist and
native restoration business, the
government policies being rolled out are
delivering detrimental outcomes for our
natural heritage –the worst since the
development subsidies pre1984.
This election is aturning point in our
history.
And while the differences between the
Instore & Online
18-24 September
major political parties may not seem
huge, the outcome will be.
Idonot say it lightly —this election is
about the survival of family farming,
rural communities, natural heritage,
respect for people and property, local
decision making, and democracy.
Groundswell's Drive 4Change is about
all of these.
If you too care about these issues, then
you are welcome to join any part of the
trip as Bryce and Laurie travel north.
Itinerary times can be found on
Groundswell’s social media.
The tractors arrive on Sunday
afternoon (September 24) in
Christchurch, meeting at Speights Ale
House, Tower Junction 4.30pm.
On Monday September 25 they depart
Christchurch after 8am heading up State
Highway 1tobeinAmberley around
9.30am.
They will pass through Cheviot about
11.30am and arrive in Kaikoura at 4pm.
On Tuesday, September 26, Drive 4
Change travels to Blenheim. Times are
approximate.
Speaking engagements will be
advertised or impromptu where
opportunities arise.
And most of all make your October
vote count.
HanmerSprings storm
Nor’west galesinNorth Canterbury last weekend, with at least
one gust over 100kph relocated outdoor furniture, swabs, rubbish
bins, and the town’s sharing shed.
Firefighters battled the wind to attend fires throughout North
Canterbury, includingashed, afire in aHanmer Springs reserve
causedbypower wires hitting the ground when atree fell, and
scrub fires.
Karryn Fletcher, of Hanmer Holiday Homes, said the winds
were terrifying especially for those new to the village.
Those experiencingthe force of a strong nor’west for the first
time had knownthe windcould pick up planter pots and smash
them, tip over barbecuesand send outdoor furnitureflying.
Her team at HHH was assessing the damage on Monday and
trying to find and match up squabs, cushions, outdoor furniture
Karryn said the sharing shed decided totravel, and ended up
Kaikoura speedlimits
Kaikōura residents are being askedfor feedback on proposed new
speed limits.
The Kaikōura District Council approved its draft speed
management plan earlier this month.
Chief executive Will Doughty said the main change was
reducing the speed on unsealed roads from 100kph to 80kph.
‘‘Most people are already travellingwell below100kph on
unsealed roads, but for others they treat it as atargetrather than
Waka Kotahi recommended reducing speedlimits for unsealed
roads to 60kph,but the councilwas ‘‘comfortable’’ with 80kph, Mr
New trails being considered for park
By SHELLEY TOPP
New horse trails and mountain
bike tracks are being considered
for Waimakariri’s Tūhaitara
Coastal Park.
The ideas were raised at a
meeting hosted by Nick
Chapman, the general manager
of the Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara
Trust which manages the park.
The meeting at the park’s
Woodend Beach headquarters
was held to establish atrack
network group, and provide an
overview for the group on what
the trust envisioned for the park.
It also aims to provide
information about future
upgrades and discuss ‘‘what our
the park’’, Nick says.
‘‘Establishing this new track
network group gives us an
opportunity to enhance the value
of the park to awide range of
users, while creating and
maintaining fit for purpose track
networks.
‘‘The initial meeting was very
positive with people from
Waikuku, Woodend and Pines
Beach attending. We had
walkers, bikers, horse riders and
horse trainers at the table
discussing where we are at, and
what the future track
infrastructure could look like,’’
he says.
‘‘We identified the need to
By the end of the oneday
competition, five of theseven
Empire teams had scored first
places in their classes while the
other two were awarded second
places.
Empire Athleticsprogramme
director Michelle Cumming says
all their teams and individual
competitors did really well.
‘‘For the novice teams thiswas
their first competition and it was
great to have it held so close to
homeatthe MainPower Indoor
Stadium.’’
She says the club entered some
verybig teams, which included a
numberofboys.‘‘Boys like young
Monty Ansley worked really hard
to be on the team. Boys bring alot
to the sport, not only in training,
but also in competitions.’’
rationalise the trails better in the
northern sections of the park and
will mark out and cut in new
horse trails in the forestry block
between the coastal protection
pines and Pegasus Walkway.
‘‘We will also look at scoping a
series of mountain bike tracks in
the block south of Woodend.’’
Nick has put together amockup
map of future tracks and trails
based on the feedback from the
group meeting, and the track
network group will help to gather
feedback from the broader
community about the new plans.
If feedback from the wider
community ‘‘is all good, we will
begin implementation of the
plan’’, Nick said.
