Local artists to contribute to Wild in Art<br />

The designs of four <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

artists have been chosen for the Elmer’s<br />

Ōtautahi Elephant Trail fundraiser.<br />

The WildinArt event is being held to<br />

raise funds for the Laura Fergusson<br />

Brain Injury Trust and willfeature 30<br />

large elephants, individuallydesigned<br />

by artists, including <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>’s<br />

Mel Eaton, Ashleigh Ritchie,Mandy<br />

Palmerand Laura Hewetson.<br />

Each elephant will eventually be put<br />

on public displayinatrail around<br />

Christchurchand surrounding areas,<br />

including Kaiapoi and Rangiora.<br />

The trail for the Elmer’s Ōtautahi<br />

Elephant project has not been finalised<br />

yet but the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> artists say<br />

they are hopingRangiora's Elephant<br />

Park will be included in it and that one<br />

of their elephantswill be featured<br />

there,and possiblyeven find a<br />

permanent home alongside the park’s<br />

pink elephantatsome pointinthe<br />

future.<br />

Six decades of service to Rangiora celebrated by Lions<br />

Sixtyyears of community serviceisbeing<br />

celebrated by the LionsClub of Rangiora<br />

this year.<br />

The achievement was markedduring an<br />

anniversary function held at the Rangiora<br />

RSA Club when the extraordinary service<br />

of some Lions Club of Rangiora members<br />

was also officially recognised.<br />

In Art website, showcasing the project,<br />

its artists and installation sites all<br />

around the world.<br />

The LauraFergusson Brain Injury<br />

Trust’s marketing and community<br />

manager,Jasmine Harris,says they are<br />

still seekingelephant sponsors for the<br />

trail which is free to the publicand<br />

runs from November25until February<br />

18, nextyear.<br />

Once the elephants have been<br />

showcased on the trail there willbe an<br />

opportunity to buy thematanauction<br />

on March 7next year.<br />

Jasminesays people from aroundthe<br />

world can bid on the elephants,but<br />

bidders are mostlikely to be ``mainly<br />

local’’ because transportation can be<br />

challenging.<br />

The trailwill raise funds for the<br />

Trust to help <strong>Canterbury</strong> people with<br />

traumatic brain, spinal and other<br />

complex injures –through assessment,<br />

rehabilitation and support.<br />

Fellowships wereawarded.<br />

The convenerofthe club’s anniversary<br />

planning committee, John Lovell, who is<br />

also apast president of the club,said the<br />

fellowships arethe highest Lions honour<br />

awarded and acknowledge the founder of<br />

Lions International Melvin Jones.<br />

Recipients were: Past President Maureen<br />

Hampton, whohas served25years in<br />

Lionsincluding President of Kaiapoi<br />

Lions, president of an Australian Lions<br />

club and President of the RangioraLions<br />

last year. She is alsoavolunteer mini­bus<br />

driver for the RSA and assists many<br />

people with transport and care.<br />

KarenMcWha, aLion for 20 years in<br />

both Blenheim and Rangiora,was<br />

recognised for her work in sewing and<br />

providing pillowcases and other items for<br />

theneo­natal unit and children’s intensive<br />

care units at Christchurch Hospitalalong<br />

with her continuing support to the club’s<br />

projects and activities.<br />

Jack McLaughlan,aLionfor 25 years,<br />

washonoured for his commitment to the<br />

club and support for manyprojects.<br />

ALife Member presentation was also<br />

made recognising 60 years of community<br />

service by Lion Roger Alexander who<br />

joined the club in 1977. Beforethat he was<br />

amember of Jaycees for 14 years.<br />
