HS lifeguard honoured By JOHN COSGROVE Chantelle Hutton,Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools lifeguard team leader, was honoured recently with aLifeguard of the Year Merit Award. The award was made at the RecreationAotearoa <strong>2023</strong> National Aquatics Awards. Chantelle hasbeen alifeguard at the thermalpools complexfor 10 years, and hasworked there for over 13 years. Judges said she was a‘‘fantastic asset’’ to the facility, and was clearly avalued member of the team which had reallymade a mark in the Hanmer community. Chantelle says she is feeling pretty good about the award,but she was justdoingher job. ‘‘It’s pretty good to be part of a team who are working so well together,’’she says. As the teamleader at the hot poolsshe has ateam of 10 to 12 lifeguards to lookafter as they watchover the23pools in the complex. ‘‘We are primarilyfocused on safety, customerserviceand making sure everyone is having a good time.’’ RecreationAotearoa aquatics programme manager, Rhiann Collins,says the lifeguard competition was agreat opportunity for lifeguards fromall over Aotearoa to showcase their skills, teamwork and leadership in afun way. ‘‘TheAquaticsAwardsare always highlyanticipated within Honoured for service ... Thecouncil agreed to allocateadditional land for the dogpark for an agilityarea to be established, andtogive dogs greater opportunities for enrichment.