Chairs —all shapes, colours, sizes and
designs —have attracted arecord
attendance on opening night at
Kaiapoi’s Art on the Quay Gallery
The Chair exhibition also includes a
silent auction on four of the chairs
exhibited, with proceeds going to
conservation work on the Kaiapoi River.
The four chairs available to buy in the
silent auction have been painted and
decorated by Kaiapoi artists, Christine
Watton, Ruby Whitty, Paul Smith and
Cheryl Muirson.
Kaiapoi upholsterer Nigel Cook,
organised the exhibition and silent
auction.
He has work in the event along with
many other chair makers and artists.
Nigel was keen to organise an
exhibition of chairs after visiting
galleries in Milan, Korea Australia and
the United States where he found areas
devoted to chairs.
‘‘In those countries there is is much
interest in including design and art
together,’’ he says.
He is thrilled with how the Kaiapoi
exhibition has turned out.
All of the exhibits in the multimedia
exhibition involve chairs in some way.
The exhibits include Reflections of
Let It Be, aquirky, musicalthemed
chairstool created by Nigel’s son Jason,
who calls his work ‘‘just awee stool upcycled
from the eco store with an old
guitar neck looking for ahome’’.
Nigel’s dad Bill Cook also has achair
in the exhibition which he designed in
1951, and finally built when he retired in
1984.
There is also adeckchair which
floated to the surface from the cruise
liner Mikhail Lermontov, which sank in
the Marlborough Sounds in 1986, and
Alice’s World, Christine Gayton’s
extraordinary exhibit using creative
junk.
Kaiapoi multimedia artist Mark
Larsen has also contributed an exhibit,
The Chair of Knowledge, which was
inspired by Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of
gravity, and Nigel Watson ‘‘a builder by
trade, artist by nature’’ has created a
playful nod to the popular idiom ‘‘sitting
on the fence’’, with his exhibit, of the
same name.
Nigel's chair is made from disused
farmfence materials including barbedwire
upholstery, making it amost
uncomfortablelooking place to sit.
The Chair closes on October 18.
People interested in bidding on the
four chairs in the silent auction can do
so by adding their bid and contact details
to alist underneath the television at the
gallery.
Biodiversity projects are continuing to
The Hurunui District Council stepped
partnership with Environment
Mrs Blacksaid the committee
proposal had been put on the
backburner due to Covid and the heavy
workload of government reform.
‘‘The lackofacommitteeisnot
‘‘We want the community voice to be
at the centre of any process.’’
She said the council had kept in
regular contact with Environment
Canterbury, which reported to Hurunui
District Council meetings.
‘‘Our relationship with Environment
‘‘We have different roles and
Glass to be recycled
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Hundreds of tonnes of glass bottles and
jars collected in Kaikoura are now being
recycled ratherthan being usedfor
drainage and coveronthe landfill.
The initiative is thankstoapartnership
between Innovative Waste Kaikoura, the
GlassPackaging Forumand 5R Solutions
in Christchurch.
A$20,000 grant from the GlassPackaging
Forum(GPF) helpedInnovative Waste
Kaikoura(IWK) build storage bunkers to
make transport viable.
The recently completed bunkers hold
glasswhichhas beensortedinto its three
base colours (clear, green, brown) before
beingfreighted to the glass hub at 5R
Solutions in Christchurch.
It then goes to Auckland to be recycled
into new glass containers.
IWK General Manager Jacki Remihana
says to make transportingthe glass
economically viable, it needs to be
aggregated,sostorage bunkers are
essential.
She says previously IWK collected glass
and crushed it on site to use it as landfill
coverand drainage.
It was now being collected and coloursorted,
which is considered industry best
practice.
‘‘We’re going to roll out new kerbside
bins to households to colour sort their
glass for pick up. This will start on October
1,’’ Jacki says.
GPF Scheme Manager Dominic Salmon
says helping organisations like IWK
improve their glasscollection and
recycling is aprimaryfocus.
‘‘Glass is infinitely recyclable and
reducesemissions becausethe glass
furnace can run at lowertemperatures
when you use recycled material.
‘‘Innovative Waste Kaikoura do agreat
job collecting about500 tonnesofglass a
year, so were really happytohelp them get
it recycled,’’ Dominic says.
North Canterbury’s threecouncils are
sticking withFirst Past thePost.
The Hurunui andKaikōuraDistrict
Councilsare in the midst of
representationreviews, but have decided
to stick withFirst Pastthe Post, in
preference to STV (Single Transferable
Vote).
HurunuiMayor Marie Black said the
council accepted arecommendation from
its working group to stay withFirst Past
government elections.
‘‘There wasagreatdealofdiscussion
on themerits of First Pastthe Postand
STV.
‘‘STV is averydifferent systemand it
was felt First Pastthe Postwas familiar
and changing systems may lead to a
decrease in voter turnout.’’
