TrevorStanleyJoblin is aname that hasbeen associatedwithmotoringevents in Canterbury for someyears. Now in his 80shis enthusiasm and ability to organisesuccessful events has notdiminished. In 1986 he startedanAll Ford Day.The event wastohave a10yearlifespan. Other eventsorganised haveincluded a Christchurchtwin riverseveningparade 1999 to 2001, and theHenryFord MemorialRallyfrom 1994 to 2013. Hiscurrent contribution is amonthly assembly forclassic cars—theNorth CanterburyClassicGathering —which started in 2021. This Sunday an AllFordDay will be held at the Leithfield venue,the first such gathering for Fords only. Trevorishopeful that theentry might exceedthe 492 —the turn out forthe 1995 dayout. TheNorth Canterbury Classic Gathering is heldatarurallocation on State HighwayOne, near Leithfield,some 40 minutesfrom Christchurchand near therural town of Amberley. Amberley became Trevorand wife Lorraine’shomefollowing the devastation of the Christchurch earthquakes. WhileTrevor continued to organise classic tours, the idea for aregularcar show didnot materialiseuntil 2021. Therurallocation hadalargecafe,The BetterHalf Kitchen and Bar, on site with an associated adventure park. Theadventurepark no longtrades leaving the land ideal for displaying cars. The Hurunui andKaikōuraDistrict Councilsare in the midst of representationreviews, but have decided to stick withFirst Pastthe Post, in preference to STV (Single Transferable Vote). HurunuiMayor Marie Black said the council accepted arecommendation from its working group to stay withFirst Past the Post(FPP) for the 2025and 2028local government elections. ‘‘There wasagreatdealofdiscussion on themerits of First Pastthe Postand STV. ‘‘STV is averydifferent systemand it was felt First Pastthe Postwas familiar and changing systems may lead to a decrease in voter turnout.’’ Under First Past thePost,voters vote for theirpreferred candidate, whereas under STV voters rankthe candidates in order of preference. Discussions are continuingonwhether a Māoriward should be established in the Hurunui district. Mrs Black saidthe councilisseeking the viewsofTe Rūnanga oNgāi Tūāhuriri and Te Rūnanga oKaikōura. ‘‘Itisimportant we canvass those views and makeadecision based on the evidence.’’ SpeakingataKaikōuraDistrict Council meetingearlier this month, corporate services senior manager Peter Kearney said therewere prosand conswith both systems. ‘‘FirstPast the Post is well understood, butthe Future for Local Government Reporthas stated apreferencefor STV. ‘‘The data suggestsit(STV)isslightly fairer, butpeople find it harder to understand andthere can be alater release of the end result.’’ Councillorsvoted to stick with First Past thePostfor the2025 and 2028 elections. Thecouncils haduntilSeptember 19 to issueapublic notice on thepreferred voting option. VotershaveuntilFebruary21 to requestapoll on theelectoralsystem, if 5 percent of registered votersinthe district signapetition. TheWaimakariri council consulted withTe Rūnanga oNgāi Tūāhuririonthe question of a Māoriward duringthe last representationreview in 2021. At thetime the rūnanga indicated it was satisfiedwith theexisting hapū and council relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters big fundraiser By ROBYN BRISTOW Big Brothers Big Sisters Month has been launched and an ambitiousfundraising campaign has begun to raise $30,000 in 30 days. Manager Ellie Le Gros is encouraging businesses, schools and community groups in NorthCanterbury to showtheir support for the local youth mentoring charity whichmatchesvulnerable childreninthe community withsafe and trusted adultrole models. He says thereare manyways to get involved in the fundraisingchallenge — an office challenge, agolf tournament, a bake off,orsausage sizzle. ‘‘Thelist goes on. ‘‘Nothing is too big or too small.You can choose any day in September to hold afundraisingevent.’’ Rangiora recruitment company, Elevate Talented PeoplePlacement,was one of the firsttojoin the campaign. ‘‘Dressing up in passionate purple is a great way to share our passion withour clients, candidatesand friends, encouraging them to become involved in an awesome organisation,” says AngeliqueMattsen, arecruitment consultant. ‘‘Elevate Recruitmentknowsthat our little contributiontoBig BrothersBig Sisters of NorthCanterbury can make a big difference in our next generations’ lives,’’she says.