Under First Past thePost,voters vote
for theirpreferred candidate, whereas
under STV voters rankthe candidates in
order of preference.
Discussions are continuingonwhether
a Māoriward should be established in the
Hurunui district.
Mrs Black saidthe councilisseeking
the viewsofTe Rūnanga oNgāi Tūāhuriri
and Te Rūnanga oKaikōura.
‘‘Itisimportant we canvass those views
and makeadecision based on the
evidence.’’
SpeakingataKaikōuraDistrict Council
meetingearlier this month, corporate
services senior manager Peter Kearney
said therewere prosand conswith both
systems.
‘‘FirstPast the Post is well understood,
butthe Future for Local Government
Reporthas stated apreferencefor STV.
‘‘The data suggestsit(STV)isslightly
fairer, butpeople find it harder to
understand andthere can be alater
release of the end result.’’
Councillorsvoted to stick with First
Past thePostfor the2025 and 2028
elections.
Cr Robby Roche said FirstPastthe Post
‘‘fitsour community’’, while Cr Kevin
Heays said‘‘simple is best’’.
Thecouncil is engaging with Te
RūnangaoKaikōura on thequestion of a
Māoriward.
TheWaimakaririDistrictCouncil
decidedtostay withFirst Pastthe Post at
itsMay council meeting,Mayor Dan
Thecouncils haduntilSeptember 19 to
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Big Brothers Big Sisters Month has been
launched and an ambitiousfundraising
campaign has begun to raise $30,000 in 30
days.
support for the local youth mentoring
charity whichmatchesvulnerable
‘‘Thelist goes on.
‘‘Nothing is too big or too small. You
Local artists to contribute to Wild in Art
By SHELLEY TOPP
The designs of four North Canterbury
artists have been chosen for the Elmer’s
Ōtautahi Elephant Trail fundraiser.
The WildinArt event is being held to
raise funds for the Laura Fergusson
Brain Injury Trust and willfeature 30
large elephants, individuallydesigned
by artists, including North Canterbury’s
Mel Eaton, Ashleigh Ritchie,Mandy
Palmerand Laura Hewetson.
Each elephant will eventually be put
on public displayinatrail around
Christchurchand surrounding areas,
including Kaiapoi and Rangiora.
The trail for the Elmer’s Ōtautahi
Elephant project has not been finalised
yet but the North Canterbury artists say
they are hopingRangiora's Elephant
Park will be included in it and that one
of their elephantswill be featured
there,and possiblyeven find a
permanent home alongside the park’s
future.
Once the Elmer’s Ōtautahi Elephant
Trail elephantshave been installed on
the trail it will be featured on the Wild
Six decades of service to Rangiora celebrated by Lions
Sixtyyears of community serviceisbeing
this year.
The achievement was markedduring an
Guests at the anniversary function
included Lions District Governor 202E
Trust’s marketing and community
manager,Jasmine Harris,says they are
still seekingelephant sponsors for the
trail which is free to the publicand
runs from November25until February
18, nextyear.
Once the elephants have been
showcased on the trail there willbe an
opportunity to buy thematanauction
on March 7next year.
Jasminesays people from aroundthe
world can bid on the elephants, but
bidders are mostlikely to be ``mainly
local’’ because transportation can be
challenging.
International Day of Older Persons is
being celebrated on Sunday, October 1.
To celebrate, the annual Waimakariri
Older Person’s Expo is being held on
October 2, at the Rangiora RSA, to which
local residents and the community are
invited.
The Expo, which opens its doors at
10am is free to attend.
Awide range of community
organisations will be hosting stalls
including Rangiora Stroke Club,
Dementia Canterbury, Age Concern,
Driving Miss Daisy, North Canterbury
MiniBus Trust, Presbyterian Support
and many more.
There will be raffles and spot prizes
available, before the expo finishes at 12
It will be followed by alight lunch and
open for visitors to buy ameal.
There will also be entertainment and
live music to enjoy throughout the
afternoon.
Vicki Lucas, Presbyterian Support’s
Enliven Area Manager, says it’s
important to recognise the positive
contribution older people make in the
community.
‘‘Many are still working or
volunteering, some care for partners,
older parents or grandchildren.’’
Vicki says by 2034, just over afifth of
New Zealand’s total population —
around 1.2 million people —will be over
65.
‘‘Older New Zealanders are healthier,
living longer, and taking an active and
positive approach to ageing.
‘‘Being healthy and maintaining
connections are vital to the wellbeing of
older people so they can lead happy,
connected and fulfilling lives.’’
The International Day of Older
Persons has been celebrated in the
Waimakariri region for over 30 years,
and events are organised by acommittee
of community members and providers.
In recent years this expo did not
eventuate due to Covid limitations and
potential risks.
With restrictions now lifted the
committee are looking forward to
holding this again and wish to thank the
Rangiora RSA for donating their venue.
Paddock becomes native habitat
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
An unused piece of NorthCanterbury
farmland has become aconservation
area rich in biodiversity.
Eight years ago Pāmu (Landcorp)
New Zealand completedanecological
survey of a2.5 hectare paddockwhich
was overgrown on its Eyrewell dairy
farm, nearOxford.
The survey found the paddockwas
home to the rare Eyrewell skink, which
were living under old car doors, and
other interesting wildlife.
Conservationalist Ruud Kleinpaste,
known as ‘‘the bugman’’,and
Conservation Volunteers New Zealand
got involved and with the help of local
school children, the paddock is slowly
being restored into anativehabitat.
Last week Pāmu New Zealand hosted
students fromWest Eyreton and
Swannanoa Schools, who spentpart of
the day looking for skinks and insects.
‘‘They are lookingclosely at the
landscape and seeing things my old
eyes can’t see anymore,’’ Mr Kleinpaste
said.
Volunteers also helped the children
to plantkanuka, mānuka and matagouri
trees.
Conservation Volunteers New
Zealandregional manager Hamish
Fairbairn said he had been bringing
volunteers to the sitesince 2018.
‘‘It is aboutbringingpeople together
and spending time in nature, planting
trees and restoring habitat.’’
Three speciesofskink have been
found at the site, along withcrickets,
the rare Alexander beetle and trapdoor
spiders.
The children also got ainvestigate ‘‘a
crime scene’’, after the remains of a
rabbit were found.
Crime scene ... The bug man, Ruud Kleinpaste investigates ‘‘a crime scene’’ with children
from Swannanoa School after finding the remains of arabbit.
PHOTO: DAVID HILL
The prime suspect was a kāhu,
harrier hawk.
Mr Kleinpaste saidthe site was agood
example of what how farms could
operate alongside nature.
He hoped to encourage teachers and
childrentobecome ‘‘naturenerds’’.
The children tookaway ideas about
what theycould do to enhance the
biodiversity of their school gardens.
‘‘If they became natureliterate, these
kids are getting the tools to look after
the planet thatmygeneration
destroyed,’’ Mr Kleinpastesaid.
proposed for farmland outside ofWaipara.
It will combine agriculture, horticulture and
energy production on the same site and could be
we find ourselves in.
Meet and talk with the development team and
New Zealand Wool Carpet Set for Council
Owned Facilities.
Waimakariri District Council is stepping up its
approach to sustainable practices in Council
owned buildings.
At its September meeting the Council voted on a
Notice of Motion brought by Councillor Al Blackie
and supported by Council sustainability portfolio
holder Councillor Niki Mealings.
Cr Blackie requested that the Waimakariri District
Council consider wherever practical, that all
carpets installed or replaced in Council owned
facilities be manufactured from New Zealand
wool or New Zealand wool blend. The request was
agreed by Council.
The recommendation was intended to support local
manufacturing in New Zealand and for Council to
be aleader in using sustainable products within its
building network wherever practical.
Cr Blackie says the decision to move to using
New Zealand wool products would ensure that
Council is taking amore ethical procurement
approach to support our rural community.
“Nylon carpets are predominantly made of
plastic and we don’t need any more plastic in
our environment. Wool provides the option ofa
naturally occurring renewable resource.
“There are new commercial-grade wool products
that are comparable in both cost and durability to
synthetic carpets,” Cr Blackie says.
Council iscurrently replacing (on average) $40,000
worth of carpet per year across its building network.
This generally services the renewal of up to
two buildings.
To move to wool, it is anticipated that this figure
would increase per annum to renew two buildings
with new carpet. But that additional expense is
expected to be low.
Cr Blackie says the sustainability and
environmental health benefits of switching to
wool far out way the costs associated.
“It ticks all the boxes. It’s doable, it comes at a
minimal extra cost of around only $1 extra per
rate payer.”
Council has several significant projects within
the next Long Term Plan, including the Pegasus
Community Centre, the Ravenswood Community
Centre, and renewals to the Rangiora Library.
Council also renews (on average) six to seven
pensioner units per year.
The plan is for these new facilities to now be fitted
out with New Zealand wool carpet.
“This is asmall step but one in the right direction,”
Cr Blackie says.
It was important to hear Health NZ apologise fortheir lack
of communication over the delays in after-hoursservices
at mypublicmeeting at theend of April, andgood news
thatthe voices of Waimakaririresidents were heard with
theannouncement by HealthNZthatlocal GPswill be
